Will the STO players have to pay for this patch?

No but they can be pretty sure the game will be completely different from what they saw/played in the preview.....oh I'm sorry, "open beta."

Don't be so cynical. The patch will be free. But remember how you used to be able to earn every skill in the game? In the future, you will be able to pay for a skill cap increase or "level increase" as it is also called.

Borg Queen on the first patch. If ever I needed proof that the game will go down hill after launch.

No doubt to kill her you will have to have a life time sub and spend 3000 cryptic points to loot her.

Joke of a developer.

....but i bet they will be charging for alot of content additions coming in the future, no i don't play CO but come'on do you really think they are gonna manage/run this mmo different from their other...no way,, cryptic is the new SOE its not enough to make a good profit from a good game,,they have to squeeze every possible penny they can make and it gets tiring, paying for this, then that...

I can hardly wait to see another 40+ posts of "Cryptic sucks and just wants your money".

Cryptic are just in it for the money, which is fine, they are a business after all. But they could at least maintain the pretense that they are a respectable games studio, instead of looking like a set of money grubbers who only see their customers as big, fat cash cows to be drained dry and then tossed aside.

I've always wanted the lifetime sub to work. But having seen LOTRO turned into mini-expansions (I guess without subscriptions they can't afford to finance a full expansion), or the major content updates. I wonder if we'll ever get to see Mordor.

The spectacular fall that is HGL.

The debacle with CO, which no doubt gives Cryptic a lot of bad press on the eve of launching STO.

I'm sure the CO players are complaining in all the right channels, but the outrage has spilled across the MMO communities. I have yet to pay Cryptic a cent, but all the alarm bells have already gone off and I'm sitting on the fence.

We've been burnt by SOE, NCSoft, Flagship.... so many... We can smell the disaster in the horizon and we're speaking out.

STO really looks like a game I would enjoy, but Crytpic looks like a game studio that I'd loath.

I want to see how this one plays out.

Any Star Trek Online subscriber who thinks Cryptic/Atari are not going to try the same double-dipping MMO scam they've pulled on Champions-Online must be too busy with their heads stuck up their warp-cores.

Believe it!, it will happen - You will be A$$imilated by the Cryptari money-making collective.

Exactly what 'double dipping' are you talking about? I can look at their store now and all I see for sale are costumes that don't affect gameplay and services that other MMOs are charging for as well.

The patch will increase exp needed to level by 400%, and a few months from now they will add a zone to Sol which will have the planet mars in it that you can flyby but not actually land on, for the low low price of 29.99!

I don't follow a lot of different "communities" so maybe the other ones are just as whiny and spoiled as the MMO community often appears. It could also be the entitlement generation that the last hundred years of the US government has been raising. *Shrug*

Don't like it? Don't buy it. Move along. These aren't the droids you are looking for...

Are you daft?!

They've already admitted before that their game is content light and that they needed to add content for the community, but then when they decide to add it in they charge for it?!

Do you recall Age of Conan? There was a gap of content between levels 55 and 63 that left players grinding to get past just to progress to end-game. Funcom decided to release Ymir's Pass, a FREE zone for that entire level group (55 through 63). It was a huge content update and had a great story to it too. But it was free, because they knew how to please their players by fixing their game's content holes for free instead of charging for the fix.

Warhammer Online was a bit boring for it's end-game. What does Mythic do? They add in a new zone called Land of the Dead, completely free. It added in a ton more end-game content to the game, again, for free.

World of Warcraft with Zul A'man and Sunwell.

Lord of the Rings Online with it's Book Volumes.

Darkfall with it's 3 expansions.

EVE Online with it's many, many expansion.

Even Tabula Ras with it's Player Mech Unites and other content (on it's deathbed, no less).

Oh, and lets not forget Cryptic's first project, City of Heroes, with it's free content updates (that's a different developer team than the current Cryptic, as they stayed on when went over to NCSoft and is now part of Paragon Studios)

Every major MMORPG that has come out has given free content updates to fill in game content gaps AND to please it's PAYING CUSTOMERS**.

**Paying customers = paying monthly fees. As in, we're already paying extra per month to play the game and expect these updates and fixes, not having to pay more for DLC much like single player game does.

I'm looking forward to this - beta was fun this should just add to it. Of course, I'm not an uber speed leveling l33t fanboy needing to dominate with uncapped skill points, so take my opinion how you will.

Hopefully STO fans won't get trampled by the CO whiners here, but it will probably happen. I don't think any of these people saying "CO sucks so I won't play STO" have a clue how corporations work... for example Chevy put out the Aveo as well as the Corvette - two totally different products designed and built by two totally different teams. Furthermore, if you think CBS is going to let the Star Trek IP receive the same treatment as some second rate pen and paper superhero game from the 80s you need to pull your head out of your hind end. It won't happen. If anything evil is happening, Cryptic is probably using the money from the paid CO expansion to beef up STO.

Yawn.... more Cryptic haters who can't seperate one dev team and game model from another. How predictable.

Really if you don't like it, don't play it. leave it for those who do like it, (oddly no shartage of them) who will play it.

Cryptic deserve the hate they get. And this debacle with ST:O is just history repeating itself. Massive launch day changes, life-time subscriptions that you can only buy before you can try the game, subscription model game with RTM cash shop. It won't be long before they're selling new content, just like they are now with CO.

Wildwinds, you couldnt be more wrong:

Massive launch day changes? No. Hasnt launched yet but no major changes are planned.

Life-time subscriptions that you can only buy before you can try the game? No, Lifetime sub available after launch.

Subscription model game with RTM cash shop? Welcome to the modern age.

It won't be long before they're selling new content? No, it has already been said the next update will be free.

I would recommend doing your research and getting your facts right before posting. Or do you not care about the facts, and would just rather anonymously bitch about someone else.

Ah well, misery loves company doesnt it. The fact remains though, there are no shortage of people who really enjoyed the beta, who are eagerly waiting for the head start tomorrow, who will continue to enjoy the game after release.

It is unfortunate that Cryptic have done what they are doing with Champions, I don't disagree with that, and it's only natural that a certain amount of foreboding about the studio flows across from those rightfully disgruntled players to those anticipating STO. But is it really fair to assume one development team is going to be as shoddy as the other?

We really haven't seen evidence of this yet. I am quite sure the backlash Cryptic are getting from Champions might make them think long and hard about applying the same costing methods to STO. If they do, it will be their undoing.

Both gamers are overseen by the same people, Roper & Emmett so don't get your hopes up that they won't do to ST:O what they did to CO.
