There are a few semi stupid "security" things that get me screwed up. Some places I've been simply don't let you change your email address. Others need you to confirm that it's changing at your old address (which you can't do if it already shut down).

I think how if someone gets ahold of any of my ex-emails, they could probably get some of my accounts too. A few times I just never changed my emails on places, because there were just so many to change. That's why it's actually better to use a free online email service rather than use your normal provider email, because either your provider itself is bound to change sooner or later or they merge/get bought out and names change.

I also have people that click constantly on places for a "password reset" on my accounts. I get real email about people requesting password resets on my login names quite often (and these are real reset requests, not the fake ones we all also get pretending there's something wrong from password fisher sites). I of course never click through to allow it to reset, so all stays fine, but it just shows how often people are messing around trying to log in my stuff.

My online characters feel like part of my family. I don't need people messing with them.

Despite all that, and being online since I was 9 years old, making accounts on and trying out literally over 150 online games, I've never once lost one to hacking. Most hacking isn't really hacking anyway, it's someone who has been tricked one way or another to either give up their password or run key loggers or something else.

I've had accounts shut down by different systems before "by mistake" it was claimed or system error or some other things and they've always been restored to me, but it sure is scary to see a password I know well suddenly not work. It's like having a car towed and instantly thinking it was stolen I guess. It's not a great feeling. I can imagine people feel violated and hurt to lose their accounts.

That reminds me, I really need to update some accounts places that are linked to dead emails.

The phrase "hacked account" is generally a misnomer. There are no groups of cyber-geeks out there attacking the Gibson.

Compromised account is much more appropriate.

I've never been locked out of any of my accounts, and that is likely because they have never been made targets. What I mean is that players, perhaps unknowingly, participate in and/or involve their accounts in activities that make them a target. Activities such as registering on an illegitimate website to buy gold, power-leveling, or sell/trade accounts.

These types of services, and the people who run them, are *fully* aware of their own illegitimacy, and while some of them may operate without malicious intent, we can imagine that anyone willing to run an illegitimate business is probably not opposed to using the information you provide them to target your account.

Now, before you start claiming that your account was "hacked" and you didn't participate in any such behavior, please consider the various forums you've registered to (game-related or otherwise), how your e-mail address has been used online, your myspace or facebook accounts, or any files you've downloaded. A combination of any of these can be used to target your account.

Ultimately, your account information is only as safe as you keep it.

I had a recent experience like this!

But it wasn't a hacker!

Out of curiosity I started a Runes of Magic account and leveled my toon up to about 16 and got distracted by something shiny and didn't log in for a few months.

One day I got a "state of the game" newsletter form them and decided to play again but my password wouldn't work.

I sent them an email asking for help and got an answer back that my account didn't exist.

I mailed back my confirmation email and some headers from the assorted emails I receive on the same account.

Again, they replied that my account never existed.

Glad I never spent any money in the cash shop!
