Depends on the game. If pvp is a part of the game then it has to be 3 person. If the game focuses more on pve then first person.

It has to be 3rd person for MMO's. FIrst Person view should be saved for FPS games.

You know I actually avoided playing oblivion for a long time simply because I didn't think I could play a first person fantasy game and enjoy it. Well turns out I was completely wrong. In the end, content is king, and a good game is very hindered by its viewpoint.

That being said, I don't think I could ever play a FP only MMO unless it was top tier. Third person perspective simply has too many benefits (seeing your character I feel actually gives you more immersion by connecting you to that character), and allows for a immersive environmental experience.

....make me eat those words elderscroll MMO. Please.

The ability to scroll out to see more of the feild is very important, and the ability to scroll in to see much of the detail is very important.

Good looking characters with nice round butts and jiggling boobs and panties is a real nice touch when I'm stuck for hours killing deformed creatures and staring at dusty dark wastelands for hours on end. They're even welcome in the prettiest of scenes.

As far a first person view goes, sometimes I use it in tight confined spaces so I don't end up looking through walls or whatever is close by that will block my vision. Sometimes I use it change the feel of the game.

When I played Morrowwind and Oblivion, I used nothing but FP. I think because I didn't care much for the way the characters looked, and it made it seem all the more realistic. That or it was something about the speed.

If I have a choice I usually use all persectives. So, yeah it's pretty important I'm not stuck using only one view.

I only like to play 3rd person view, but that is because I am one of the unlucky people who get motion sickness while playing FPS. I have played oblivion but I could not play it for more then 30 minutes at a time or I would actually get sick. I like the games that have a choice where you can choose both to satisfy everyone.

I have the exact same problem. Most disappointment that I've had recently was buying Fallout 3 GOTY edition then finding out I couldn't play more than 30 minutes without getting physically ill. So for me it has to be in 3rd person or I just can't play the game.

Since MMOs tend to be about your 'unique' character in a world of others and about collecting more gear for said character, not being able to see your character (in FP view) would be a catastrophe.

In a game where all the other characters are NPCs it doesn't matter so much IMO since no one else is there to care what you look like and you don't really need to look fancy to impress anyone.

I prefer to have both first and third person perspective available. I do not like first person only, but can tolerate only third.

Not fussed, I'm happy either way as long as it's done right.

A dedicated FPS is the only place I really want first person.
I greatly prefer third person for adventure games because the first person view in most games is actually quite restrictive... it's like having tunnel-vision and wearing a neck brace. Third person at least gives you back your peripheral vision.

For the longest time I used first person view in Everquest. When I started playing my Enchanter and had to start mesmerizing 5 creatures at a time, I found 3rd person view to be vital. It stuck with me for the remainder of my time in the game because I played a bard and had identical requirements.

As far as new games. I guess it depends on the game. WoW works just fine with 3rd person. While Mortal Online probably wouldn't function in 3rd person.

What do I prefer? Frankly, anything. Whatever I am given. I believe I can enjoy a fun game regardless of camera position. I've said this in the past, but Battlefield Heroes really shows me how fun a 3rd person shooter can be. So my mind is now open to whatever I am given.

1st person in shooters, 3rd person in RPGs.

Of course there are exceptions. For example, in GTA and Mass Effect the third person works quite well (even though Shepard in ME sometimes blocks my sight with his bulky heavy armour), but then again Mass Effect is not only a shooter but also an RPG, and GTA is... I don't know what GTA is. Sandbox game comes the closest, I guess.

Strongly prefer 1st person. The problem with third person is that it keeps reminding me that I am controlling a toon.

I have always liked the 3rd person viewpoint in MMOs, but I'm playing FE right now and you use both. this was pretty frustrating to me at first. I have since gotten used to it (kinda)

I like having the option to flip between them myself.

My only issue with it is melee in 1st person always seems strange to me.

I really liked UO's isometric view. For some reason it made big gatherings and events much easier to follow, with text appearing right over the character and not in a chat log. Chat bubbles never got close to that in WoW & Co.
Shame all the 3D upgrades are still essential 2D engines....if UO would just have looked like, let's say, Titan Quest.

Playing 3rd person in an MMO is less like playing an RPG and more like playing an RTS where you only have a single unit. In 1st person, I am the character. In 3rd, I am controlling the character.

For me, 1st person is superior and lack of it, or lack of proper support and design for it, is a major factor in my not feeling attached to a game. I played EQ for 6 years, and every time I did quit I came back for my character. Every 3rd person game, when I quit, there was no attachment to the character and so less reason to come back.

I guess it's different for every person and their is no clear cut answer as to which view is better. I feel more immersed with Third Person, because I end up caring more about the observed figure in front of me, instead of the right hand I stare at all the time in First Person.

And for example, in Half Life 2, I cared more about what was happening to Alex and Dog rather than Gordon, because you don't see his face, emotions, etc. I connect more by seeing a face, an emotion from someone, just like in real life you know? That's why I feel more immersed by Third Person.

The only way I can feel truly immersed in First Person is if I really AM that character in the game world and the game recognizes that and never shows the third person view, because you ARE that person. Make sense..? Not just some character created from character creator or what the designer made, because I'd rather just have Third person to emotion and connect in those ways.

I loathe the first person view.

* It makes you feel like you're floating through the world, rather than a part of it.
* If they try to add head bob into it, the result is very distracting and can make some people nauseous.
* The computer display lacks peripheral vision. So when you're in first person view you're seeing less of the world than a person standing there would actually see. You're less aware of your surroundings.
* When you look straight down you can't see your feet. Not very realistic, and also making it hard to tell exactly where you're standing. This complicates things like jumping, making it easy to overshoot or undershoot your target.
* I like being able to see my character.

I do like having the option to switch to first person. In certain situations, it's very useful. But having no 3rd person at all will more often than not kill the game for me. It had better be VERY compelling in other ways (like Fallout 3 was) in order to keep me playing.
