Hmm, the last time I heard "You users want this feature but it isn't in our philosophy" was from someone in a startup that bankrupted one or two years later due to lack of clients.

I find that interesting.

Because when I read it, It actually excites me. Finally, someone is trying to purposefully break some conventions that dare I say it, are entirely too typical in this industry right now.

I read that, and think, wow, maybe this is a project that despite my initial impression has some conviction about the direction and differences its trying to go in.

I will be trying it out.

I was just pointing out that "we don't listen to our users requests" can bring some problems in the long term.
For example, I've read about a leveling zone in which you're always pvp flagged. Some are complaining about that: "we don't like PvP and don't want to be forced to".
Should they leave it as it is (and maybe lose some users) or say "Well, maybe allow to not be flagged for those not loving PvP but then reduce the rewards they get in the zone"?
What MMORPG producers think is a good idea often is seen as awful by the players.

Uhm... Were we reading the same article? You know, the one in which he said that there's been a great deal of debate on whether to include minimaps and auto-attack, but it goes against their design philosophy so they chose not to, but that they do read every suggestion and take it into consideration when making the game?

I personally enjoyed this interview a good deal, mostly because he seems so very frank. He doesn't come off as if he's some kind of guru who knows everything about the industry and that everything this game is doing is the right thing, he's just a guy who's trying to make this game as enjoyable for its players as he possibly can. He seems very straightforward with his answers, and personally, I'm pleased with the fact that they didn't give in to the pleading of the players and stuck to their guns insofar as the minimap is concerned.

I admit, at first, I was like, "Oh, shit, no minimap, this sucks." But the man is absolutely right. After a while, you get used to it. You gain your bearings, you start REALLY finding your way around and knowing the area intimately instead of simply relying on the minimap for all of your navigational needs, and it really does give you a chance to look at your surroundings and really experience the different zones rather than just navigate through them without a single glance around you.

I'm usually the first to denounce F2P games, especially ones with item shops, but I will be keeping a close eye on Allods.

Great interview, very insightful!

I am really happy to know that mounts are coming to the game! The run speed of this game is a bit slow. YAY MOUNTS!!!!!11!!!11!1!!
I think this is the ideal product to put in the item shop.

I liked how the guy was modest enough when making his critiques torwards other MMOs. I agree with his statement that many MMO developers don't know how to structure their game's begining, middle and end. That is very clear in at least 3 games that came out in the last year and a half: AoC (great initial experience with Tortage, afterwards the game was horrid), WAR (great initial experience and even mid level areas with a solid PvP design, the endgame is horrid) and Aion (very polished, great starter experience but horrific grind after that).
And it's very apparent in Allods that there's some face-lift of typical game features. The game isn't revolutionary but some concepts are slightly different giving the game a unique twist even if it is reminiscent of WoW.

As for the auto-attack: i can't say i miss it after the tutorial experience. Actually i feel myself moree involved in the gameplay by not having it. Afterwards you don't even notice the lack of it. It's also good because you have one less annoyance hindering your casting-time when you are PvPing.

A map overlay sounds like a great idea to me!! much better than a mini-map.

Because I have children, I know this for a fact: sometimes, what someone whines about is not necessarily what one really wants or needs.

The customer is not always right. I'd go so far as to say the customer is only right half the time. I like the idea of a game company sticking to some of their design philosophies despite copious amounts of player-base whingeing. Obviously that has to be done on a case-by-case basis, but a fair amount of guns-sticking shows vision and backbone.

After having played Allods for the last several days at first it was really jarring not to have the mini map but then I got really used to it and it only took me 3 days to go hell this great. It felt like...almost Everquest 1 without it and it was nice. When I felt lost or I wasn't sure where a quest was just a quick peek at the map got me going. I have to say I think sticking by their guns on no mini map & autoattack is great and if they go with an overlay thats even better.

You'd miss so many things about this game if you concentrated on the mini map. Hell there are markers that circle the borders of your screen to show you what directiong to go in for some NPC's and your party members so they have rather good alternatives to staring at a small portion of your screen.

Can't wait for Astral Ships that..will be awsome.

What amazed me with allods in cb3 was the amount of polish present, i went into the beta with reserve but what i found was a game that felt felt more polished than some of the games released during 2009 and yet they are still going for a cb4. This warms my heart to see a game developer take their launch so seriously that they dont mind spending the time to get it right.

A good and insightful read, keeps the newsflow ticking without overloading the excitement.

I got into CBT3 and really quite enjoyed it. Didn't strike me as a particularly "clunky" game and quite enjoyed the flow of bouncing around from A to B. Graphically very nice, guess we'll only get to know the "feel" of the game by playing it properly but I'm encouraged by what I've seen. So far, so good.

Would like to have a proper look at crafting and this whole endgame shebang, but that'll come in time; hopefully the journey to reach the level cap is just as fun as being there.

Jerry's Final Thought: The world would be a much better place with gibberlings.

A request for the next interview:

Currently Allods has all questing and hunting 20+ in PvP zones. Is this to test the PvP in closed Beta or will all 20+ zones be PvP zones at launch?

The thing is, if these were 'true' Closed Beta's, there'd be options to create L10, L20 & L30 characters right off the bat, for those wanting to test and critique higher level content.
There'd be tools ingame to submit bugs, and to solicit suggestions.
Etc etc.

A key phrase he used in his interview was:
"..Closed Beta 4. This is where we'll be *unlocking* the one thing that everyone has been waiting for.."

As I've mentioned before, I get the distinct feeling that very little development will occur between now and launch, and instead existing content will simply be unlocked, which makes me a sad panda.

