Remember the Save the Children charity event from Runes of Magic back at the end of November? Frogster created a special mount -- Moa's Charity Steed -- at a reduced price, and donated 3 Euros to Save the Children for each mount purchased.
The event lasted from November 20th until December 28th, and Frogster released the final numbers yesterday: "Thanks to the great efforts of our Runes of Magic community, Frogster has donated 40,000 Euros to the international charity organization Save the Children."
In those few weeks allotted for the event, players purchased over 12,500 Moa's Charity Steed mounts to support Save the Children, and the official announcement pointed out that 170 helpers from the charity are working in Haiti today, no doubt supported in large part by the generosity of RoM fans.
It's always great to see game studios and players step up and support a good cause this way, so we at Massively add our sincere thanks to Frogster's.

And in the process, they pocketed over $100,000 for themselves. Some charity!
I greatly preferred SoE's approach with Haiti. They sold the item and gave 100% of that money to the relief efforts. In addition, they matched up to $25,000 with their own money. In other words, they donated up to $25K, and also gave every penny that players donated. http://www.massively.com/2010/01/17/buy-special-station-items-and-soe-will-donate-to-haitian-relief/
Frogster turned a tidy profit off player charity, while SoE didn't make a dime for themselves. Which company should be getting praised here?

They all should be. How much or little they donated, how big or little the company, how they went about it, in the end they donated.
I don't like SOE anymore or less than Blizzard for the money they donated to charities over the holidays.
People who give what they can, give. I think it all helps in the end.

WoW did the same thing with their... was it the panda? I don't recall. Anyway, yes, this type of profiteering is despicable, especially since these mounts cost nothing in terms of production, like a tee-shirt or a pen or some useless desk bauble.

To all you whiners complaining that unless 100% goes to the charity, the company is the evil: do you think the people on the receiving end of the charity give a flying darn if 100%, 80%, or even 50% of the money get through to them? They are happy and thankful to be getting *any* help right now, and *that* is what matters. I'm honestly ashamed that grown people would complain about this. This was 40,000 Euros that would not have been raised had Frogster not done this event.

Mounts don't write their own code, dev's are allowed to make money from their work, but some went to charity. Win win all around.
