I like how they have to mention it's free. Though most other games' content updates is presumed free until stated othewise...

...Cryptic seems to have that all in reverse somehow...I wonder why. /does the shifty eye thingy.

Cryptic has plans to charge for so many things, that they have to state what's free and what isn't (With their definition of "free" being you paying them $15 a month, to them, that's free!). The C-Store (their in game real cash store) is really going to be pushed foward and marketed a lot more in this game, with the need to buy much more from it if you want to experience everything.

I used to like it when there was a clear definition between "pay to play" and "free".

Seriously, for the $15 a month we should get everything. If they want to do another subscription type, say for $5 a month, and then sell them stuff from the C-Store, that would be different.

I'll play for a while anyway, then when Cryptic starts to fraction up the game too much with their money grubbing I'll go back off to something else.

Interesting, from reading some of the stuff in the patch it makes the game seem worth buying. I'll have to read comments about the content post patch before I consider buying it.

A word of advise - dont just read comments here and on the forums as they arent exactly neutral and may be considered partisan. I would read as much as you can from as many sources as possible - dont let the doom-mongers or fanboys opinions sway you either way and make your own decision...!

It's definitely a game you'll want to get a free trial for before buying. It's not for everyone, that's for sure. Lots hate it and a vocal minority will defend it. Get a trial or play on a friends account and make up your mind for your self.

Hope you can come back and tell us how you feel in 2 months. I think many of the people who are excited about this release are excited about the IP and not really the game itself. A little like I was with WAR.

@jordangeldart

To be truthful, WAR wasn't too bad in the lower leveled parts of the game (Tier 1 and Tier 2), but after that it was clearly an unbalanced very big cluster****. The developers didn't have a clue about the direction of their end-game, that's why they eventually even cut out the Fortresses (post launch!).

But, I also agree with you in that people are excited that "It's Star Trek!", as I was at first. But, I also became very realistic after Beta testing it that the game was something completely different with just the "look" of Star Trek, but none of the "feel" of it. There's no real exploration, no diplomacy, no discovery, no scientific advancements/experiments,...all it is, is "pew, pew, pew" with phasers and lasers.

Actually, I've been playing the beta and have been loving it. I'm a bit of an MMO virgin though and don't take them as seriously as the STO detractors seem to. I've enjoyed CoH for a couple of months but didn't think that a superhero game was worth that much money monthly. I also tried WoW a couple of times and could never get past level 12 without being bored out of my mind.

STO may be missing stuff that the hardcore (EXTREME!!11!) MMO player has come to expect but for an ordinary lifetime Star Trek fan like me, it's fun enough to see some of the stories based in the ST universe. I can't wait for Q, more of the Borg, different ships, etc. I will be enjoying the game for years to come and hopefully, so will every other subscriber.

Dont worry about the haters Maverick every MMO has them in ample numbers. You know the old saying;

You can please some of the people all of the time, or all of the people some of the time, but you cant please all of the people all of the time.

With Cryptic you need to add an additional part to that saying - and the rest of the time you charge them extra.

Well after today, they should all be flapping off to find another game to feed on, and leave us fans and players alone to enjoy ourselves. Hooray!

In 2 months time we'll be 'flapping' back here to ask you how your ORSUM game is going, and how much you're still enjoying (or even playing) it..
..especially those who stumped up for a lifetime.

Cryptic survive (prey) on folk like you - they're smart in that sense.

Enjoy!

What is ORSUM?

You're not going to be getting it, I take it. I'm still going to get it, but I'm not as excited as I was. An I don't know if I will be getting a multi month sub. If i Do, it will only be three because that is usually my tolerance for any mmo straight. I also have a lot of games on my plate.

I mentioned in the forums that a little time in ME2 has shown me that it doesn't take a whole lot to make hacking into a computer fun. At least way more entertaining than watching a progress bar.

heya dudemanjac.
Lol sorry - 'orsum' is ridiculous interwebs/txt-speak for 'awesome'.

Here's the funny thing - no I didn't buy it, but a friend of mine did buy it for me as an 'anti-present' (her words).
She took great delight in coming over and giving me a surprise gift over a couple of bottles of wine, and seeing my face as I unwrapped the box.
(If you think I'm harsh / fork-tongued, I've got nothing on her dry wit..)

So yep I'll definitely make a character just for giggles but no, Beta was enough for me (unless some launch patch radically changes the game - yah right). Even if I try to put myself in the mindset of 'Star-Trek-flavoured-casual-single-player-online-fun-distraction' I just can't get past the god-awfulness of the Champions Online engine and Cryptic design :S

I'm actually looking forward to spending February in SWG (with their free month thingy) and EvE, plus like you I have a metric ton of single player games that are crying for some attention (including finishing Dragon Age eep!).
I'd like to say I'm interested in ME2 but after playing it earlier this week I was kinda disappointed with the aspects that were dumbed down - I'll probably end up playing it a year after everyone else, like I did with ME1 ;p

Anyhow - to all you Armchair Captains out there, I do hope you have a fun launch and that nothing goes horribly wrong at Cryptic's end that messes up the experience for you.
Engage! =)

Ama old chap/lady/person, ask away, ask away. I'll give you an honest answer if you ask nicely. But I don't really like being lumped in with "people like you". 'People like me' are - oddly - people who happen to enjoy the game, despite people like you's pathological issues with the developers. ;)

I'm keeping this game on hold for a month or two to see what people
has to say about it then.

Perhaps I'll try it, perhaps not. We'll see :)

But after playing beta, I noticed some big issues it has.

1. Last century graphics.
2. Monotonous fighting.
3. Manufacturing line Space stations.

I think I'll have lots of fun playing through other RPG's like ME2,
Dragon Age Origins and Fallout while waiting for something better.

I think the graphics are great. Space is absolutely beautiful and the color palette is eye candy. :)