Allods is so very close to being fantastic, it'd be a real shame for it not to take it all the way to the finish line by adding in the numerous little irks that are referred to by the current community.

Shawn - for example, are you able to ask him about the missing sound effects in your next part please, and whether or not they intend to fill in the gaps?

Actually, Allods is a bit different than most games concerning their closed beta here in the US.

Allods is a Russian game and is currently in OPEN Beta in Russia. As the developers are Russian themselves my guess is that most game-changing updates come from the Russian Open Beta testers since it's a little easier for them to interact with each other.

This US Closed beta is primarily to test the translations and make sure nothing gets broken as they transfer stuff over.

I am still reporting bugs to their bug email system (reported a broken quest last week) but I don't think we should expect much interaction from the developers.

While they haven't come out and said that they're doing it that way that is what I am assuming. It's fine with me.

I disagree that they are industry standard replies. He was pretty straight forward about making a group-centric game. Most people shy away from stating that these days. He also backed up the auto attack and minimap philosophies quite well. Most would hum and haw about it as to not scare away either side.

I liked his answers to the question about the biggest problems with MMO's. He and I are in complete agreement there.

Love this game so far,A couple Whines I have is that having to Reload your arrows as a scout Blows hard! Please,Please Improve Animations for the Xadagainians. I mean in melee they just stand straight up with no cool movement.

I am watching this game in horror and dread...because I know if it's successful, it may send every MMO down a spiralling pit of darkness where items are only gained from a swipe of a credit card. And MMORPG will stand for Massively Multiplayer Online Rich Peoples' Game. :(

Allod's is the first Free-2-Play I've ever enjoyed. The beta was truly impressive from a polish and game-play standpoint. I had to ask myself several times if I read things correctly and this was in fact free-to-play.

The initial start-up might be jarring for folks used to WoW and clones due to no auto-attack. However even as a melee that becomes a non-issue by level 4 or 6 and you never noticed it past level 10. The mini-map exclusion was a tad confusing at first but I slowly got back into my EQ groove of memorizing a zone and loved that I was watching my screen not a circle in the corner.

So far I’ve tried a few classes to level 10 (Summoner, Warrior, Paladin and Druid) and they area all very cool. I do not say that lightly, ever class is very different and has a place in a group. More so then most games you see come out today which are more solo-centric. What I also loved was the ability to take your class in remarkably different directions.

This level of customization isn’t limited to a specific tree so much as the talent grids allow you to branch out for some really unique builds: both hybrid and min/max. This is one of the first games where I see several end game specs and hybrids being viable for a number or roles.

I’ve had some real Everquest nostalgia with this game, in a good way! The death penalty is there but not overwhelming, more like a time-out. The stats are vitally important and learning which stats you need for what is enjoyable. The difficulty is also there, this isn’t the WoW push-over PvE that many have come to expect. (Yes I know about WoW raiding and my Shaman Kharzek has the gear to prove it.) The PvE is challenging and you can approach areas in different ways as to not die. The group/raid bosses as you progress are enjoyable as well and give you a reason to group for some solid upgrades.

I don’t have experience with the dungeons outside of Xaes and the Fortress place on the goodie side. They were both fun and had some neat quests to complete with variances outside of just “Kill X and Y”. I am looking forward to experiencing the PvP in CBT4 and will give a more in-depth review then.

Final Thought: If you go through the item shop there is nothing game-breaking on there. Everything I’ve seen thus far is to help you level or add bag-space and clothing options. All of the “best” gear comes from quests, reputations and dungeons/bosses which is as it should be. These guys have the right of things thus far and I look forward to playing come release.

It was quite an accident when I stumbled upon Allods. I had my doubts but after learning more about it, it seems quite interesting

Regarding the interview itself, I enjoyed it. He stood his ground about the auto attack and minimap, for me, auto attack aint much of a problem. I like the fact that I have cycle through spells to attack. I was spooked with the minimap though, but then he explained it quite well.

I can't wait to get into CBT4

and looking forward to the 2nd part!

The Interview hit right on the money for a lot of questions and concerns about the game. In My opinion, I think they have establish themselves as one of the best mmo's f2p games out there, and not only that but i dare say it has gotten in to the p2p territory rivaling every single one of those games. I sure that in the months to come all those p2p games will have a very real and cold chill down their spines.

The Allod's Online close beta 3 was the most fun i have had playing an mmo that i have had in years, and its not even released yet. You name it I have played it. Yeah i know i have no life. he he.

I agree with some of the post here saying that there are some bugs that need to be worked out for example the missing sounds, The latency between animation and the skills especially in melee combat. and the HP bar that delays in going down when taking alot of damage. But all of this things can and will be fixed. And are not major flaws in the game. As for the Auto attack and mini-map not being implemented it put me off for about 1 hour then i totally forgot they were missing.

Every class has unique skills and mechanics that are truly unique. Is not uncommon to see someone with your same class killing a mob in the time you have killed 3 it all comes down to player skill, and (i stress this strongly) attribute placement. I wont go in to much detail about every class but i will bring up my favorite which is the Psionicist a class that literally plays with your foes mind. I find this fascinating and cant wait to use it in PVP.

I recommend playing this game with an open mind and forget all you know about other mmo's and treat this game for what it is, Unique. I dare every single player from WoW to play this game so they can see what they are missing. I guarantee about 70% of you will love it. And the other 30%?.... Well i left WoW for a reason, they are that reason lol. I look forward to meeting and partying with all of you in All of you in Allod's Online.
