We recently had the opportunity to ask Cryptic's Jack Emmert a few questions regarding Star Trek Online and its PvP elements. With the looming open beta (tomorrow!) and similarly imminent February 2nd launch, we consider ourselves lucky to get some fairly definitive answers on topics like the game's Cryptic Store and the Klingon faction's future -- including if deeper customization is in the wings or not.
It's a quick read, but with less than 24 hours until open beta kick starts, that's probably a good thing. We wouldn't want to take away from anyone's Star Trek movie marathon, which is obviously what everyone is doing the day before, right? Khan!
Massively: How integral is PvP play to Star Trek Online as a whole?
Jack Emmert: All of our PvP is optional and consensual.
What challenges were created when looking to add meaningful PvP mechanics into the Star Trek universe?
I think it's pretty obvious that Klingon vs. Federation is a major focus. So we needed to address that first and foremost.
Will items sold via Cryptic Points ever affect PvP play or will this store be more reflective of Champions Online's?
Champions Online is the template for what we're doing.
What were the team's goals when creating the Klingon faction?
We wanted to create content that addressed our hypothetical Klingon player. We knew that we couldn't create a mirror image to the Federation content; we had to do something different. In our minds, the Klingon player is probably someone who likes their aggressive nature, and thus PvP is the perfect fit for content.
What's in store for Klingons after Star Trek Online launches in February?
We're deciding that now! The easiest solution is to create content similar to the Federation, but I'd really like to make Klingon gameplay distinct.
Are you planning to expand upon Klingon ship customization options and if so, what additions will be made?
Yep. We'll expand it. Probably similar to what we did for Federation. But I think more content takes priority.
Will future player factions follow the Klingon's PvP focused play style or is something else in store for players?
We'll decide on a faction by faction basis.
Warzones appear to be Star Trek Online's version of an open PvP system, would you say that's true? Also, how will they operate and be incorporated into the game?
Players race against each other like they do in a regular Fleet Action to get top score, but can also PvP other players in the process. When the objectives are all completed the map goes into a cool down period and resets. There is no queuing for these maps.
There are missions on the Klingon and Federation side that point players to these Warzones.
Thanks, Jack!

What's not to understand. There was a patch the yesterday and instead of patching from that, they want to patch from, what it was before that. Looks like they are doing their best to avoid as many patching woes as possible.

What's up dude, are you confused by the CB>OB update proceedure? Simplest answer is to just hit your STO shortcut and the launcher will do all the patching for you - it's a 1,346mb update. Get going now and you should be fine by tomorrow evening (EU)/morning (US) for the start of OB. :)
Anyway, CB was awesome. All the Cryptic haters and Cash-Shop Righteous Indignation Assholes can go and screw themselves quietly in the corner; STO's going to be good, and it's going to be big.

Like I said, I enjoyed it. I pre-ordered it, I'm going to play it. Yes, I played CO, no I did not like that. This is a different beast.
If one does not like the cash shop feel free not to use it. If one does not like the game or it's concept, it doesn't really affect me one way or the other.
CB was good. OB will be a mess with thousands of new people jamming themselves into it at the start. So will retail. But it will even out and I will still have fun. Isn't that all that matters really?

tbh, you could make any game imaginable - even one that, miraculously, everybody everywhere agreed was going to be the best game ever (maybe a Jesus Simulator or a Virtual Porn World) - and as soon as you say the magic words 'Cash Shop' or 'Item Mall', you'd get a wave of righteous indignation and spurious pseudo-logical pedantry rolling over you like a tsunami. The sound of thousands of knees jerking spontaneously up against the underside of thousands of desks would be a deafening roar. Then of course, a few of these same angry clowns would say 'meh', just so they didn't look totally stupid.

In today's MMO and PC computing game market - your game needs to be nothing short of "cutting edge" and astonishingly good when 1st released - if you even want a decent chance at success. DA:O is a good example of what I mean.
OTW, you'll get a marginal spike in your profit on the game in the first month or two depending on hype and name recognition - and then it's a downhill slide from
their, can be quite rapid depending on how badly off-mark your game is to quality.
One reason why today's game market is so harsh is because the economy is so
bad - US alone has 17% unemployment if you count those who have given up
looking for work. There are a record number of Americans - 37 million on foodstamps, and many Americans in record numbers are fearful of losing their jobs.
MMOs have also become a competitive market.
I have not played the beta for STO, and I'll be sorry not only for all the developers who spent a year and a half of their time on this project along with the rest of the workers in Cryptic - if STO does fail, so I hope I am pleasantly surprised with the opposite.
But frankly, with this much bad press before Beta, a combat system that looks clearly arcade like, and the only well developed race to play = Federation, and a game based off the Champions line - well, I wouldn't be placing very high odds in Vegas right now on this game. :(

I can't help but wonder what you would buy in a Jesus Simulator cash shop :)

Anyone knows why fileplanet suprisingly requires paid subscription to start STO open beta client download now?

That's the thing to do now. I kept a subscrption with them a long time ago mostly back then it was for convenience and I liked using them to get into betas. I don't know if it is possible to get into open beta without a service like theres or winning a contest.
