This is the first I've heard of this feature. It sounds promising. I hope they can give planets a semi-realistic feel. And by that I mean, size. I hope the planets are huge. No Super Mario Galaxy/Ratchet and Clank sized planets please. And I want to be able to enter through the atmosphere seamlessly from space.

i think the whole dust idea is cool and all but ccp shouldent make it so you have to use it. it should be an option but not the norm i dont want to see eve compleatly change because some Xbox game has invaded New Eden we have been doing fine for years without it.

i think the planet mining is a way for CCP to flood the market with recorces to make ships in eve cheaper over time. and i see that as a good thing because even some of the best players it might take as long as two days to get a really nice ship to pvp with and then it could be blown up that same night and then you spend another 2 days pharming .. you wind up spending much more time being by yourself running missions then interacting with other players engaging in pvp

Though it looks like you're convinced CCP will copy and paste moon mining mechanics onto planetary interaction, I'm not. The dev blog makes mention of factories and industry being available in planet development-which would consume minerals. So planets have the capability to consume minerals and resources, whereas moon mining does not (save for mainly fuel, which is effected by ice mining, not moon or belt mining/missioning).

Maybe someone develops only industry on a planet, and that planet becomes a consumer of resources more than a supplier. Maybe CCP will make players have to decide between maximizing resource gain or manufacturing-it's impossible to be sure. But the point I'm trying to emphasize is that planets will not simply be more moons to mine.

I truly hope that they make planetary mining different from moon mining in very signifigant ways. I think they idea of some planets being manufacturing and industrial centers while others would be mining centers is a great idea. I also love the idea of all the planetary minerals feeding into the DUST system, rather than the EVE manufacturing pipeline. We will just have to wait for more details. I am afraid that you all may be more inventive than the Devs though. I hope to god they prove me wrong.

Questions:

1. Can we colonize content in worm hole space? If not, is worm hole content going to relate with these features in any other way?

2. Is this designed to be solo-centric gameplay? Or will getting the most out of it involve working with others on a single planet?

3. What market effects will this content be designed to impact? A totally new set of supply-consumption loops or existing ones?

4. How will you interface with your districts? Through menus and interfaces, or orbiting inside the atmosphere/being in the system?

5. What skill sets will be needed to maximize this content? New or existing, and if new what disciplines pre-require from it?

From what I understand there will be no atmospheric flight. The expansions will be a Civilization type use. I have to think that Eve Online at some points needs to go where no released MMORPG has gone before and allow Atmospheric flight with no loading screens. It can be done with procedural programming. They already do it with procedural generated textures for planets. There has to be an interaction on the ship level with planets that brings the ship and the avatar to the atmosphere and the surface (Post Incarna) within Eve Online. Planets could be divided into two categories. Atmospheric flight and non atmospheric flights. Lava planets, ice planets, gas planets, and moons could be allowed to have atmospheric flight while contested planets in Dust 514 would restrict atmospheric flights due to war aka Concord. I am also starting to think Dust 514 may “possibly” alienate current Eve Online PC players by releasing only on a console despite the contracts that can be made between the console and the PC player. I am not knocking the idea. I am saying they need continuity that will flow. I hope walking on stations will help bridge that gap with social areas that are mutual for Dust 514 and Eve Online.

You make great points, but I know they are going to be releasing DUST on PC too. It just wont be released at the same time.

The problem with console only is that pushing updates and stuff through microsofts pipeline on the 360 is entirely too slow, and in order for DUST to be fully realized, it needs an open environment than CCP can control (xmsoft is extremely difficult to deal with, and updates are hampered by an intense schedule, and restrict just how much you can actually change and interface with). The idea here is to sell in as much as possible on the consoles first, then release on PC after.

I tend to think that their fan base in the PC world would take to Dust 514 faster and more openly than the console market. In fact I will bet a dollar in monopoly money that the pole CCP did for Dust 514 with Eve members showed the community preferred the PC by a long shot. I would love to see the results.

The updates for the Xbox 360 sound like a huge pain in the rear. How is the PS3 on updates then? I happen to own one for my kids. This is funny because I have to use my keyboard and mouse with it. I just prefer it. And the PS3 is kind of amazing how I can take a regular notepad hard drive, install it, and load the PS3 OS on it. Then I can backup data onto a thumb drive. I really like Sony’s direction with the PS3 over the Xbox 360. I used to have a 360 but I sold it to get a PS3.

Over all I really want CCP to do well so they can make a profit to pump more content into Eve. It is going to be an interesting 3 years for Eve. ;) And I can't wait for Dust 514 on a PC.
