If free trials start going the way of the "open" betas, yah.... good luck with that.

Yes, I'm going to pay a dollar to get a seven day trial to a sub par game that's been widely panned by players and critics alike, when I could get a trial to very literally any triple-A game on the market (well, mostly, anyway) for free, and probably for longer.

What is wrong with these people? I just do not understand it. It's as if they WANT people to look at the game and shake their heads in disgust.

All those "AAA" MMOs? You mean the ones with the fancy graphics and horrible gameplay, excessive instancing, and linear gameplay that cost 80 Million dollars to make and end up as a ghost town after 60 days? Good luck with that, it's been working out really good so far.

Even if you try this game and hate it, you would be hard-pressed to find a weeks worth of entertainment anywhere for this cheap. This game has improved by leaps and bounds since its release, and if 1$ is too much for you to risk, you should consider another hobby.

Any triple-A game? Such as?

The only game I can think of that would be clearly superior would be WoW and 99.99% of us got burned out on it already years ago.

So you're suggesting we should rush out to trial Aion, WAR, or some other piece of crap just because we can't afford $1. Are you joking?

THIS JUST IN: The servers are lagged to all hell and back. I'm guessing that's because both servers are reaching their cap. EU-1 must've filled up especially quickly since it was a ghost town before it started. And what was the cap again? Oh yeah, 10,000 concurrent players.

@Paragus:

I never stated that those AAA titles would necessarily be better than Darkfall - though admittedly it was heavily implied by the statement of Darkfall's near-universal critical panning - but only that I would be able to get a 10 or in some cases even 14 day trial from any one of them for free.

The one point that I'm seeing that may make me change my stance, though, I'm not sure I'm buying into. Is $1 really going to deter some teenage kid from playing it to grief? I mean, sure, maybe it will keep them from doing it endlessly, over and over and over again, but when it comes down to it, I'm pretty sure when griefers want to grief, and their option is to either spend $1 on a 7-day trial, or spend money on the full game, $1 is hardly a good deterrent in my opinion.

It just seems like another attempt to wring every possible cent out of people. Sure, $1 is a trivial amount - trivial enough that it won't deter griefers, and trivial enough that anyone with a sincere interest in the game won't mind paying it - but for someone like me and for many friends I've spoken to who only have a passing, fleeting, "Oh I wonder," interest in the game, $1 is enough to deter us - customers who, if it were free, would download it just for shits and giggles and maybe end up as paying subscribers.

The $1 charge, I feel, is going to hurt them more than help them, as the people they're trying to attract - the above-stated slightly-interested who are not yet sold on the game - will be put off by the fact that they're even charging for a trial in the first place.

Seven days, huh? I thought you needed a whole month to understand the full glory that is DarkFall. That's what the shitstorm on their forums said after it got a 2/10 from Eurogamer.

Okay, 1 dollar. You've already lost me. I don't want to give out my creditcard to every mmo out there. As soon as you included ANY monetary transaction, you're already cutting out many potential trial players. Make it free or don't bother.

what a lame concept.

So basically they want you to *PAY THEM* to convince you to pay them some more?!?!?! Who came up with this idea? Is the game so bad they don't have enough confidence in it's ability hook players so they figure they'll charge for the trial and get a little trickle from somewhere?

I am sure the $1 is there for a reasion. Rather it covers the games huge download or if its there to prevent people from using the trial system as a way to make alts to flood the system and give them an advantage or if its simply they to curb people from making alts to find hacks and such to deal with the game.

Darkfall is anything but a crap game. The gameplay is as deep as Eve Onlines game play when it comes to community interaction and the meta game of seigeing and the spy network.

The game may not be my cup of tea but I can see why they wouldn't want to offer up just a complete free trial that people abuse all too often. The amount of abuse people would put on the system and Darkfall's open ended gameplay with FFA pvp doesn't fit well with a free trial system.

I mean what would keep someone from making a alt or even a group of people just to login at the starting cities and killing all the other new players just trying to start out. Since the account would be free in that case there no repercusions ageanst them people and nothing to keep them from just making a new free account to do the same over and over.

Being able to flood the system with a mini army of free alt character rather its pvping, ganking new player, or farming the starter mobs isn't something the game or the players wants to deal with.

Atleast with the $1 tag on it, it goes to support the games development, keeps people from abusing the system and if someone does use the system to create a character to purely hack within the game there CC can be banned from the system.

I don't see a problem with supporting a game you are willing to give a try with a trial. If your too cheap or do not wish to offer up a $1 to try the game then I am sure you had little to no intention of staying with the game from the start.

They are charging a dollar because it’s not like wow, aoc or eq2 where you little to no impact on anyone else’s play experience. In a game like wow or EQ2 the worst you might have are trial player’s spamming the chat channels and that’s it.

In Darkfall there’s full loot and open pvp so the company has to be accountable to its paying customers. If the trials were free it would open the flood gates to hackers and exploiters. Unlike a game like Aion or WOW, a trail system in DF has tremendous potential for abuse. By charging a dollar they weed out the gold farmers and if anyone make a trial account just to hack and exploit they can ban that persons CC card.

So while it’s not a perfect solution it’s probably the best one due to the type of game DF is. I would however like to see the trial extended by an additional week as one just isn’t enough time to really get a feel for the game IMO.

Free trials are a notorious vehicle for gold farmers and spammer to see there wares, I assume this is one way to curb or stop that. Most other free trials won’t let you chat, sell, trade or cap you in some ways, there’s cost you $1

This is a good move and a very smart way to implement a trial in a ffa, full loot setting.

Looking forward to see the new blood.

Darkfall is a fantastic MMO, and I agree for many it's particularly hard to spend £40 on a game they are unsure of playing, but this is what many people in the community have asked for and they have delivered.

Some people can make their mind up in a week where as some will give it a month and actually like the game, I find it pathetic many people are actually saying this is a bad idea when so many people have requested it.

imo it's a bit like Eve, you won't take a week to get into it and many will steer clear after a few days but their are alot of players who will give it a good go for a month or two and find after they've overcome some obstacles niche games like DF and Eve are brilliant in their own right.
