There are certainly a lot of intellectual properties out there that would make for an excellent MMO. Running down the list of major games currently running shows no shortage of games based on popular franchises -- Star Trek Online, Warhammer Online, Star Wars Galaxies, Age of Conan, Champions Online -- and the trend shows no sign of slowing. But there are other franchises that could conceivably make a number of people happy -- Transformers, The Dark Tower, Doctor Who, Mass Effect, Babylon 5, and so on ad infinitum.
Of course, there are licenses that are unlikely to ever be adapted for MMOs, either because their heyday of popularity has passed or because they're just not in quite the right market. Still, we can dream, and in our heads we might have an idea for the world's best MMO based off of Macross. What intellectual property would you love to have a chance to play as an MMO? Do you think there's a chance it might happen, or are you fairly certain that it's just going to remain an idle fantasy?

I'd love to see a Dollhouse or Firefly setting for an MMO (both Whedon IP's), just because both would lend themselves well to multiple styles of play, varying quest types, and above all.. I'm simply a *huge* fan ;p

I'd love to see Car wars as a MMO. They had a version for the Commodore 64 called "Auto Duels", but it was single player, of course. Auto Assault was the closest thing to an MMO of it, but it seemed more like "Twisted Metal" than Car Wars

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes -- Car Wars would make such an amazing MMO.
EVERYTHING that makes MMOs fun is already in the IP -- crafting, building, repairing, skill-based, organized arena-based dueling, open-road banditry...
It could be kinda like EVE Online except instead of sterile boring spaceships it would be cars, machine guns and big bad-ass explosions.

Actually, there IS a Car Wars MMO. It's even turn based, you get to tweak the vehicles armor, weapon loadout, etc., just like Car Wars. Go check out Darkwind ( http://www.dark-wind.com ). It's very satisfying for this... just be warned, it is much more challenging than your average MMO.

omg. Steve Jackson Game's Car Wars? That would make an awesome MMO! The cars had polyurethane armor and electric power plants, but also some awesome game mechanics (especially for pieces of cardboard on graph paper) and a unique world storyline. I remember there was even a module released once for combining Car Wars with Champions.

Not Dark Tower.
The first 1/7th of the MMO would be great, 2nd would be good. It would start to fall apart around the 3rd, and by the end you will hate the developers.

Yeah, Firefly would be cool.
I'm thinking maybe some kind of Western, farming hunting, resource mining (gold silver), crafting, building, politics, trains, horses, lot's of woods, mountains, fishing, ranches, taverns, poker, cathouses, gunslinging, indians, cowboys, cowgirls, renegades, economy . The Wild Wild West

Yes, Red Dead Redemption looks like it is going to be one of the best western games I've ever seen. Thanks for the heads up. :)
Not to nag, but to make it more realistic, and to play more like an MMO. I'd add some very important qualities to it. To make it a western by which all western are compared.
1. It has to be for the PC also
2. Fishing ( you can hunt, you should be able to fish)... This would fill some of the gaps in an expansive world such as RDD. It would also add more fun.
3. A Homestead- A farm that can be built one log at a time or maybe a pre-built farm. This is where the player could store their items, decorate their homes etc.
The homestead is also where farming would take place, such as raising pigs, maybe cattle. And growing corn, various veggies, grain, beans etc. That can be used for crafting or can be sold raw, feed yer horses and cattle. you get the picture
4. Crafting- Players can craft various objects in the game from various things, such as making flour from wheat and cornmeal from corn, and cornbread from cornmeal. Stones for jewlery, decoration or resell to NPC.
Crafting would also include the use of fish for various things such as fertiliser, resell as food etc. Skins from animals into rugs, clothes, food, resell etc. Bones and stones into jewlery and so forth.
Note: Players wouldn't have to eat, but there would be a market for food.
The west wasn't just about gunfights, they were fighting for something. Their land, their food, their rights and simply surviving with what they had trying to make a better lives for themselves. Some in peaceful ways such as farming. The farm was everything, family was of utmost importance. Survival was #1.

I know this is kind of off-the-wall, but I'd like to see A Bug's Life. PvP could be possible between Grasshoppers and Ants, and there would be other races, as depicted in the movie (ladybugs, caterpillars, butterflies, etc). You could join together with others to form an anthill, where players could take on jobs and advance in the game by doing those.
Collectors can collect food, soldiers protect, etc. You'd have to deal with the effects of rain, beware of boss monsters like birds or rodents, maybe even the occasional human.
Not that this would ever happen. Or if it did, it'd be a cheapy web-based game meant for small children, but still. I love Pixar movies so I often apply them to MMORPGs in my head :P

Cyberpunk 2020
But of course, if the game design turns out to be bad, I wouldn't even try it out. I do not want to simply play another game, I want to play a MMO game that works, that is engaging, that is about interaction and offer choices, which works solidly, and a MMO which stand firm over time.
A player driver economy, character death, solid combat system, no elves, no buffs, no magic, no cheap "balancing" efforts, no invisible walls, no feature creep, no cheats, roleplaying tools, proper moderation, en evolving world.

Yes definitely Cyberpunk 2020.
It has all the things that would make a good MMO - Careers to match all styles of play from Solo to Medic, PVP content in the Combat Zone. Crafting for those who love to make guns, gear and cyberwear and a great backstory rich in detail with room to expand. And if you still enjoy your elves and dwarfs why not a Shadowrun MMO?

Mass Effect. Absolutely Mass Effect. It is one of the best new IP's of the last few years, and Bioware has already stated ME3 will not be the last game using that IP.
It's the Mass(ively Multiplayer Online RPG) Effect.

Hands down, I agree that Mass Effect would make a great MMO. They've developed a rich lore for the game. The combat style introduced in 2 would make for very fun action in a team of players. There's room to expand the skill system for more levels and a few more abilities per class. Plenty of races to make available at launch while still holding some back for expansions. And perhaps best of all, the game design does away with the Holy Trinity.
Of course, I'd also love to see Dragonlance as an MMO.

While I love the thought of seeing a mass effect mmo, I don't think it would work. While its an expansive storyline as a singleplayer game, but in an mmo setting I don't think there would be that much in the ways of content to keep people in the game long. After the epic battle against the reapers, what will be left? Usually the best way to go in an mmo is choosing an IP that has a huge amount of info to work with such as Dragonlance which someone mentioned. Generally something that is open ended or can be made open ended. My two cents.
