A year ago, we mentioned that Sony Online Entertainment had opened up their EverQuest II database to researchers, allowing scientists from noted universities the ability to study the demographics of their server in an anonymous fashion. Slowly but surely, more studies are coming out that are using this information, and one of the newer studies takes an in-depth look at roleplayers.
While the study is over 40 pages long and packed with information, Raph Koster has broken down the big findings on his website -- namely the fact that hardcore RPers only make up 5% of the player population and don't care about playing on an RP server. RPers also commonly belong to minority groups of some sort, play less hours per week than the average player, and have a higher rate of turning in-game social connections into real-world connections.

My personal experience has shown that RPers do infact like to play on RP servers. You can easily bend "rpers don't need to play on RP servers" but when you look at the RP server in EQ2 you will see it's... large. While that doesn't indicate that RPers are there it does mean that since RPers tend to go where people are, too... you know RP, that's probably a good place for them to go specially since it's the "RP" server.
Of course RPers are in a minority, was there any doubt?
Didn't Raph's company just close the doors on it's latest "project". Why do people listen to this guy still?

Or, conversely, because the RP server is so crowded, they seek other servers where they will be less likely to be harassed. Again, personal experience, RP-labeled servers have a higher proportion of people who like to grief RP events. Of course, our experiences are BOTH anecdotal evidence, and in no way refers to the numbers given by SOE.

Not "in a minority." They tend to be in "minority groups." Minority groups include women, Hispanics, Jews, Muslims, that kind of thing. People who, say, might have a harder time forging social connections because there aren't as many of them around, or because there aren't as many of them interested in the same things.

His project closed before it could be opened because he ran out of funding. If you can't afford to keep a server up, you can't host an MMO of any sort. It's similar to having to move because you can no longer afford to rent a house. Not having the funding to keep developing a project doesn't automatically make everything you say irrelevant or stupid.

Uh, warped conclusions? All I did was paraphrase the conclusions the authors of the paper came to. And I wasn't involved in the research. My career and work have exactly zero to do with this study other than the fact that I blogged about it.

IMHO, Raph was maybe instrumental in helping creating the MMO genre but since those early days, his ideas really didn't pan out that well as MMOs began to appeal to a larger market.
He was too focused on grind / unimaginitive timesinks in his MMOs. Early UO and SWG where dull, convoluted, punishing exercises in grind endurance, nothing more.
That's why he has nothing all that new to contribute to the genre these days. No one is interested in games better suited to marcos and bots then thinking humans.

Well, yeah. EQ2 is a themepark grindhouse. Exactly why would "hardcore RP'rs" take to it? No reason that I could see in my years of play. Logging into EQ2 was like going to friggin' work for me. And I only stayed as long as I did because my best friend (who I started playing EQ1 with on launch day) went for EQ2 and loves winning at themepark grindhouses. He LIKES the work *gak*.
