My small tip , right click the icon for your weapons to set them to auto fire.

Makes combat in space and even ground to some degree much easier and quicker.

He's got you there, Kyle. It really is a leveling up system.

With all of the impressions I was getting of this game, I am blown away, it's a lot more fun than I thought it would be. Well done, Polished, Fun, Good job.

Thanks for the Beta key, I wasn't going to buy this game right away, but now I think I might, because it's fun.

Great write up. STO is definitely one of those games which isn't as easy to pick up as it looks.

I have to say, having played CO (and hating it for its grindy goofiness), and with all the negativity surrounding STO, I was expecting it to be a boring cop-out. I am extremely surprised at how polished and fun the experience is.

Apart from feeling like a hobbit because of the really, really high ceilings, I'm loving it thus far.

I agree, the scale of doors is way to big compared to the player avatar. Also, the avatar collision boxes are also a little large.

While I was downloading the Open Beta, I watched a closed beta a video of a TMP Connie flying around DS9. The scale was way off there too.

Both are minor issues but it does break immersion.

For space, Engineers specialize in Cruisers, which are meaty mammoths equipped with large crews and sizable weaponry. Escorts are smaller, faster and much more heavily armed ships that dish out far more raw firepower than they can take. Lastly -- but of course nearly as important -- are the Science ships, which support allies and weaken enemies.

The same tired old trinity of tank heal dps again. Zero points for originality.

The holy trinity via spaceships? What! I'll probably give it a shot at some point but come on...*silent scream*

Actually, if you pick an engineer you don't have to use a cruiser.
You can spec for space combat to be completely different from ground
combat. Mix and match if you like. The 'class' you pick mostly affects what you can do in ground combat.

In regards to the holy trinity, why don't you come up with a fourth type to the trinity then if it's so 'tried'. Can you come up with something thats different to heals/tank/dps that would aid the rest without an overlap? Doubt it. its the 'holy' trinity for a reason.

Vidarr it is real easy to move away from Tank heal DPS - lots of games already have. Look at the space ships of EVE for about a thousand examples.

To be honest the biggest problem I have with Tank Heal DPS is the silly taunt mechanic that comes along with it. The notion that supposedly intelligent enemies mobs can be fooled into attacking an ugly brute in Heavy armour who is putting out 1 dps while the guy in the fliimsy dress behind him is raining down fireballs is sooo past its sell by date.

Yes BUT you Don't have to fly a cruiser as an engi! In fact a tactical in an escort may have the most dps but they will also blow up if you glance at them. I fly an engi captain in a science ship and it rocked.

PLUS you can own all of the ship types, you get one for free but the rest are purchasable so you can specialize load-outs etc. for particular needs.

Holy trinity, not so much.

I have learnt more little tips on this post than I did playing for 3 hours in the game - keep 'em coming! :)

I was going to ask this in the official forums but wonder if anyone else can answer it:
On away missions, if you right click the BO special ability (next to his/her name) it goes red - does this mean you are turning off the auto-attack for it and leaving it on (I think the colour is blue) means that they will use this power whenever available?

Yes, right clicking the BO ability turns it off. By default it's on and they use it at will. Additionally, you can left click it and make it go off.

For example, I'm an engineering capt with a medical healing terminal, and I have an eng away BOff with a shield one. He normally puts it anywhere, out in the middle, and it gets blowed up. Instead, I drop a combat shield, put mine behind it, step him there and force him to put his down there too. He puts it where I want it, it lasts a lot longer, and is much harder to kill.
