"The vast majority of SL residents who log in and play the game every day are not very bright and large blocks of text scare the bejesus out of them."

And the smart minority of SLers have the bejeus bored out of them by Prokofy Neva.

Or did LL ban her from the forums?

@ his new sycophant iggyono

Self-appointed visionaries and assorted drama queens in ANY online game or community ever were bothered by what a windbag like Neva posts. It's only a forum, you don't have to read it, defeat it or compel others to hate on it. It's all optional. Unless the forum is closed and shuttered, lol.

From what I recall, the Lindens supported blogging as an alternative to closing the forums in the past. As a seasoned Second Life resident, I am still a bit confused about the forums. In my mind, they were still "closed" and not the preferred method of communication. It seems that M Linden has started using them to "continue the discussion" of his blog posts, followed by other Lindens doing the same. However, they don't always do this. Some blog posts close of comments as well as forum discussions. Many of us would still like to speak about the posts and get everyone elses opinions. The closest thing to doing this is by maintaining our own blogs. I hope that upgrading the blogs to use JIVE/Clearspace will introduce more posts that don't lock the residents of second life from speaking about their opinions and what is on their mind.

Long, long ago, the only way you could really get news form SL was through the forums, or on the staff's own personal blogs. The forums however were also plagued by a lot of hostility and mistreatment.

I can only report from my personal experience: the "new" blog system is too confusing for my feeble mind. That doesn't mean I'm an "active" forum user, either — I used to be one, in 2004-2006, when I had more time :) But at least I managed to find out what I wanted there.

Of course, some people will prefer the "new" blog-forum system instead. It's a question of personal taste...

As for the rest, well, LL is really just inventing an excuse to close down the forums. I guess that they are unwilling to pay additional license renovations for vBulletin, and for some reason, going back to phpBB might not be an option (although I wonder why not :) ). In any case, there are plenty of user-created SL forums for us to participate :) Who cares what's "official" or not? LL was never an eager participant on the SL forums, even when they were "official"...
