I had a lil look, but find no reason to join this extra service that has no actual intergration with my SL experience. And with LL's track record for "think of the potential" i cant be bothered to waist any time even thinking about it. (dammit, i just did!, thanx again LL)

/me wonders how soon Xstreet will become connected in some way introducing a global marketplace type affair... ponders and thinks some more.... or how maybe this is the start of a better "offline" communication system for SL?

Not sure they should have announced this until they could support the lag-inducing attachments of an SL influx.

But more troubling still is that I feel an almost angry reaction whenever I get a notice saying someone has 'shouted' at me which really feels contrary to the spirit of SL (main blog excepted).

"Dusan Writer has been shouted at by Tateru Nino"....oh yeah? Screw you and see you in Warcraft you lame little Palladin.

Look, Tateru, I've been trying to point this out all evening. You can register *any name you like ever* on Avatars United. Anyone. A Linden, Tateru Nino, Ordinal Malaprop, anyone. It doesn't matter whether they have registered before - it doesn't even check for duplicate names.

Is nobody going to bloody mention this? The fact that *this makes the entire service completely and utterly pointless, and in fact an enormous hole for fraud and impersonation?* Apparently not. Avatar names are just words after all, they don't really matter.

I'm guessing it's because some of the services they cover don't require unique avatar names -- so actually it is kind of what I *expected* from it, though I rather expected it to be disambiguated by service and possibly also email address.

And absolutely. There's no more trustworthiness in this service than in Facebook or any other social-networking service for the masses, which disambiguate on email address alone.

what if they will simply disable fake "xxxx Linden" AU accounts and implement a filter on names?

it doesn't appear a monstruous, impossibile task to achieve.

I don't want to appear rude by butting in to the thread, but have you mentioned that to Enemy Unknown, the developers? They keep a feedback link for good reason - speak up and it's likely this very common feature will be looked at. Like Tateru says, it affects Facebook, Twitter and the like just as often, and in 'Avatars United''s case I can see just why they allow multiple registered names - both my SL and Eve Online avatars are called "Sinnyo Wirefly". Am I expected to change either one to adhere to a restrictive naming policy?

Yeah I'm in the "meh" tinged with curiosity camp. Like everything else, we shall see. I have no intention of putting much attention into it until I see better integration and lots of bug fixing.

"being best known for it's strong application support of open-ended space-based MMOG, EVE Online."

I'm an EVE player, and it's the first time i hear about that site.
Does "strong application support" mean some web-based access to information provided by the (really wonderfull) game API, like hundreds of other sites? Or is there more to it?

Same here, I play EVE Online (or used to, my sub ended recently and I haven't resubbed yet due to real life issues) and this is the first time I hear about this.

I checked it out a few months ago, and unless they've added a ton of great new apps recently, the only cool-but-totally-useless thing is the EvE Achievements.

BattleClinic is still the best place for apps and EvE-related stuff all in one location. That I've found anyway.

I've been on Avatars United for over a year so it's nothing new, but there is an application that you also need the HUD for in SL so that it combines your actual Avatar with that of your Avatar United name. Blip is what its called and so far it works. Though I have integrated an alt account even that alt has their own Blip access separately.

Since I was a member there before Linden acquired it.. I actually like the site, not sure what they'll do it once they start messing with it, but I hope they don't ruin it.
