Nicely written. As a long-time roleplayer, I agree -- most of us are not elitist buttholes. There is a butthole element, of course, just as there's a butthole element in any subset of the MMORPG player population. But on the whole we're not that much different than a non-roleplayer... we just like the added dimension and the creative outlet that roleplaying affords us.

I become a butthole when you try to ruin the RP experience though. I mean when we're are sitting in a tavern talking and you come up going, "lolwut" and proceed to take your clothes off and dance naked on our table, it gets a little annoying :P

I have to disagree with the tenor of the article, as evidenced by the sentiment in the second comment.

I've encountered roleplayers across the MMO landscape, within a variety of rule-sets, and the only constant is that RPers tend to be the most vocally entitled and least flexible of any player type when it comes to the collaborative process of community building that ultimately decides how a game "should be played".

Instead of compromise, they eventually alienate other players and either withdraw into an even more insular world, whose storylines rarely react to actual server events, or set off for the next great RP-MMO.

I've seen the pattern repeat too many times. from both sides of the coin.

It has been maybe YEARS since I saw anyone on a roleplay server of any game actually try and influence any kind of rules on game chat.

When I played my first MMO I assumed everyone role-played. I started a Bard and figured I had better have some songs macro'd!

I wrote a collection of ridiculously silly poems and played my Lute while I macro'd the words out.

I was so surprised when folks started handing me Gold pieces! It seemed I was an unfortunately rare sight.

I don't roleplay on a regular basis but when I happen upon some folks sitting around a fire exchanging in-character comments I am quick to jump in.

The only game I've seen truly dedicated to roleplayers is Neverwinter Nights.

SWG has done some great things to support the roleplay community as well but it can never compare to the ability for a player to create their own server.

Roleplaying is a huge untapped market in MMOs - the game that figures out how to harness that energy and support it will be a game that succeeds (and makes crazy money - while your typical pvp leet person will QQ and fill up forums with nerdrage at the thought of paying for gear in a game store - the roleplayer will spend unlimited amount of money to create their own world.

If by "huge" you mean practically non-existent... Role Players are such a small part of the genre I literally haven't encountered a single one, over many years of MMO', that actually does things in game. Role playing outside of the game using characters originally drafted from within the game is all I've ever seen.

Not to mention, by convention of how things work, you can only have so many RP'ers participating in the same RP. That in itself leads to further fragmentation within the community IMO. Like the article hinted at, player housing and cosmetic clothes weren't included for the "real" RP'ers, because a ton of people enjoy dressing their avatar up, or their avatar's home up, to look kick ass as a mini game. I'd go so far to say that even scenic locations weren't included for RP'ers, but in order to give the game, as the article brings up, the necessary "flavor".

Also a long-time roleplayer here, also disagreeing with many claims in the article. I understand the desire to counter those annoying stereotypes, but some of these statements, while I'd like them to be true, run counter to my reality.

In *my* experience, roleplaying communities seem to attract the biggest drama queens, inflexible divas who just love to start something. Their goal is consensus? Avoiding conflict? I laughed out loud! UO, EQ, DAOC, SWG, CoH, WoW, EQ2, LOTRO. Every one of them has a seedy underbelly of cyberz. Every one of them has more than its fair share of crappy, immature roleplay, of elitist roleplayers, of roleplay nazis, of emo half-half-half races, who are quite vocal -- and yes, pissy -- about everyone else's playstyles. And yep I've played with some extremely hardcore RPers who are at the top of their PvE and PvP game too -- but they are the exception, not the rule. That's not "one nimrod" spoiling the group, that's twelve years of the same thing over and over, as my roleplaying guild and friends are routinely disappointed by the shockingly obnoxious roleplaying communities around us.

Instead of pretending these elements don't exist, I'd rather emphasize that they *can* and *should* be ignored, in exactly the same way as we'd ignore Spleenmaster and Loljoker who are chatting it up about football scores in spatial chat. The bad element of RPers is pervasive and is just as disruptive to roleplaying immersion as any other batch of jerks. Roleplaying servers might offer a nicer experience for a non-roleplayer but for RPers themselves, we've got to be more careful. There are good people and great RPers out there, but you have to look for them pretty closely. They aren't the majority as claimed.

I'm a dedicated FFXI fan, despite everything SE's done to piss us off.

But I can't stand roleplayers. CANNOT stand them.

Maybe I've never met a good one? But all I've seen are either crazy people horrible at the game, or stuck-up idiots whenever I accidentally say something to them that might be "OOC".

Its funny how you are addressing stereotypes or generalizations of roleplayers then say something like "World of Warcraft players will often say they don't like roleplaying but started on an RP server because the names are better -- which is a roleplaying concern."

I think next time you should say "some" or "in my experience, World of Warcraft players...." Seeing how your article addresses some of these things i think you're def being hypocritical.

Would have been a nice article..... =/

I'd say one big way to help roleplaying is the game's atmosphere. In both SWG and LotRO, I see A LOT of casual roleplaying among players of all types, because the games' universe, setting, atmosphere, something about it just makes people want to immerse themselves in the game and be a part of the world. SWG even started adding the PvP and PvE stuff that WoW has, but it hasn't hampered the RP in the slightest. I can't name any one thing about either game that sets it apart like that, but I would like to see other games copy it.

And I like this edition of The Mog Log, most of it applies to Roleplaying in other MMOs too.

Actually I think the article describes Role Players accurately based on my experience in FFXI.
