I'll take any such announcement from Cryptic with a grain of salt.

Since I've seen more gold-spammers in this game than pretty much any other - at least a dozen new whispers a day, and since when you report spam it blocks the account, that's a lot of spammers.

Ye, 1 Federation character + 1 klingon character = 1 mill / 2 = 500 k maximum accounts, not takeing liftetimer accounts with multiple slots into account. Or the Goldspammers....

To be fair, they were counting *accounts* in STO, so the spammers count but the extra characters don't.

The extra characters count in Champions, where you can have 16 characters on a Lifetime account.

How is this game working out? I was in OB and it was fun but i didn't get very far. Is it worth a go if you are not a Trekkie?

It's fun, for a while, but there's no depth to the game. I'd pass on it for a few months at least.

Let's see what they are in a month eh Craptic? Bet you won't be releasing a press statement about those numbers.

This is what I'm really curious about. Still, if I were to have made a mistake in buying a lifetime from Cryptic, I wish it was this game instead. At least they are counting accounts here not characters per account in my game, Champions. Currently, my nerdrage is incurable.

It's all spin. Clever use of words to make it seem like theres alot more players playing then there is. By simply using the word accounts they can now account every account ever created on the website in the number. I can still log into my open and closed beta accounts so I know they where both counted in that figure.

Notice they sure are not coming out and saying they have 1 million Active Playing Accounts.

Just goes to show you how bad the game is failing when they have to start spinning wording to get news out about the game. What a joke of a company.

"had drawn over 1 million fans to create accounts in the time leading up to its launch." - from the article linked.

Yeah, looks like its forum/beta accounts, NOT paying accounts.

I'm fairly certain it's 1 million accounts at startrekonline.com, not game accounts.

Warhammer Online and Age of Conan hit those milestones as well. Counting first month subscriptions as a measure of success is about as useful as counting toenail clippings as a measure of personal wealth.

Registered user don't say much in terms of actual subscribers.
Age of Conan had 700K subs now they are estimated to have 100K
The Star Trek fan base is huge no doubt, and the recently released
movie made it a come back in terms of popularity.
Cryptic has attracted non MMO players as well and
that has been an advantage.

What would be interested to see is the real sub numbers.

Here are about 483

Gave up reading the comments when it became clear that people were commenting on what it "looks" like! Im not interested in the opinion of people who judge a game without playing it, much like a lot of of people opinions on this sight.

AoC announced that had 1 million accounts
Warhammer announced something similar (900k or something)
Champions

...and the latest snake oil of the month now

STO.

These launch announcements are meaningless.

It just totally boggles me that this many people still do launches...

I'll care when its "One Million Actively Paying Subscriptions". Otherwise, this is a weak ass attempt to be like Blizzard, who actually HAS the numbers to brag about.

So to summarise all the comments:

"one character created -- only a million characters count"
"a million characters created -- only a million accounts count"
"a million accounts created -- only WoW numbers count"

Considering this is five days after launch, Cryptic and STO are going well, and I for one congratulate them and wish them a long, happy run.

Plenty of MMOs would love to have a million accounts... EVE, SWG, etc.
