that virtual 3d store patent thing seems a bit messed up, how can they patent somthing so obvious that has already been done so many times?

Actually a surprising number of non-industrial patents (that is patents that do not involve new kinds of devices or machinery) are for things that are already being done or that wind up including things that are already being done.

Sounds sort of typical of Apple if you ask me. People still think Apple invented multi-touch.

isn't it a requirement for new patents that the stuff being patented wasn't public knowledge already?

Technically, yes, but there are institutionalized ways around that -- all of which were originally put into place with the best of intentions. Mostly, if you're determined to file a software patent, you can do so regardless of prior art, and even if there's a patent already extant that covers the same thing.

You can even file a rather vague patent that can be updated after-the-fact to cover something quite specific.

what would be an innocent use of being allowed to patent stuff that other people have already patented?

Collars, Prim Penises, Sexgen, body oil, animations, St Andrew's Crosses, Dalmations, Horses, Ropes, Racks, Spanking chairs, cuffs, kennels, Gor...

Yes, you keep telling yourself that sex isn't a big thing in SL.

Aha no, Jay. I'm saying that there's less sex per capita in SL than there is offline -- and that you're likely deluding yourself if you believe otherwise. Again, this is something we've discussed here at length previously. Have you noted a specific flaw in that material?

Don't forget, Jay, that Gor (as well as your other litany of interesting search-terms) preceded SL online. The Gorean "community" moved from BBS systems, Usenet groups, and MUDs to The Sims Online and then, most recently, to SL. They have their own OpenSim grid, too.

This type of content is always going to be there. I dislike the Gorean philosophy intensely (and the awful books even less), but I'll say this for Goreans: they self-segregate nicely and don't mingle with the rest of us in SL. Outside of their continents, the few I've met are respectful and good "citizens."

For all the hooplah about Gorean "fishermen" at SL's Welcome Areas (Meadows' I, Avatar notes one) I've never run into them "soliciting" during my time as a Linden Lab mentor or with four classes that used SL.

I feel my comment stands despite some people obviously being offended that their game has a lot of fapping going on with it. Despite some people saying that these are my search terms, no, they are despite what Mark says a huge part of SL for many people.

I guess for those in denial and trying to pretend that SL is a Bapist paradise take a flight over any mainland sim and camera into any skybox randomly.

Just to clarify, are you saying that sex isn't/wasn't a major part of SL for you and that you're not like everyone else? Or that it was and you are?

I mostly played a kid avatar Tateru. But even a kid avatar can see things around him.

Why do I get the feeling you are defending Mark's statement so much? He is seriously trying to tone down the reputation SL has for sex. A reputation that is deserved in my opinion.

Everything we've seen is that (compared to offline) the whole sex in SL thing is hyped way out of proportion, quite independent of any statements that Kingdon's made. I mean you seem to be asserting that the majority of users are having more sex in SL than people might have offline, and that seems quite silly.

No, reread my original statement.

"Yes, you keep telling yourself that sex isn't a big thing in SL."

I would be pretty safe in saying that millions and millions of real world dollars have been made from it. It is as a large a part of the SL economy as selling wool is for New Zealand.

Why are you in such denial that it is a huge part of SL Tateru?

Reread mine. I never said that it wasn't. I just said that it was less big than offline :)

Actually, I *do* agree with him. It's just not a key driver for the majority of SL usage.

It is a key driver, probably very much more so than corporate or education use.

After all, there isn't a continent for education is there?

Why? Is there a need to put education somewhere where people won't stumble across it accidentally?
