Already in the works, thankfully. Best world for an MMORPG though. Can't wait till it launches.

Yeah WoT. Half way through the 20 year development time the publishers allow the devs to publish a related single player prequel game. The world looks on in complete stupification as to wtf is going on with the supposed magnus opus of a game the devs are supposed to be finishing.
After this delay, just as the devs finally get around to finishing the game they all die in a freak accident but thankfully leave notes on how to finish it.
The lead devs wife contracts Cryptic to finish the game...The world laments what could have been!

DARKFALL by Zimmer. I am unsure if the Darkfall currently on the market is based off of her books, but, if it is they are woefully inadequate.

I've always thought that Babylon 5 would make for a good MMO. There's enough variation in the races, plus the political intrigue.

I think Cryptic is planning this using the CO engine -- STO re-skinned into several new IPs... B5, BSG, Buck Rogers, E.T., and Muppets in Space. One new MMO every 18 months. I gots me my Hot Pockets ready!

Pokemon. The very basis of the game screams MMO. If Nintendo weren't the company behind it, Pokemon would already be an MMO. Of course if Nintendo did make it, it would have friend codes...and no chat. /sigh

An open-world D&D MMO, with a focus more on adventuring, crafting, and roleplaying (but still with good combat) would be good as well.

The Ravenloft Series. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ravenloft
Give me an ongoing battle between Count Strahd and Lord Soth in a Gothic Horror setting.

Definitely Mass Effect. That would be even better than TOR imo.

Girl Genius: http://www.girlgeniusonline.com

I asked the Foglios about the idea at the last Windycon, and they said that they would LOVE to license Girl Genius to an MMO developer, but nobody has talked to them yet. So the rights /are/ available ...

Basically, ANY book that has established very large worlds and casts of characters. Books like George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series. Jim Butcher's Calder's Fury books. Pier's Anthony's Xanth books(this could be a humorous fantasy MMORPG).

I can go on. So much untapped potential out there, and for those "I don't want to see an IP, I want something original." Nothing is ever "truly" original, nothing is ever new under the sun. That being said lets go with IP's that haven't seen the light of anything other than their first incarnation, and a lot of those are in the form of books going back years and years.

Well IP's generally have a hideous track record but if I had to pick one I would go for:

Traveller by GDW (the original)

Everything else just pales in comparison.

I know it's already been mentioned, but Mass effect is what STO should have been. Choices, chances to avoid fights. exploration. crafting (somewhat). Done right, it would make a wonderful IP.

More importantly, I want a sci fi mmo. I've grown incredibly tired of swords and arrows. My first mmo (I won't count my few hours of Everquest before dumping the game) was Phantasy Star. Probably doesn't completely qualify, but Earth and Beyond does and I played that one next. I think that may be one of the reasons, I willing to give STO the leeway I have. I want to be in a spaceship. I want to shoot laser beams.

I hope Jumpgate and Black Prophecy don't stink. They have a wonderful opportunity.

I think you're forgetting what company made Mass Effect, and what MMO they're currently working on.
