One at a time:

1) Oh, I'm not AFRAID of Square-Enix and FFXIV. I've already made the decision that I simply WILL NOT play FFXIV because I have no real faith in that Square-Enix can successfully run a fair-play MMO. I am just not certain, at this point, whether it's simply either:

They can't run a fair-play MMO.

or

They refuse to, as an act of fraud for those of us who try to play the game fairly. (My guess is this one...)

I cannot recommend FFXI to much of anyone at this point, simply because, to play the game, most players believe you need multiple illegal third-party applications, and all Square-Enix does about it is talk, because, if they actually did something about it, you can kiss goodbye three-quarters (at bare minimum!) of the US player-base!

2) A lot of this compartmentalization also comes from the fact that a lot of these players are literally "40K/hr or F off!" They will compute their every move (using illegal computer add-ons, no less) to maximize their effort far beyond anything they would otherwise be entitled.

And, of course, you gotta have the LEET GEAR!!!

3) Mog Bonanza: Two things:

a) "You pays your money, you takes your chances!"

b) How about, if you know you're going 10/character, getting one ball with each last number, like I do for my one character?

4) Still see the occasional Astley idiocy, but it's getting safer... :)

I played FFXI for over 3 and half years and while I still have a lot of fond memories (mostly due to the community and an awesome linkshell). I am very wary of FFXIV.

I will admit Blizzard has spoiled me with customer support and developer communication, even though it was something they had to grow into themselves. I'm just not willing to deal with that mysterious company unable to acknowledge it's customers outside of Japan anymore. They need to show a willingness to deal with their global fan base far above and beyond what they got (and still getting) away with in FFXI.

Also I am disappointed with the revealed races. I understand the concept of what they wanted to accomplish but I believe it pigeon-holed them into a rinse and repeat of FFXI's races right down to the same two being single gendered, without any attempt to introduce something new and unique for FFXIV.

I tried FFXI and enjoyed it for a couple of weeks to maybe a month before it became tedious. It felt like grinding and I refuse to use third-party programs that play the game for me. I've heard the game has improved since then and maybe it has. [ I should be clear here and tell you I only use the word 'grind' when I feel like there is no alternative to repeating actions (quests, killing the same monsters, traveling back-and-forth) that are fun once, but not more than once.]

As a short aside, I would like to see a game develop an experience system that isn't so based on defeating mobs. Maybe something akin to what EvE has going where you're essentially granted experience based on the amount of time you are subscribed, or in-game, or out-of-city, or...you get the picture. I realize one of the practical results of an experience-based system is that it requires an investiture of time (and it should!), which means we'll continue to pay those subscription fees. And we'll probably be more likely to continue paying those fees the more time we have invested into the game already, which seems to increase in direct proportion to the amount of time it takes to gain another level.

Anyway, I'm digressing horribly here. I'm wary of FFIV. I"m hoping (I suppose I'm hopeful, too) Square Enix learned some things from FFIX in the way of customer service and security/bot-protection. I have a lot more faith in a company that's been there, done that and taken some licks than I have in a company that's inexperienced. Maybe it's simply a matter of prioritization.

If they haven't learned anything? Well, I can't imagine that's the case, but if they haven't...well, there are other games out there that I'll continue to enjoy.

If nothing else, I hope they take a chance and push the genre forward in some way - give everyone else something to learn.

So much to say on this topic that I don't even feel like getting into it.

Square Enix, by today's standards is TERRIBLE at maintaining an MMO.

blahblahblah refuses to have a community site blahblahblah most arrogant company ever blahblahblah never even acknowledged that the game's top LS's REQUIRE members to use hacks and bots yaddayadda yadda.

FF14 is sure to sell a lot of copies and I wonder how all these new customers will feel about SE's attitude towards its customers.
