We recently had the opportunity to ask Cryptic's Jack Emmert a few questions regarding Star Trek Online and its PvP elements. With the looming open beta (tomorrow!) and similarly imminent February 2nd launch, we consider ourselves lucky to get some fairly definitive answers on topics like the game's Cryptic Store and the Klingon faction's future -- including if deeper customization is in the wings or not.
It's a quick read, but with less than 24 hours until open beta kick starts, that's probably a good thing. We wouldn't want to take away from anyone's Star Trek movie marathon, which is obviously what everyone is doing the day before, right? Khan!
Massively: How integral is PvP play to Star Trek Online as a whole?
Jack Emmert: All of our PvP is optional and consensual.
What challenges were created when looking to add meaningful PvP mechanics into the Star Trek universe?
I think it's pretty obvious that Klingon vs. Federation is a major focus. So we needed to address that first and foremost.
Will items sold via Cryptic Points ever affect PvP play or will this store be more reflective of Champions Online's?
Champions Online is the template for what we're doing.
What were the team's goals when creating the Klingon faction?
We wanted to create content that addressed our hypothetical Klingon player. We knew that we couldn't create a mirror image to the Federation content; we had to do something different. In our minds, the Klingon player is probably someone who likes their aggressive nature, and thus PvP is the perfect fit for content.
What's in store for Klingons after Star Trek Online launches in February?
We're deciding that now! The easiest solution is to create content similar to the Federation, but I'd really like to make Klingon gameplay distinct.
Are you planning to expand upon Klingon ship customization options and if so, what additions will be made?
Yep. We'll expand it. Probably similar to what we did for Federation. But I think more content takes priority.
Will future player factions follow the Klingon's PvP focused play style or is something else in store for players?
We'll decide on a faction by faction basis.
Warzones appear to be Star Trek Online's version of an open PvP system, would you say that's true? Also, how will they operate and be incorporated into the game?
Players race against each other like they do in a regular Fleet Action to get top score, but can also PvP other players in the process. When the objectives are all completed the map goes into a cool down period and resets. There is no queuing for these maps.
There are missions on the Klingon and Federation side that point players to these Warzones.
Thanks, Jack!

Well it did say it was a quick interview.
Surely people can not expect any real answers from Cryptic about STO can they?
Maybe tomorrow we will get a new video showing the same stuff in a differen't order.

I didn't realize they are going to cash shop this game, that's a -1 for me. I prefer to pay my sub and for those assets to be supplied in updates, not pay to play then pay again.
I really dislike quotes like this :
We knew that we couldn't create a mirror image to the Federation content; we had to do something different.
What he really means is that they didn't do Klingon's as a full playable race with PvE content, because they didn't have the time, but they want to dangle the carrot out there that this might change, no promises mind!
Tomorrow I guess it all comes out, just a warning, get the tin foil hats ready, this game is a bit of a let down!

Well, its Cryptic, they're known for having cash shops in their damn games which I hate generally hate Cryptic, so it shouldn't be surprising STO will have it as well... (but I am against cash shops). I like Star Trek, and I just hope STO won't be a big disappointment or Cryptic is in a whole lot of trouble.

Let's be honest, Klingon gameplay is "distinct" is a big time cope out. They did not have time to actually make content for Klingons so they are now calling them "aggressive" so more PvP oriented gameplay.
I don't care if you hate STO or are a STO fanboy, it would have been a better choice to have more PvE content for the Klingons.
The biggest problem Crytic will encounter is Klingon players complaining and the lack of population in the Klingon side.

Has anyone got the link to start the download for the open beta?
I'd like to get it going prior to beta launch.

Is this going to be a real open beta where anyone can sign up for it or just for the people who pre-ordered it?

I dont like the idea of cash for gear in games, however... I'll be honest, if STO is good enough to get me away from WoW, I'd happily pay 50 bucks a month and probably send them a thank you card for hurting my rear.
I'm not looking for the wowkiller (tm) here, I'm just looking for something "I" think is as good. - Cap Ships and Consensual pvp FTW.
I followed STO and bought her dinner, now it's time for her to put out. Thats all I'm saying.

well u most have uninstalled the beta and not played the game, cause if you were in the Closed Beta you wouldnt be able to tell us without breaking the NDA. So you are dumb for uninstalling with out playing the game... and for all of you worried about micro transactions, dont worry if it is like CO the stuff you get doesnt really effect game play!

I don't know why ppl make such a big deal about these cash shops. They may be a big deal in some other games, but it hardly amounted to anything in Champions Online, which he said is the template.
For the uninformed, the only thing that got sold in the shop in CO was a couple of those miniature figures that ran along side you, some of which I'm sure you could get in game or through one of the events they ran. They were useless and it and had no effect on the game whatsoever.
Also you have the ability to buy a retcon, which essentially took your character back to 0 skills and let you select them again for free. For the most part they tossed those out like candy after the game started. Not to mention they also hand them out whenever they do a major update, just like any other game. You also have the ability to do it yourself in game, but just like any other game you have to pay for it out of pocket. They even went through and made it cheaper to do to make ppl happy.
Then they let you pay for more costume slots if you wanted because I guess 4 isn't enough.
And they let you pay to have additional characters. I guess 8 isn't enough.
And then they have those other costume pieces that you can buy if you want to be fancier than you already are with the multitude of options you have for free.
Though I don't have a list in front of me, I would bet the cash shop is going to be silly stuff along the same lines: character resets, extra uniform options, maybe more paint schemes for ships. Nothing that is important or game altering. As much complaining as there is about this cash shop, they are so easy to avoid and ignore.

@JP
you crazy
It's much more likely that Mr Emeret STILL feels that way about Microtransactions. Unfortunately, if he wants to keep his job he has to play along with whatever the rest of the company decides is financially prudent.
The best way to take away micro transactions is to NOT PAY FOR THEM. That's it. I'm sorry, but as long as people enjoy the idea of paying for special items, they'll do it. And the business, rather than ethical, minded will take full advantage of that fact.
