Lately we've begun to see the shooter genre creep into the massively multiplayer online game space. Titles like Global Agenda and All Points Bulletin are both equal parts shooter and MMO. Assuming the trend continues, we'll probably see more shooter MMOs in the coming years -- potentially even other genres, too.
Obviously, this makes most of us wonder what other genres could hit the MMO scene. But, what we really want to know is which combinations you think are lost causes. Will there ever be a successful MMORTS? If not, why? Would anyone even want to play an MMO version of a fighting or racing game? The mind reels at the possibilities.

There actually was a western market big name 1 a few years ago, can't remember the name. It didn't last long thought it was in some was pretty ambitious (they used all kinds of real world car data/parts information that you could use to upgrade your car).

There will never a horror mmog. Because, the real horror is when you are alone and in the dark. Stay in the dark with a lot of people isn't horror, is something else... :P
Figthing MMO? Huum... hard to think in something... :S
Racing MMO already exist (Tales Runner, Upshift Strike Racer and another ones);

The Secret World is supposed to be a horror MMO

I dunno... DDO's pretty horror mmo for me. Being sent down in a dark maze full of giant hyper-realistic spiders every 5 minutes is enough to make me want to stab myself (or quit... whichever).

Fighting games as a one-on-one setup might not work well in a MMO setting, but what about reviving the old beat-em-up genre?

Hmm, a fighting MMO would still go towards the RPG genre I think, else it'll just be a multiplayer fighting game, unless you ofcourse make a huge world where you can can fight in without RPG elements but that would be boring.

Hmm the Kingdom Under Fire looks cool, and a Dragonball MMO is also something I wanted to see for a while now.
Though what I really like to see is a persistent MMORTS with everyone having a town on the same map, it's always there so you can be attacked when not there, etc.

Shattered Galaxy was actually one of the most fun MMOs I have ever played. If it had had the marketing of one of the majors behind it, I think it really could have developed into something special.

Yeah, I played Shattered Galaxy for about four years. Until Kru took over, anyway. Definitely what I would consider an MMORTS.

You laugh, but that could actually work very well. In the WiiFit MMO you would pay a monthly fee to have someone else design your workout for you. Sign up for classes, compare with other people in the class. Global, regional, and local leaderboards for all the mini-games.
