There are certainly a lot of intellectual properties out there that would make for an excellent MMO. Running down the list of major games currently running shows no shortage of games based on popular franchises -- Star Trek Online, Warhammer Online, Star Wars Galaxies, Age of Conan, Champions Online -- and the trend shows no sign of slowing. But there are other franchises that could conceivably make a number of people happy -- Transformers, The Dark Tower, Doctor Who, Mass Effect, Babylon 5, and so on ad infinitum.
Of course, there are licenses that are unlikely to ever be adapted for MMOs, either because their heyday of popularity has passed or because they're just not in quite the right market. Still, we can dream, and in our heads we might have an idea for the world's best MMO based off of Macross. What intellectual property would you love to have a chance to play as an MMO? Do you think there's a chance it might happen, or are you fairly certain that it's just going to remain an idle fantasy?

Shrike!
Seriously the best sci fi series I've ever read. I'd love to see it made into some sort of mini series as well.

Can't believe after 150 comments so far no one else has thought of Julian May's Saga of the Exiles! I'm just reading through them again and it's like they were written to be turned into an RvR MMO.

Days of our Lives MMO. Will you become engaged to Krystal, you can never have a bad hair day or will Beau enter Hope's dungeon? Ahh the possibilities!

Macross would be an excellent idea. It feels like it has the idea with an MMO already in mind. Perhaps it would have to be Robotech and not just Macross just so your not confined just to Macross City/Island, or the SDF-1. I suppose it could be Macross, after the planet was destroyed, and is now regrowing. That would give enough space.

Well,I simply don`t feel the epicness of LOTR due to various things.Things I wished were done differently are
1. The combat system
2. The classes...Minstrel,runekeeper and so,are lore breaking
3.The armors, are too fancy(some mask are a bit sm) :p
4 Some mobs design and placement are at times laughable

Didn't you ask this question a few weeks ago?
Anyway, I'll give the same answer as before: Mass Effect. If they could make a Mass Effect MMO that is half as good as ME1 and ME2, I'd be very happy. If it happens, it won't happen for a long time. They still have to release ME3 first. I think if TOR is successful, they will do it.

Sorry if these have been mentioned but there are two series that are prime for MMO territory in my mind at least
Jak & Daxter
Ratchet & Clank
both have a decent amount of known characters and locations that could be turned into quest hubs - plenty of known enemies in each to turn into bosses etc
and both have enough wide open spaces to potentially expand upon

Well with the release of Star Trek, I'm going to have to vote for Battlestar Galactica IP.

Shadowrun, as it should have been done. Not to be confused with the crappy microsoft game. Shadowrun done in the spirit of the original RPG books.

I've been saying it for years, but an MMO in the world of Tron would be the most awesome thing ever. Now that the new movie is being made it might actually happen. Hopefully Disney will be smart and have a decent game company make the game, rather then try to do it themselves.

Okay, everyone, let's all repeat the Mantra and get the message to the industry :

Mad Max. I know we have Fallen Earth. But I would love to see more focus on car to car combat. XD
A mecha based MMO that actually handles properly. Not that glitchy crap where you can't maneuver worth a damn.

Black Company - Glen Cook is God.
A Matter for Men - A War against the Chtorr, would be one of the greatest settings to run a game in.

I think Deadlands: The Weird West would be a great game. After a few years, they could expand it with Deadlands: Hell on Earth. The story and setting development is all there and all done. It's a matter of translating it into game mechanics, which could even take a lead from the original paper and pen mechanics (very little, but at least something to go off of).
As overdone as fantasy is, Wheel of Time could be a good setting for a game.
Iron Kingdoms (a paper-and-pen game by a company called Privateer Press) is a really great steampunk-fantasy setting that could mix things up with their version of "mechs" (warjacks).

Shadowrun.
The Lore behind this game is amazing. They have lots of races, lots of classes; could even make a classless game.
The Matrix (in shadowrun) would be groundbreaking.
Rigging would be ground breaking as a vehicle system.
The world is already developed.
Crafting is amaizing... bioware, cyberware, gear, gadgets, guns, armor, vehicles.
With all of the new hybrid mmorpg/fps, 3rdps games out I think this could be done very easily.
If only its done by a company willing to finish it before releasing it..... do those kinds of companies still exist?

Traveller, if you want to talk converted RP games. (Since the current iteration of D&D online sucks butt).
DOOM ONLINE. Play the part of marines vs demonoid monsters.
I really dig the idea of Xanth too... Or Thieves World....
