One of the names we keep hearing in terms of community buzz amongst the free-to-play titles heading for the market is Allods Online. People are comparing it to World of Warcraft, and with screenshots like the one above, we can understand why. The art, while not exact, is certainly very similar. The developers of Allods Online, Astrum Nival, have apparently taken the "if you can't beat them, join them" approach. We'll have to wait and see if it works. For now, we have this screenshot to enjoy, along with a note sent in to us from Pedro R. who writes in: [This is a] view of the main plaza from the League capital city. This game really has amazing graphics and [a] great storyline.
Are you really enjoying a new title, particularly one we perhaps haven't had a chance to see as yet? Why not take a screenshot of something interesting and send it in to us? You can reach us at oneshots AT massively DOT com -- and be sure to send along your name, the name of the game, and a quick description. We'll post it out here and give you the credit!

You know, I played the beta and thought it was pretty decent for a free MMO! Only problem I have is that it just feels like I'm retredding old ground. I mean to be perfectly honest, I haven't played WoW since 2007. So when I got into Allod's in 2009 I felt like revisiting WoW with just a lot of updates.
I mean I respect Allod's for what it is..but it's really hard to play something new when it looks like the most popular MMORPG that has ever existed. But hey, Let's be honest, it's an easy art style to replicate since the structure is so basic. Makes it easy to run and maintain.
If you loved WoW, but tire of paying subs, I guess Allod's would be the perfect game to switch to. Maybe that's what Gala is going for.

Aye, it's tough to look past the visual similarities (and class systems, quest systems, etc.) but there ARE a few differences that give Allods just enough to perhaps keep even the most WoW-weary of players going.
As a face-to-face melee fan the combat system is a lot more fun. It requires a bit more attention and timing than the fire-and-forget auto-attack of WoW combat.
The endgame has some unique features (that we haven't seen yet I need to add) which look very interesting. The ship warfare with multiple players needed to run a ship is something I haven't seen since Tribes.
And although I am usually a non-reading quest-grabber I have gotten caught up in a few quests that were very clever and well-written.
And I should also add that each game feature (even the less-than-original ones) have been tweaked to make them a bit different. Whether it's the Gathering tradeskills or the death penalties they've done a bit of work here more than just copy-and-pasting WoW features.

You were saying?

For what it's worth, both work, but I was referring to the building as a center of power, not the locale.

I gave the game a try yesterday. From the very beginning the game-play was very fluid and captivating. I only played until the end of the tutorial, reached the first camp, and enjoyed it quite a bit.
For a FTP title it is very good. Either than that I can't say much. I will play it a bit more and see how it goes.

It's a nice game with decent production values. But for me, this felt "lifeless, nd I got bored with it very easily. Combat is too slow for my liking, Quest instructions can be so vague I feel like pulling my eyes out with a spoon.
For a Free-to-play game it's got potential, but I'm very fussy with which MMO's I play, this won't be one of them.

I'm surprised that developers haven't yet cottoned on to the fact that if people want to play a game like WoW, they'll play WoW.
I've played WoW on and off, it's an ok game but nothing special. Whenever my interest is aroused by comments about a new game I check it out, only to find that the screenshots are so reminiscent of WoW that I immediately lose all interest. I don't need another WoW, I've got one already.
How difficult is it for developers to think of a different style of MMO from WoW and look to corner a different section of the market than Blizzard, or do they really think that by launching a pale imitation of WoW (and all the copies are but a pale imitation) they're suddenly going to have millions of customers? It hasn't happened so far, and it isn't going to.

I suspect they're aiming for the folks who would be playing WoW but can't or won't pony up for the subscription costs. That's just my guess, though.

There's also a market for WoW-ish games that cater to specific features.
For instance, currently PvP is pretty hardcore at levels 20+ in Allods. I'm not sure if that is the way it will go to market but basically at levels 20+ there are only PvP zones to level up in. You step in and you're flagged.
I'm not there yet so I can't say how frustrating it is but if it stays this way then likely it is a bit too "hardcore" a game for a casual player like myself.

Not to mention that Allods endgame will have a completely different dimension with the presence of ship vs ship PvP. Basically this will work as faction PvP between manned ships of 6 to 30 people and that people need to build and maintain.
You will also need the ships to access some content.
There's also a type of sport PvP called goblinball and the game has enough differences to make it different from WoW. And it is actually based on a pre-existing IP known in thee western market as the Rage of Mages.
Another difference torwards WoW is that it allows for much more character costumization in terms of spec and stats, doesn't has auto-attack, and it actually greatly matters where you spend your talent points and stat points. You can get a totally gimped character if you are not careful where you place your points.

Nice vid double9s.
Sorry to use it in a negative example, but it highlights one of my pet gripes about Allods - notice the dynamic, hustle-bustle soundscape?
No, nor do I. There's isn't one :S
This is part of a larger issue in my opinion, in that there have been no changes (patches) in the most recent two CB's outside of a two-line update, and I'm getting the feeling that they're going down the same path as RoM and most every other F2P title with a limited budget.
'Closed Beta' is turning out to be nothing more than a marketing exercise, with none of the pages and pages of suggestions from players being paid any heed.
I'd love to be proven wrong of course, but I'm not holding out much hope.
