Not every game has one, but several do -- the opportunity to invite a friend who hasn't played the game before, or try and entire someone back to the game again after a prolonged absence. After all, we have friends we know outside of our games that still enjoy flying around and smashing orcs (or alien horrors, or gang members, or anyone unlucky enough to wander into your space), and it's fun to bring people you interact with anyway into your favorite virtual world. You've got automatic leveling partners and people who know how you like to work, what could go wrong?
Well, they could not like it. Actually, they could get annoyed at you bugging them about the game and decide not to play based solely upon that. Or they could wind up going in a completely different field of the game than you enjoy, or they might bring a whole bunch of real-world drama into a world you had been using to avoid that drama. So there might be good reasons to let your friends just keep enjoying whatever they like and keep your MMO friends separate. What do you do? Do you invite your old buddies, or do you stick with the fresh start?

Awhile back I got a group of about 8 people from my workplace involved in some World of Warcraft. Most of them were new to the MMO scene and I wanted to introduce them to it with a very accessible game. A few still play, but some left after getting into their early 70's. Right now I'm asking that same group about Lord of the Rings Online.
So I do invite friends, but I seldom get to actually use the refer-a-friend deals most games offer.

Just my online friends. A lot of us play L4D, TF2, that sort of thing and I've been pushing APB on a lot of people. So Chris, if you're reading this, Beta plz? :)

I never bring irl friends to MMO's. If they were interested in them, then they'd be playing them already, as a couple of my irl friends already do. The majority of my friends don't own any consoles and do all their computing needs through laptops... MACS even!
I occasionally go with other people that I've met in an MMO to try out something else, but I'm usually not the one asking, I'm usually the guy that goes and doesn't really feel like playing it and then just stops. Like Dota and LoL... sorry, no thanks. I actually think SC2 looks kinda good except for the fact you can't zoom out. I'd buy it if you could zoom in and out with the mouse wheel. Further out than the already max I mean.
I don't have a lot of online friends that I keep in touch with that I've met over video games, it just seems kind of pointless to me. It's very hard to find anyone to connect with I guess, I mean if I wanted to talk to someone I'd go over to a friends house, I wouldn't be playing a video game.

Most of my RL friends play City of Heroes, but we only play together on occasion. Luckily that game is so pick-up-and-go, it's not a big deal if we group or not.

I don't invite RL freinds to MMO with me, I tried this in the past and found much to my horror that my freind was unwilling to run Vent or TS on his computer and as a result teaming with him was a pain in the butt. I'll sent trial keys to online freinds but not RL ones. I like to keep the two groups quite seperate, it's just easier. Besides i play primarily with mu husband and finding anyone who fits in with our play style can be hard.

While it would be fun if my significant other played my MMO's with me, I'm at the same time pleased she doesn't.
