There's almost always a moment. If you're interested in MMOs beyond just enjoying the game while you play it -- and truth be told, if you're reading Massively you pretty well qualify -- then there was most likely a single experience you had somewhere along the line that convinced you these games were special and interesting. Something beyond just a diversion you could take or leave. There was something the game that made you sit up and say that you were experiencing something unique, something that may or may not be commonplace these days but seemed new and fresh at the time.
Perhaps it was the first time you took part in a major PvP battle. Perhaps it was your first struggle against a difficult monster in PvE, realizing that you actually had other real people at your side fighting the monster. It could have been the first time you crafted something you were proud of, or even just a close friend you made in the game that you wouldn't have met otherwise. Today, we're asking you what moment in an MMO first made the whole idea click for you. And for bonus points, looking back on it now, does it seem like you were excited over something silly, or does it still feel unique?

In one of my first days in Everquest as a low-level dwarf exploring the Butcherblock Mountains I came across a ring of standing stones. Seconds later, a group of monsters including a troll and an ogre -- which I had never seen before -- appear within the ring close to me. They "con" red (=much higher level) so I immediately panic and flee thinking I was going to die and did not want to lose my corpse (again)!
It was not until later that I realized they were actually PCs and I had just witnessed the result of a Druid's group teleport spell.

Everquest, around the year 2001. My level 14 Halfling Druid. About to make the run from Rivervale to Qeynos. Has Invisibility, has SoW. Need some beetle claws. Qeynos has em.
What an adventure. Through Runnyeye (invis, of course). Through the canyons. Across two massive Plains of Karanas zones. Finally, Qeynos (half hour to fourty-five minute run with SoW).
Run to enterance of Qeynos. Accidentally hit 'auto-attack' (used to be 'A' key). Big 'ole Guard one-shots me. Back at Rivervale, gearless. :)
Good Times.
(Changed the 'auto-attack' key to '~' after that)

Guild Wars. And I realised how amazing the game was the instant I began to fight enemies in the first mission in prophecies. (that's about 20 mins into the game, for those who don't stop to check out how awesome pre-searing is.

Mine would have to be just logging into Everquest for the first time. I didn't think my dial up modem could handle the game so I didn't buy it at launch. My friend got convinced to try it and reported to me that he was able to play it ok on his dial up connection so I rushed out to bu it myself. The excitement of just logging into the game knowing I was playing in a world with hundreds of other people was all I needed to know I'd be playing these games for awhile.
