There's a war brewing in Star Wars Galaxies. Well, to be quite technical about it, the game's setting is right in the middle of a war, but the most recent update brings that war even further to a head. In terms of storyline, the Empire is fighting a pitched battle against a renewed Rebel offensive to take key strategic points across the galaxy. The gameplay side of things sees a number of cities with capturable objectives, defensive fortifications to be built, protected, and demolished, and vehicles to use in the assault and defense of three volatile cities.
It's a big update, and for understandable reasons Sony Online Entertainment wants to show off what they've done with the game. So they're giving players a chance to jump back into the action. Between February 1st and March 1st, former players will be allowed to come back for free, with their accounts automatically reinstated for the month. Those who decide that toppling the Empire -- or defending it -- is worth re-subscribing will be rewarded with a special in-game painting. Star Wars Galaxies still has quite a bit of life left in it, and players should be more than happy with the amount of content in this new update.

Seek counceling or take off the rose colored glasses, pre-NGE wasn't all that.
They didn't change it because it was an overwhelming success, they changed it because it was an unbalanced, broken, f*cked up, grindy mess of a game.

@Torak - which is why pre-NGE SWG is lamented about in nearly every game I have played since, right? There has to have been something to it, because an awful lot of people miss pre-NGE Galaxies, and an awful lot left never to return after NGE was set loose on the community.
Just saying...

You also see a bunch of people onthe WoW forums wanting pre-BC servers, but does that mean BC and LK were massive failures? There has to be something to it, because an awful lot of people miss pre-BC WoW, and a bunch left never to return after BC was set on the community.
It's easy to focus on all the criticism, because all the happy players aren't making forum posts or blog posts on how good the game is, they're actually playing. I guarantee you that 99% of the NGE haters haven't played it in the past few years after a lot of the NGE's bugs were fixed.

@RogueJedi - Well, this one did. I came back after NGE had been out for about a year and played for quite a bit, but it just never had the same feel to it. Its apparent that you two are both SWG fans, and this is cool, but you can't deny that the NGE did drastic and irreparable damage to a once thriving game.
It wasn't a "buggy" NGE that killed it, it was the go to bed one night playing one game, wake up to a totally different (and not as good) game the next.
I am not pining for pre-CU SWG, but you can not deny that the NGE was one of the absolute worst cases of how to handle changes to a game.
As for WOW and the other fellow saying that everyone rants, I agree. However, you do not see people complaining about BC in every other game you have played. I have seen that happen with the NGE.
Anyway, this does look like a nice patch for you SWG hold outs. Enjoy.

Is that why it has been noted as "The biggest mistake in MMO history" by almost every MMO site/journalist out there? Hell, I even think PCGamer put out an article after SOE's decision.

A huge mistake it may've been, but there's no law saying you can't improve after a mistake. They've done their best to fix up the game since the NGE hit. The addition of Expertise(SWG's take on Talent trees) adds some more variety to classes, and most of the NGE-caused bugs have been fixed, if not all. The mistake has been fixed, and the SWG today is what the NGE should've been when it launched in November'2005. It's still the NGE, but it's an improved NGE, and if you can't see past the NGE, I'll just call you ignorant for judging a book by its new ugly cover.

jslim, SWG was already losing players before the CU and NGE, or they wouldn't tried the CU and NGE. They sure didn't do them because the game was gaining players at a rate never before seen in an MMO. Pre-NGE SWG was a mess that was boring and full of "Flavor of the Month" profession specs, mainly any class that could deal damage to the unhealable mindpool(Riflemen and Swordsmen, plus the ever-OP TKMs). The game was boring because there were no quests until JtL added some quests (for Space), and the RotW expansion(which introduced a ton of quests, but also the CU). The only quests in the game were random mission terminal missions and random fetch quests from random commoner npcs, and possibly the vastly undertuned themeparks(Kill a fambaa for Darth Vader, really?).
So yeah, pre-CU/NGE wasn't this holy grail you people speak of.

