In the lore of EVE Online, the first pilots came to New Eden through a wormhole that collapsed, leaving them stranded on the other side. Their descendants now battle it out for whatever space they can call home, knowing Earth is well beyond their reaches. What many may not know is that while that wormhole is no longer open, there is still an anomaly where it once was. Thankfully, pilot Hallax decided to capture an image of that lore-laden spot and send it in to us. He writes:
This is the collapsed wormhole that, in happier times, led back to Earth's solar system. This is one of the truly unique sights to see in the EVE universe. I took my covert ops frigate on a field trip one evening; to depart from my normal activities and see it for myself. I had to dodge several pirate attacks on the way, but it was worth it to capture this: no fleet battles, no industrial mining operations, just a broken stargate all alone.
We love to hear about lore. If you've found a meaningful lore spot in your favorite MMO, we'd love to see screenshots of it. Just email those in to us at oneshots AT massively DOT com along with your name, the game it's from, and a quick note about what we're seeing. We'll post it here and give you the credit for sending it in!

It's the place all capsuleers should visit at least once in their games. It's also one of the hardest places to get to; way too many good locations for gatecamps...

I'm pretty sure I took a trip there when I was playing, it didn't seem too hard to get to.
I guess it must have been updated with the new graphics because the shots I have of my visit look different (made it in a frigate I believe).

The first trip I took out there I found six frozen corpses drifting quietly in the void of the empty system. There was something beautifully macabre about it.

I've NEARLY made it there a few years ago. Sadly, I got podded about two to three jumps away. LOL
I will make another attempt soon in the future! I guaranee it.

I made it there once in a shuttle as a noob. It's a shame that the EVE screenshot capture function censors out the actual EVE gate for some reason, all you can see is the collapsed wormhole.

Actually, the destination at the other end of the EVE Gate is never specifically referred to except that it was found in some obscure part of the Milky Way. It's not likely it was found in our solar system, because by the seventy-eighth century it is said rather vaguely that our galaxy had been colonized or claimed by mankind to an unknown extent and finally, after turning against each other over scarcity of land, resources, or both, the first naturally occurring wormhole was discovered that led to the EVE system in some unknown star cluster. However, at some point after the eightieth century the gate "collapsed", leaving the EVE cluster cut off from the rest of humankind, and it wouldn't be a stretch to compare the gate to having been the umbilical cord that allowed to growing population in EVE to have access to the infrastructure of the various factions in the Milky Way. Most of the EVE galaxy left in ruins, after thousands of years, four cultures on four different worlds (among others, such as Jove and the Sleepers) finally managed to redo thousands of years of human technological advancement and then we got the Gallente Federation, the Caldari State (formerly part of the Gallente Federation), the Amarr Empire and the Minmatar Republic (formerly part of the Amarr Empire).
It is possible that the gate actually remains open, but intense bursts of energy continue to rhythmically pour out from what can only be assumed is the other side, making it for the majority of the time dangerous to venture near and permanently inaccessible. In the 234th century there was a stellar event visible from every system in the EVE galaxy coming from the galactic north, that was commonly thought of as the light from whatever destroyed the EVE Gate and continues to render the wormhole impassable finally reaching the EVE galaxy, but eventually disappeared, left unexplained.
