There's a war brewing in Star Wars Galaxies. Well, to be quite technical about it, the game's setting is right in the middle of a war, but the most recent update brings that war even further to a head. In terms of storyline, the Empire is fighting a pitched battle against a renewed Rebel offensive to take key strategic points across the galaxy. The gameplay side of things sees a number of cities with capturable objectives, defensive fortifications to be built, protected, and demolished, and vehicles to use in the assault and defense of three volatile cities.
It's a big update, and for understandable reasons Sony Online Entertainment wants to show off what they've done with the game. So they're giving players a chance to jump back into the action. Between February 1st and March 1st, former players will be allowed to come back for free, with their accounts automatically reinstated for the month. Those who decide that toppling the Empire -- or defending it -- is worth re-subscribing will be rewarded with a special in-game painting. Star Wars Galaxies still has quite a bit of life left in it, and players should be more than happy with the amount of content in this new update.

I played SWG pre-NGE for a few months but never really found my place in it. I remember the first character I made was a musician, and while fun for a little I got tired of hearing the same thing all the time.
Still, I have always been intrigued by the 'Jump to Lightspeed' expansion. I used to love Tie Fighter and Xwing back in the day, and having an MMO where I could become a good pilot, buy a ship, repair it, etc seems like a lot of fun (I have no idea if it is actually like that).

@Damn Dirty Ape,
Actually that's a good comparison (Xwing vs Tie Fighter). For all the things that I'm not a fan of in SWG (pre NGE/CU or not), the space sections are a lot of fun in my opinion. If you like Freelancer, Xwing, et al, then you'll definitely get a kick out of the JTL content.
Plus of course it's great fun to bring others on (in) to your larger ships and fly around together.
My advice would be to have fun with it for the month for sure - nothing to lose except a download (if you're from a country that caps the internet).

This looks to be a great update for the SWG community, bringing the GCW to life more than it ever has before. I'm really surprised to see they added a feature for the neutral players, finally acknowleding the mercenary smuggler scum (I say that as a fellow Smuggler) in the community.
30 days to boot is icing on the cake.
Well done SWG.

to those that say the game has gone back to some of the things that made the original great: are you saying that you can't be a Jedi at level 1 now? Are Jedi so rare that you most likely would never see one on a server? Are you saying that the graphics have improved? Are you saying that I can have a variety of skills so that I can craft as well as shoot a gun? Can I have mulitple player accounts without paying extra?
SWG broke the hearts of many a player because it was a great game and granted, it probably still is. NGE was a huge boon to Blizzard and EVE who took many of the refugees.
I'll only come back after a graphics upgrade and when Jedi are all but extinct.
To the previous poster that mentioned that NGE was mention in PCMagazine...the NGE was an entire article in the New York Times. It's used as a case study in public relations programs around the country because the NGE was developed from standard PR tools - surveys and focus groups...all which said, "SWG is too hard for new players" and "It's too hard to become a Jedi".
The screenshot looks good.

I may just do that. Thanks for the info Amana. It could be a good way to distance myself from STO before I slip and fall into Cryptic's trap (they ALMOST got me with a pre-order bonus, but I snapped out of it).

Woops, this was supposed to be a reply to Amana for my earlier comment.

*Amana slaps Damn Dirty Ape to snap him out of his Cryptic trance

I'm reinstalling SWG myself as I type this. I mean whichever way you look at it, it's a great deal;
- an entire month of free-play
- something new and different to wrangle with (for those who've never dipped into SWG before)
- a game that lets you fly in space (with a 1st person cockpit or 3rd person ship view) in an Xwing, Tie Fighter and other iconic Starwars ships, including manning gun turrets in Millennium Falcon type freighters and actually being able to walk around inside them
- your very own customizable landspeeder from the starting quest (lead by Han Solo no less) unless things have changed since I was last there
- Computer Trading Card Game (just like EQ2's)
- and lots of 'Starwars moments' (either visually, aurally, or through storylines)
Yes, sure, it runs on a modified EQ1 engine and yes it's got it's fair share of 'dated' systems and eleventy-billion Jedi's running around, but if it's been a while since you've had a good 'ol Starwars Squee then there's no reason why folks shouldn't fire it up and have a romp, in my opinion.
And finally, compared to the fare we get dished these days, it's actually not that bad. It's infinitely more deep and fun than STO, and if you're looking for a comparative 'feel' I'd say Fallen Earth (the look, menus, general feel of playing).
Some guides here for reference: http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/players/guides.vm?section=1
This one in particular being handy for a quick guide to some features that aren't readily apparent: http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/players/guides.vm?id=80154
Feel free (anyone) to send me a tell: 'Amana Thrall' on the Bria server.

It's stagged events in phases over the course of like an hour or 2, every few hours. The 3 cities it takes place in are Bestine, Dearic, and I think Keren. You have quests to do for each phase on offense and defense(with special quests given for Traders to repair and build defenses, and Entertainers to boost the troops' morale). They added an interface where you can see GCW hotspots on all planets from anywhere in the galaxy. Plus some other crap, like raising the FPS cap from 30 to 60, and fixing the star Destroyers in the sky so their rear ends are visible and you don't see see stars through them anymore. I'm sure the patch notes are here somewhere.
