From a decent launch to one server and a playerbase smaller than EVE i am truly suprised this game is holding on by its fingernails. With ground quests that were identical (map and objective wise),no matter where you went, no goal in the game overall, a tiny world, bugged port battles, and "stealth ships" and finally the "red circle" this game went down the tubes incredibly fast. May my ship of the line rest in pieces.

Another history lesson for devs not wanting to listen to their sub demographic and doing what they wanted and instead doing what devs want to do.

It is an ok game with a lot of potential, too bad unfulfilled potential is something that doesn't count for much after 2 years.

Let's hope STO will not follow it its footsteps, because both games seem to use very similar mechanics for ship and avatar combat, except Potbs has very complex (demanding) PvP/RvR system as its end game, while STO endgame is still a mystery.

It's a shame Graill felt the need to write a response without knowing and/or stating the right facts.

There are currently still 6 servers, though the 5 US/EU servers will be merged to 2. The 6th server is a Russian server operated by Akella, which does seem to be a decent success.
Yes, there are less players than EVE. And I am very glad for EVE that they managed to create a world that can house such an amount of players. But PotBS has roughly 100 times as less 'areas'. Translated to 3 PotBS servers that should mean a highest peak of concurrent players of 1500 (feb 2009 numbers). PotBS probably doesn't reach that, but EVE is several years older after all. I actually prefer a smaller playerbase, though EVE is around the max I'd like.

Yes, many ground missions played in the same environment map. But more and more missions have been revisited. And it's not like PotBS is the only recent MMO that wasn't fully polished. Also, ground-mode was added late in the development process and I am really glad they added it. If that results in initial reoccurring areas, so be it. In my opinion the story told in missions was much stronger than found in other recent MMOs and that weighed much higher than reoccuring areas.

Funny that hardcore MMO gamers keep asking for (more) end-game content. And PotBS actually has that. PvP but more so meaningful RvR between the 4 nations (though not always balanced, it is much better than the 2-faction system larger MMOs have). The mentioned red circle is an inherent part of the RvR content. RvR would be meaningless without an impact on the game world.

And yes, PotBS had an has bugs. But it is a joke to say that MMOs are inherently bug-free. Sure that is a shame. But Flying Lab Software is still quite involved with the playerbase. Yes a smaller playerbase makes that easier, and I guess that's why I prefer that.

No, I do not play the game itself anymore. But maybe I might start playing a bit with friends on their trial again. The point simply is that PotBS is filling a niche. And just because there has been a series of popular pirate based movies is in no way comparable to the fanbase the Star Trek IP has, which will probably create a hge initial success of STO.

Flying Lab Software is still hard at work, currently for regular patches but also for an upcoming free expansion which will add things like player governed ports. This should only increase the RvR in the game.

Congratulations Flying Lab Software and players, here's to many more years!
