You can't judge the community just yet. The "Omgz Noobz" stuff doesn't start to show up until about 4 months down the line and is inevitable in any MMO out there.

That said, I won't play it because I got bored with WoW.

I played this game in Beta and while it had some strong points I just couldn't find any reason at all to pay retail for the game and a monthly sub. The amount of players that logged in asking if it was free to play was astounding and really the game felt like it should be.

The skill system is a nice idea but if you log into Runes of Magic or Allods for a few minutes the difference between the games polish is so noticeable and they are both free to play and one is still in beta.

The wow clone label was there for a pretty good reason, everything about the game's ui and hot keys was virtually identical. Maybe the overall game wasn't a total clone but initial impression means a lot and it's first impression screams wow. I can see why some people would like the game but honestly almost anyone who is playing right now is playing more for what could happen down the road versus what is there now. I hope the developers stay true to what they have said because it could be a solid game if they do that.

I beta'd and free trialed and without going into a huge long post I completely disagree with you. If I had never heard of WoW I would still think Alganon was a bad game. As it is I think its a bad game AND a blatent rip off.

You only have to take a look at the soldier class after playing a warrior in WoW to see that huge chunks of the ability and talents have been copy pasted.

To add to all of the above, my ghod, the graphics look painfully like the devs simply ripped objects out of WoW and pasted them into their game engine. I was womndering for a moment of I wasn't just looking at WoW screenies run through a blurring filter or the like.

"despite the constant negativity this game gets, it still has many loyal followers"

Really? How do you explain the reports of less than 100 people being online during primetime, then?

This game is just freaking awful. Even for a wow clone - it's one of the worst.

I like the fact that they pretty much say simplicity and being a wow clone isn't a big factor, that's the MAIN factor people didnt like the game.

If you are going to make a blatant wow clone, at the very least dont have the nerve to charge users for it, make it f2p. Becasue guess what - if people are given the choice between wow and a substandard clone, guess which ine they will pay the subscription for?

Seriously, Id like to know what kinda crack these guys were smoking to serisouly consider they had a snowballs chance in hell to make this a viable business venture.

Okay a lot of people put in some hours on the game... but if thats all it takes for Massivley to give an MMO some front page space then why dont we see any of the other new independant (which are better by orders of magnitute!) MMOs getting airtime here...
Alganon, having played it, it just terrible, and yes i feel bad saying that as real people did work on it and woul have done so with opes for the best... but it was not to be, and there are PLENTY of other MMOs with a lot of hard work behind them out there just as deserving of some coverage. SO why Alganon? Why now? Does Massively need to put an "advertising feature" at the top of some of these "editorials"?

I can tell you exactly where this game will be in 6 months to a year. At the 6 month mark, it'll be Free 2 Play. In a year, shut down :)

I find it interesting that you can study weightlifting to gain strength and not actually do anything that would actually increase it. There is nothing satisfying about the studies system, unless you are a twit that doesn't want to play the game anyway. What exactly is the point of being able to level offline? I never understood this as a selling point to an MMO.

Hey, you can gain .1% extra damage by using a system that allows you not to play the game? Studies are nothing but fluff thrown into the game, the actual benefit is tiny and the amount of time needed to spend on them to min/max a character goes against any logic.

Once you hit 50, you will probably spend 99% of your study time trying to make your level 50 character extremely efficient (which is the goal of the system), but the system precludes any other character from being able to study at the same time. Meaning any alt you create will have to be on a different server or else you probably won't invest more than the base study points into them. (By base, I mean the skills that take less than a day to study.)

I am sorry though, this is a simply a paid for advertisement. Simple as that. Massively should be ashamed for running it. You are admitting that the only real selling point to an MMO is the study system -- which you don't have to even play the game for. Outside of that you are attempting to sell the game on hopes and promises. A game should deliver a playable and fun experience from the beginning. It should not be an exercise in mediocrity and promises. When a game is launched with less than 1/8th of the map available, no instances, no PvP, 4 classes, 2 races, a clone of the WoW UI, very basic combat features and a host of known bugs... even if the available game play is "fun" what is going to happen at level 50?

On top of that, the trial was reduced to 7 days from 30, and the whole "soft launch" ordeal. I would rather not give my money to this company.

If you hate the game, you'll be outraged at the tiniest positives in an opinion article. If you love it, you'll be outraged at the tiniest negatives. It's human nature.

I for one found Shawn's and Eliot's pieces very informative....even if you'd never catch me dead playing it. Least you guys are giving the game a fair shake even when it's not popular. Just saying.

No Shawn you miss the point.

By glossing over the huge glaring faults with the game and trying to put positive spin on some alleged positives, of which I am buggered how you could find in this steaming pile of crap, it appears to the rest of us regular readers that this is nothing more than paid for comment. Whats worse is when the authors of the blogs choose to belittle its own readership while pimping Alganon's marketing line verbatim, or saying "If you hate the game, you'll be outraged at the tiniest positives in an opinion article. If you love it, you'll be outraged at the tiniest negatives. It's human nature." Its bollocks, you know it, I know it, Massively readers know it.

Every game has its fans and detractors - thats human nature. But anyone who actually took the time to download Alganon, of which I was one, and put more than a few hours into it, just like many of the posters to these Alganon blog articles in Massively over the past few months, recognized and posted up their findings in articles about this turkey. Apart from a few shill 1 time pro Alganon posters that post and then disappear the overwhelming response from actual MMO players and Massively readers was that Alganon was a turkey that blatantly ripped off both WoW and Eve shamelessly. Since then both yourself and the other pro-Alganon blogger on this site from page 1 of this 'article' have glossed over the glaring faults and ripoffs of this game. Massively also gave the Developer airtime and his 'interview' was one of the softest I have ever seen on this site.

From what I have seen over the past 2 or so years I've been reading here the average regular poster here is pretty savvy and dedicated/passionate about his or her gaming, even the rabid WoW/Eve fanbois and the WAR haters ;) To belittle their own research and test play observations so that you can shill for the developer is pretty disingenuous at best.

Take a look at the comments posted here on Page 2 and back on Page 1. Go back through all the other Alganon articles. If Massively readers - your audience btw, all keen MMO gamers putting their own money into 1 or more monthly subs ( I have 4 current monthly subs and have many months of game time played in most of the mainstream MMO's), are overwhelmingly saying that this is a turkey then maybe you might want to take a look at what they are saying and test and report on it indepth instead of belittling them or repeating the Devs marketing hype verbatim?

I have been playing Alganon for a little over a week now and reguardless of what I have read here I am accually having a great time. I was a bit disappointed in the trial version it was simply dead, void of people. I was however happy to see that the trial was stand alone from the accual game. Theres some bugs, but honestly what game is bug free? I don't think this game is getting a fair shake in my humble opinion. Is it a clone? Honestly I could give a sh** less. As far as I see it thats just 150.00 a year im not paying to play WOW. Somone mentioned above that Runes of Magic is better. Have you accually PLAYED Runes of Magic? If your not shelling out 100.00 a week your not going to get anywhere on that game. Friend, thats alot of money. No, no one payed me to comment. As a matter of fact I run a very large guild on Runes Of Magic as seen here www.manylegions.com. I speak from experience. Did it rip off timed skilles from EVE? Again, who cares. I can't play games 24/7 and it gives me a chance to level when I am not on, I love the idea, wish all MMO's would incorperate that. All and all the game is cheap and fun what else matters?
