When it comes to character deletions, just about every MMO out there has a clause in their Terms of Service that indicates they have the right to delete your characters at any time and for no reason whatsoever. With that said, there are very few companies that choose to exercise that right.
Up until now it has been Square Enix as part of Final Fantasy XI (even then they occasionally restore characters as part of 'welcome back' promotions), and Alganon's new "trial" which allows you to play for 30 days free before they wipe your character if you don't subscribe. However, as you can see from the above image, Funcom has opted to join the ranks of "will delete characters" in regards to Age of Conan.
When contacted for comment about whether or not this was true, Erling Ellingsen, Director of Communications for Funcom said, "Yes, that's correct. It's a database clean-up. We're going through all accounts that's (sic) been inactive for a long period of time, deleting characters under level 20 to free space in the database."
The first 20 levels, often considered by many to be Age of Conan's tutorial levels, are primarily spent leveling through a single-player adventure with some multi-player aspects in the city of Tortage. The fact that you have to level past this solo-heavy content when you start a character gets a little old for players who just want to play with friends. As Funcom are now choosing to delete the 1-20 characters of inactive players -- potentially nuking inactive bank alts in the process -- it's going to be interesting to see how this plays out as a long-term strategy. Will it bring back inactive players, afraid of losing a bevy of below-20's? Or has Funcom just alienated people who were planning to come back, but now don't want to take the chance that their characters will potentially become clean-up fodder down the road? Time will tell.
[Thanks Jonathan!]

Why am i an idiot? Because i bought the game and paid a monthly sub, and now they want to delete 3 of my alt characters? Stop being a fanboi and see that they are trying to force people to play. If they were only deleting toons that were free trial that would be different, but they are not, they are deleting everyone who hasn't been active.
I was waiting for the expansion to get back into the game, now i will not. It's my money and my OPINION, so i will say and act on it how i feel is right. If anyone here has made them self look foolish it is you, defending a bad company no matter what they do.

It's amazing how many trolls will jump on the bandwagon of a half piece of news taken out of context as an excuse to bitch and moan about a game they have never played or played more than a year ago.
So, you didn't like the game? Get the over it already and move on.
The fact is that some of the servers are merging and as a result accounts that haven't been active for a long time (over 7 mths) will have low lvl characters deleted. Big deal. 1-20 takes a weekend or two? If you canceled your account 7 mths ago it's pretty unlikely you are going back to the game, especially if you never even got over level 20.
This not only frees up disk space but also frees up a lot of names that are locked but not in use any more for other paying customers to use.
Get back under your bridges trolls and get over it.

I got the email, it's fine, they can delete them, It will just decrease the chance I will play again to 0% instead of 20%. Though, I am pretty sure I was above 40 and still got the email.

I'll say it again...
"The gist of the complaints seem to be, "The game sux! I hate it! I was thinking of never coming back, but now I really, really am not coming back!"
Okay, we hear you! Bye! Wait, you were already gone... so what is the proper salutation for that? Really...
This announcement was more for the active players who may be able to get some names that the non-players have held.
Again, Funcom gave HUGE incentives for previous players. They are just being polite in kicking your dead arses out the door."
This is going on 6 pages of people who have some expectation of compensation for nothing! You were never coming back anyway, so what's the issue?
Get over yourselves ya bunch of trolling moronic babies!

Well, I was thinking of having a break from WoW and seeing how badly AoC and WAR suck these days.
I guess I don't need to bother with AoC now...

Actually, Ulurjah, that's what I thought too. The alt whose server got shut down even turned up as "Nameofguy43423432" on the new server, and I was mad.
But the first time I logged onto the character, I got a free rename. I had to go through the "find a name that's not taken" guessing game, but at least the number wasn't permanent.

sugewise - I do not even play AoC so how am I a fan boi?
You are an idiot because you seem to think that Funcom owe you something because you played the game over 7 years ago.
As for your opinion - you are free to have one, like so many people on the internet, it does not make it a valid one.

You know, I *was* annoyed by the mail- but only because every single time Failcom send me a crappy attempt to persuade me to come back to their game, I use their lame unsubscribe thing.
They're basically no worse than spammers- it's like they use the unsub to confirm that your address is valid.
Ok, so secretly I am also sore at being reminded that I actually paid for a copy of that crap-tastic game, after reading a load of what were probably bought reviews. I'd rather Failcom left me the hell alone now.

Reading all the negative comments of how "I was going to resub" or I bought the CE "failcom this" and so on is like listening to those hypocrites plaguing funerals.
Get over it,most of you have not played the game for more than 6-9 months and would have never come back.

As one who has never played this MMO, Or Warhammer .... Nuke the Freaking characters of the DATABASE... they are wasting precious kb's of space.
I knew this game was ment to fail.. cause their was never a console port of it.
I guess Warhammer is next, seeing as the NEXT MAJOR wave of MMO's are HERE: Star Trek Online, Global Agenda, MAG(lol) and next year Star WarsTOR (Bioware your our only hope... The Blizzard Empire has its Death Star inconstruction...).
Oh yeah almost forgot GUILD WARS 2.

Am I the only one catching the fact that hitting 20 in this game is about as easy as logging on? It's even easier than it is in WoW. On top of that, most players even get free items to /claim in order to further speed up the process.
If you're whining about some placeholder lowbie you registered a year ago getting the boot, then chances are that you're not going to be spending an enormous amount of time with the game, ever.
I know it's a tragedy someone's going to get the name Bonan that you had saved on a level 4 Barbarian (on a game you don't play no less), but I'm sure most of you will find some way to get over it. Feigning righteous indignation is step one through the healing process.