Rogue,
Yet there were more people playing Pre-NGE/CU... A majority speaks. You might not have liked Pre-NGE/CU. The people playing now might not have liked Pre-NGE/CU, but the server merges, reports of "ghost towns", and the housing destruction events speak loudly about what the game has turned into.
I personally didn't want the NGE. If I wanted to play a game like WoW, I'd play WoW. That's what happened. SOE saw WoWs success (the NGE came out around the time that WoWs million subscribers was big news), and wanted to have that "success." Unfortunately, the hindsight of this was not realizing that the game they had was a niche title, that gave that niche exactly what they wanted. Limitless character combinations, open leveling, full crafting with crafted items deteriorating over time, and a game, although it did have it's bugs like every MMO out there does, that was unique to the market.
They took everything unique from it. All it is is World of Starwarscraft now.
Defend it all you want, but they start doing server merges, when half the servers population status were "Heavy" and the other half "Medium" before NGE, then after the release nearly all state "Light" NGE would be taking the cake with "boring." And the subscriber numbers back that.

Contact, I'm not the hugest NGE fan either, but I also won't whine about it. The NGE's been out 4 years, it's just annoying to hear people still complaining now. 2/3 of its lifespan has been the NGE, but people still balk like the NGE happened last week. Can you remember changes made to any other game 4 years ago?
SWG is still niche. The reason I don't hate it(and continue to indulge in it from time to time) is because I liked the niche stuff that was never touched by the NGE. I loved the housing system and the decorating inside them, and clothing customization, with literally dozens of colors for each of the dozens(if not hundreds) of different craftable clothings. I've seen an obscene amount of different costumes made using SWG clothing. From Spider-Man to James Bond to Naruto, I've seen it all. No other game has that amount of clothing customization(on top of the robust character creation system). That ties well into the deep crafting system that even today people remember fondly as one of the best systems for someone who loves to make stuff.

Logged in just to take a look and while I haven't really tried to make much of a difference, there was a lot of fighting going on outside Bestine. Walkers everwhere and enough lightsabers to give any pre-NGE forum troll an instant ulcer.
But all in good fun. More fighting outside battlegrounds is a good thing, I believe. The system behind it will have to prove its worth, I suppose.

I jumped back into SWG a while back and as much as i wanted to hate it, it was pretty fun if you haven't played in a while. It wore off within 2 weeks or so but for those 2 weeks it was kind of like hanging with old friends that you haven't seen in 20 years then after a few hours you realize what a huge douche they were and why you don't talk to them anymore.
So go have a beer with SWG but don't make any plans to go on vacation with them.

I would play it if it was FTP or much cheaper monthly. SWG isn't worth $15/month esp as once converted to £'s is too much.
I say go FTP sony and it will breath ne wlife into SWG!

JP: You can -- send in a ticket through their website and they'll move the character for you. However, I've read that they do charge you the full fee, and given how insanely quickly you can get back on your feet and leveled up on a fresh server compared to other games, it might be cheaper to you to just do that.

Thanks for reporting on SWG, Massively, however annoying it is to see the same people taking every mention of SWG as an invitation to repeatedly air gripes from half a decade ago (and bash a game they haven't played in at least as long). The current SWG bears very little resemblance to both pre-CU as well as NGE. It has been heavily developed since both and is in pretty good shape nowadays, if you can get over your grudges and obsession about a perfect pre-NGE that never existed and was actually pretty terrible in hindsight. Been back playing for two years now and am only more impressed -- best sandbox in town, better space than EVE and STO, better crafting than pretty much anything. People who are looking for linear gameplay rather than a persistent world, though, will never be happy for long here. Ignore the Jedi, hook yourself up with the pre-NGE UI mod and nHancer, read some guides, and you're golden.

I would agree they fixed much of the mess that the NGE was but They still took out the professions and thats what was my #1 gripe. I don't like the new linear level grind. My character is only like lvl70 since he wasn't a full template at time of NGE now i have to grind terrible PvE missions and its dreadful. I liked being a Dr. and making my money in the hospital in Theed selling buffs and socializing with a great community, not doing crap quests to grind levels.
