i would like o see a gridwide heatmap, if you can make it into little animated loops like those weather images of storms moving it would be awesome :D

statisticly SL does have lots of desert areas at any given time, but what should matter if how people that are online are spending their time, and not all the the stuff that isn't being used.

oh, btw, could you also make a "heatmap" of landscaping? (sim areas that change more often on the daily updated map images would be "hotter")

When I login to SecondLife (Australian time, non-peak), there are at
least 25 people online in MY contacts list alone. However SL is not a
game, an entertainment service or a magic wand to fix failed
businesses or personal problems.

Just like other hosted platforms (eg. Wordpress.com) it provides a
toolset only, no service to help you hurdle barriers to entry (eg. the
awful "Orientation Island").

There is a huge expectation gap between what people believe Second Life is (MMORPG, physically bustling social environment, business model in a box, dating service, anonymous porn site), and what the platform actually provides (tools). SL is like every other tool (internet or open source). Just because someone builds it (cat photo webpage), does not mean anyone will come or CARE about what you've built, nor does this mean someone will pay for it or use or acknowledge it.

If you require some kind of service, expecting a tool to
meet your service needs by itself will result only in disappointment.

That said, this is Linden Lab's problem as no one understands
their product (marketing is erratic and confusing) and most choose to purchase Products and Services from other than Linden Labs if they can. They have no "recommended service providers" but provide no services of their own, there's a lot of selling products, but it's not the same as a service.

I spend real money in SL, just as I do for other tools on the
Internet, hosted or client-side app.

I have one very large plot of land with a visited public
space and a smaller "residential" plot also (large by
residential standards). I have a free account, pay no money directly
to Linden Labs. I pay other service providers like my landlord,
clothing outlets, builders who create vehicles and objects I like.

This is a standard online business model failure. SL has overheads it must pay to provide a hosted platform, I use the service and don't pay LL.
Therefore, LL relies on skimming some of my spent money from service
providers.

Dependency like this means bad services of failed businesses result in less/no money for LL, while expenses continue to be steady.

Just a quick example of my shut-in life as a full time second lifer this week:

Monday, hopped into SL, hung out and talked with some close friends.

Tuesday, I was on a panel discussion with some of the most brilliant minds in the world, discussing the movie "Avatar" (50+ attendees + video taped recording)

Wednesday, I did some social media proactive work involving making a difference for the world. Posted some articles regarding capitalism, as well as health care reform.

Thursday, I traveled to New York City to work in a Veterinary Hospital in Manhattan. Thursday night I went to see a one-man show called "Do Not Go Gentle" which was about Dylan Thomas. It was brilliant.

Friday, I worked at the cat hospital again. Afterwards I hit a diner on 42nd street with some friends.

Saturday, After I worked more at the cat hospital, I traveled to south jersey, which is where I sit now as I'm typing. I'm responding to this blog post. Posting on my own blog, which is called "Second Life, The Music, The DJs, The Nightlife, The Art, and The Creativity. http://djdoubledown.blogspot.com
I also bought a cell phone. And during all of this, I handled some business in Second Life, while my avatar was relaxing on a packed club and a live DJ was performing.

..... so.... that's just an example... that was this past week for me... as a full time Second Life resident.

Shut in.. my ass!

By the way, this is the last time I will probably ever respond to a blog post about stats or mis-accuracies from the outside observers of Second Life. SL is a half decade old... people use it, people live it, people work it... by now, if you're still questioning what's happening inside second life, and can't figure it out, then get a friggin life.
