Got a couple hours to burn? Love Star Trek and subsequently find yourself enjoying Star Trek Online? Well, we've got a couple videos you may want to watch, for entertainment purposes as opposed to tips related purposes. Giant Bomb has two -- although the "parts" aspects suggests further entries -- videos of a few guys sitting around playing Cryptic's upcoming Trek MMO and, well, basically being silly dorks. They start at character creation and hit the ground running, all while providing the kind of commentary that quite possibly could make you want to have on headphones if you're on a lunch break at work.
It's fun stuff, and if you've got some time to kill the videos will most certainly help make time fly by more quickly. You can find the two videos embedded after the break.

defend what you want tim, but here is how I've seen everything-
'patrol system x' warp in- kill Klingon Patrol. Scan Item Z. Warp out.'
I've actually played the SAME EXACT QUEST twice with different planet names.
my other gripe is the auto-team thing (which, after disabling, I liked the game a whole lot more.) The way that enemies scale means that if your team doesn't work together, you're going to get ripped apart. This sounds stupid, because your in a team, but you never asked to be in a team. My recommendation is to turn off the auto-group option.
If i'm continuing to pick on the game, I'd say that hailing starfleet makes the quests feel disjointed and trivial. I think I'd much prefer having to travel somewhere to turn things in, but that might just be my Wow showing.
Don't get me wrong- I'm still playing the game- I just can't see it having legs for 50 levels, when I'm repeating content before I hit level 10...

Watched about 2 minutes of the first video before wanting to stick knitting needles into my ears. The commentary from those idiots just messes with my head.

I dont get you guys, you say this game is single player, but whenever i do a mission 4 times out of 5 i get grouped with 3 or 4 other people.
Which kind of pisses me off as instead of 3 frigates or 1 cruiser spawning i get 2 battleships, 1 cruiser and 3 frigates.
You people say that you wont pay that much cash for a game, but lots of people paid how much for MOD 2 which has how much 5 minutes of single player?
And also people remember BETA repeat after me BETA. When the game is released then bitch about it.

I am very doubtful if this game will change one bit before release from beta.
Cryptic seem to use beta's as a marketing tool rather than to test the game. They will not make changes before release other than bug fixes.
They announced the release date ages ago when closed beta was barely going, if at all.

Is there ANY word on when/if they will have full support of joystick control? I really want to fly my ship with a joystick but I've yet to get it to work in any beta.

Star Trek nerds are going to love it. I admit to having fun with the beta, its good for a laugh. Is it worth the price they are charging for it in current form? Not on your bloody life, there is more variety in the free to play Earth Eternal. I am shocked its so lacking and in OB already, its slick but feels a bit half-done.
Oh yes and combat is basic at best. The space combat reminds me of the Star Trek like game back in the 80s on computers.

The thing that bugged me the most was the instances. The tutorial gave me a good idea how to play the game but that many instances in the beginning left me feeling like they could have done a much better job connecting areas of that ship to make it feel like I was really immersed in a ship.

Star Trek Online plays like a single player game. A bad one at that. An MMO isn't just where you see a bunch of people running around. It's interacting with them. Not shoving each other around trying to get to a quest giver.
It's just feels like people are in my single player game interrupting me or just feeling in for npcs to make the lands "look" real.
Sorry just my opinion. I actually enjoyed the ground combat some believe it or not, it didn't feel ho hum. Space combat was dull..Sorry but honestly, I want my Space combat to be like Star Wars Rogue Squadron on Gamecube.

Then star Trek was never going to work for you. These are big ships that are going to handle slowly. You may want to wait for Jumpgate or Black Prophecy. Both are late for varying reasons, but I would imagine you will be seeing something in the way of beta soon, especially since Jumpgate's beta was scheduled to be out last summer and BP's insolvency? problem has been solved.
In almost every mission I did yesterday (even a simple fetch 4), I was automatically grouped up with strangers that either stuck around to do more or broke up and went our seperate way. In fact, I saw plenty of ppl grouping up to do patrol quests. I did the lower have of the first map with a group of 4 ppl. Only time there was any shoving was for the first mission. After that, I called from my ship.
You are one of the very few I've heard say that they liked the ground combat more than the space combat. But I guess it takes all kinds. Unfortunately for you, that's the smaller part of the game by far.
Good thing about this game is that it can be ass mmo as you want it. There is an option to turn off the auto grouping. You can turn of the chat. The missions scale depending on how many ppl you have in your group. Maybe if the auto grouping isn't working for you, try starting a group before hand. A couple of times, I waited a minute before starting the mission just to see if I would be alone. I don't think that's necessary, but I did anyway.

Nope, I won't be playing Star Trek! I wish there was more of the ground combat and exploration. I was hoping Star Trek was going to be more about exploring new worlds and life, not a circling around enemies all day in a ship! (Thought I'm not saying I'd want the ship part to be cut out!) I happened to thought Star Trek was more than that and so much more could be done. Instead it's Champions Online with a few changes! Oh well! :)
I'm more into fast paced combat that requires strategy. Not slow combat that requires strategy ;) But some people prefer the slowness I guess, not me!

From what I'm told the exploration stuff isn't in yet, which is good. For a while I thought the exploration was going to be the searching of areas like Delta Volanis. I wonder if those are random.
