sorry for above post :/ dont seems anyway to edit it :p if a moderator can delete :)

well i could copy and past what welshtroll said
-my first mmo
-most awesome mmo time, "epic moment" have (had) a meaning in this game (once played 18h in a row...)
-ruined by hacker
-played since 2003 almost non stop, stopped for good mid 2009 coz of game filled with cheaters

would resub with pleasure if somebody could confirm that hacker / exploit have been reduced to reasonable level, being killed 1 time out of 5 by a guy called IIIIIIIIIII who fly and have instagib is of no interest

Planetside does have a trial, its a two week one but they don't tell you outright. You load up the station launcher, and you make a new account. Then when you log into planetside it'll ask if you want to try free for 2 weeks.

Planetside will always be one of my favorite MMOs. There is nothing quite like the feeling of a coordinated Gal drop on the roof of a heavily defended base.

Some of my fondest memories:
Vanny rushes (oh how I loved that tank)
The Phoenix (sooooo FUN to use)
Combat engineering (setting up mines, turrets, and proximity detectors)
The thumper (oh how I loved that grenade launcher)

Ahh, I can't wait for planetside 2. At the time even though I loved the game I didn't really marvel at the tech behind it, but having had nearly 7 years of gaming since then it amazes me to see new MMOs that can't even handle having 100 people in the same area (and they aren't even FPS games!).

Planetside was an amazing experience. I expected so many MMO's to follow the example, improve the mechanics, evolve.

Too bad something we know happened.

I think its originality can be resumed with

NO quests
NO PvE

And i'd like to point out that back then we assumed planetside wouldn't have lasted long.

The fact that the old kings were revived, that we turned back to the great games of the creative past, it's a sign of extreme decadence and stagnation.

Ditto the comment above... how could I have missed it? Might have to check it out.

Its amazing its still got legs. Then again the 2d MMO called Clan Lord is still going strong. I played that in beta.

New MMO makers don't seem to realise that they have to get the basics right for people to stick around. I am not sure how many of the current crop will still be around in 7 years.

Planetside is great... until you get bored, which seems to happen to a lot of people. It seems that the burnout point inevitably came for a lot of people including myself who played the game. There's almost no one who will deny how much fun the game is, but you just can't help but eventually lose interest after a few months or maybe a year.

Then there's of course the not so beloved expansions that keep people from coming back because they say it's just not the same anymore. Then again, I guess that happens a lot to SOE MMOs.

The player limit per side, per continent, is 133. So a full 3-way battle would have almost 400 people. It was great in the early days when there were 3 of these going on at once on multiple servers, now it's hard to find one. But the game is still unlike any other, and that makes it a lot of fun.

Unfortunately SOE has been secretly dumping a lot of resource handling to the client in order to cut costs on the server side. This causes problems with lag sometimes and makes the game harder to run smoothly.

I tried Planetside right after it came out. A couple of buddies of mine from work got it and were raving about it. They gave me a guest pass or something. So I tried it, and I wanted to get into the action and join them. They were on another continent or something. I asked them how to get there, they said take the shuttle. I go to the shuttle, it says I have to wait TEN MINUTES for the next one.

So I resign myself to not being able to join my buddies at that time, which really irked me. I try the instant action button, and after about 5 minutes of it doing absolutely nothing, I gave up and decided to play something that actually let me play the game instead of sitting around waiting for mass transit. I can do that in real life, thank you very much.

Love the idea and the concept, but the game didn't seem to want to let me play so I decided to oblige them and not play.

jeez. Talk about a need for instant gratification.

Don't ever play EVE.

Instant action takes 10s, and the HART goes every 3 minutes. You're not guaranteed to get to the main fight with IA though, so the best/fastest way to get where you want is to cert a vehicle of some kind and use the warpgates. I'd suggest making a trial account for free and giving it another shot if it still interests you

Almost all of my most memorable MMO moments are from Planetside (the rest are from EverQuest and City of Heroes/Villains).

On Werner server we would have alliance nights where all the main NC Outfits (5-7, each contributing at least 1 platoon of 10-30 players) would organise with a proper chain of command on Ventrillo, to carry out combined arms operations with military-like discipline. Seeing half a dozen full Galaxy dropships in the sky, almost nose-to-tail, making their troop drops one after the other - or 20 Liberator bombers flying in formation towards a base to carpet-bomb it while dozens upon dozens of our Vanguard tanks and Thunderer APCs crossed the ground below to mop up afterwards - are just the most epic things I've ever been part of or seen in an MMO.

Then SOE stupidly introduced BFRs and caves (pretty much killing the ground battles between bases), slowed down development of the game and just let the subscribers drain away. I quit when I was logging in every night, but only experiencing a pop-locked continent with big battles raging once per week for a couple of hours. Planetside is all PvP with no PvE so it needs a vibrant and massive community to thrive, and it just doesn't have that anymore, sadly. Without massive battles the game is a faint shadow of what it once was.

Add me to the list of those totally bemused that in the past few years nobody has launched an MMOFPS with the scale and scope of Planetside. I almost hate to say it, but SOE were way ahead of their time with this one. I really do hope that Blizzard's secret MMO is a Planetside-like MMOFPS, and I hope it will be successful, because with WoW having bland-ified the MMORPG market I'd be quite happy to see the next 5-10 years being full of Planetside clones - some of them might be good! (before the innovation-less boredom set in - though arguably online FPS games are already there).
