I will be the first to proclaim my ignorance, but have they done anything to bring about more Modern Graphics? Even whey I "played" it 5 years ago it looked dated. Does this "viewer" address that?

That definitely DOES show your ignorance. ;)

SL is made by the users, not by professionals for the most part. it is entirely possible to have top quality looks in there - maybe not Crysis level, but certainly mass-market MMO level like WoW. I can even direct you to some very well done locations. But so long as people are happy with making a great big box with a badly done rip of an old Doom texture on it, you'll have to suffer everything inbetween.

There were some improvements to the rendering pipeline and graphics engine four years ago, and again a year after that. And lesser tweaks each year after. Except for last year which was quieter on the graphic update front.

The Graphics are as good as the area your in.. If your in a shotty area where the builds suck yes the graphics look like crap, but some of the best places in SL look amazing.

Viewer 2.0 should bring in new lighting, and a bunch of other rendering changes, but fundamentally the platform is held back by the consequences of making the content entirely end-user created. Still, there might be graphical improvements we don't know about yet, in the new viewer...

Shadows are done by Kirsten's viewer, so it is possible. However any major changes are unlikely as there will still be 1.25.x (and earlier) derived viewers out there.

If it is feature-complete, I'm not sure why any secrecy would be necessary, unless they're trying to manage an advertising/marketing campaign in conjunction with it.

Only the early build that we pulled out of the Lab's automated build system last year. I don't know how indicative that would be. It was pretty rough.

We've been offered early access to see it from the 8th of February, on the condition that we sign a three year non-disclosure-agreement with Linden Lab.

"We've finalized the features and the design, only a handful of users have seen it and they're all sworn to secrecy for three years."

When they made Ratbert a QA analyst in Dilbert back in the 90s, he invented a defect triage scheme:

Boneheaded
Vexing
Lethal

This design approach fits all three.

I really, really, really hope they fix the appearance editor to display avatar height. I'm really tired of having to effectively half the size of my land just because most people have no idea that their avatar is 7-8 feet tall. I'd love for them to fix the camera placement, too, for tha same reason.

That certainly needs doing! I once made the mistake of setting my avatar to my RL height .... and needed to jump to get to the door of the place I went to all the time.
