If you have an iPod, there is FFXIAH a app that feeds off of ffxiah.com to get auction house prices, as well as VanaMini, which is a timing app.

Recently I have though about trying FFXI, is it worth it to start playing after all these years?

Yes it is, but you have to be the kind of person to want to initiate, meaning actively look for groups both in game and on websites, like FFXIAH.com, it helps to research the game on the wiki and figure out how to start.

Helpful things to know right off the bat: Fields of Valor manuals, as soon as you exit your birth town there will be one at the gate, do those 'quests' and you'll level fast and get buffs as well.

Before you head outside to fight go see a guard and ask him for signet, this buffs you and more importantly awards you crystals when you kill mobs, which you can sell at the auction house for easy newbie profit. :)

Always check the AH for what drops sell, discard anything that doesn't either to NPC or trash. Especially if it doesn't stack. Buy armor and weapons from the AH, often the prices are less then the NPCs....

Except a complex and in depth game that does not hand you anything, you'll have to search and ask for help. But the effort is worth it imo. :D

Also, prepare for a very grindy game. Quests are few and far between, and usually only undertaken when necessary.

"(Killed in a Smiling Accident might contest that, I'll let them duke it out.) "

I don't think that would be advisable on our part, when one argues with [GM]Dave one tends to get eaten by a dragon at some point in the conversation.

Another good link is for the forums for Order of the Blue Gartr:

http://www.bluegartrls.com/forum/

for those that play wow, it's basically the ffxi version of Elitist Jerks, i.e. lots of advanced end-game type discussion.

Gonna have to second BG,
http://www.bluegartrls.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=53

Not posting about BG shows the apparent limits in breadth of knowledge this site has regarding FFXI. Arguably the most important FFXI forum this side of Japan.

Also,
killingifrit.com
(go drama)

And ffxiah.com
(quite possibly the most important of sites)

LJ community,
community.livejournal.com/ffxiljcommunity/

Quetzlcoatl Daily News,
qcdn.org

No LBR?,
http://limitbreakradio.com/

http://www.jpbutton.com/,
One of the best blog.

kanican.livejournal.com/
Another top blog.

My blog (not important like the rest of these sites),
shamayaasura.livejournal.com/

tarutarutimes-online.net/

Social sites (dk how successful or widely used),
myffxi.com (dead?)
vanadielprofiles.com/
I think guildwork will be a big thing when it comes out.
