The most important thing for me to have in a guild is an active chat. Not truly spamming, but being able to talk in guild and alliance chat about any topic, whether it has something to do with Guild Wars or not, and someone also responding to you. Even if I don't always participate in the chat, it's nice to see an active chat, as it really helps giving you the feeling you're part of an active guild/alliance.

That, and the ability to get together a The Deep group with alliance members. Nowadays it's impossible to get a PUG in The Deep, and I absolutely dig that elite mission...

I can agree on the first bit, but since I do not play that regularly, I usually get kicked out of active guilds within a few weeks. This led me to make a guild especially for people with the same problem. Granted, there's no chat at all, but you get acces to Scrimmages, Alliance Battles and a snassy cape.
