SWG's doing very well, in fact -- it's come a very long way since the NGE, and the devs of the last few years have really re-created a very nice sandbox MMO. It's irksome that the NGE albatross continues to follow the game around long beyond its due, but I guess Sony earned it. But that isn't the state of the game today.

I'm not into PvP, but I'm really glad the PvPers are getting this update, it's been a long time coming!

The game is far from doing very well. It has been on life support for years now. SOE just refuses to pull the plug but TOR will put SWG out of it's misery. Has the game reverted back to 32 classes? Has the combat system changed back to the launch style? Is Jedi still a starter class? Sounds like it's still NGE SWG to me.

I wouldn't call shutting down half the servers "doing very well". As it is, of the remaining servers only 3-4 have any population worth talking about, most servers can't find decent PvP or fill a 8 person instance group during prime time. And on the big servers the lag is so bad from outdated hardware and shotty code that PvP with anything more then 20 people is a slideshow (sever side lag)

The professions are bland and boring. The only people still playing are hardcore SW fans and people who love the sandbox elements that remain.

That being said, for people who like player housing, in depth crafting and a open world feeling, SWG is still the best game out there, but the PvE, PvP and professions are totally inferior to preNGE days.

So just because you can still play a Jedi, years and years of patches and updates, and overhauls don't matter? *rollseyes* Life support is like maintenance mode -- when a game is hardly getting any new content (like Guild Wars) it's pretty obvious. But SWG is getting loads of content. In the past few years we've seen beastmastery, a chef revamp, droid engineering overhauls, new tailoring palettes, new furniture palettes, new armorsmithing schems, multiple new instances, new legacy questline content, a return of ranger stuff like camps and milking, entertainer overhauls, player city boons, and at least one major update to every combat class (sometimes more). Sony also listened to pleas to effectively merge the servers, so the big servers have more people playing than launch year. I mean really you have to be just not paying attention to think the game is on life support, especially when there are rumors of an expansion floating about in connection with the "big news for 2010" the the devs keep hinting at.

Jedi are stupid, and sure I'd prefer skill trees to classes, but my entire point, which went ignored, is that the game has moved on -- way on -- past those mistakes, and is really a much better game than the first year, due to all of the content updates. There will always be people who will never forgive NGE and consequently they are blind to everything since. I quit because of the NGE too, but giving it a second chance a couple years after that was one of the best gaming decisions I've made. There simply isn't a better sandbox persistent world out there.

@THACO -- I dunno about you but if I jack up all my settings and make sure to use external tools to boost anti-aliasing and various other visual effects, I can get SWG to look really nice. It doesn't really hold up to Aion, but it makes most other games of the last few years look like crap.

Me's response is spot on. Group intensive updates only make the poor population issues and crippling server lag more obvious. This update, as with those before it, will certainly introduce more bugs and/or exploits that NEVER get fixed. By the way, the link in the article is to a two month old thread that is more specualtion and unconfirmed 'facts'.

This game lost well over 80% of its population following the very unwanted NGE revamp in November 2005 and never recovered. No matter what content and shinies are bolted on to this NGE version of SWG, the game remains terrible.

Good games do not close half their servers. Good games do not allow more than half their remaining servers to be population starved and do nothing about it. Good games do not have $OE in charge.

SWG needs a Graphics Overhaul sometime not for before or after TOR or it will be doomed. SAW was the our last best hope for a real sandbox MMO.

Didn't they already overhaul this system pretty recently? I seem to remember a year ago a lot of people being upset that they were losing their Ranks they earned in the original system.

That "enormous list of new mechanics" has been in the game for at least two years if not longer. Please do a little bit of research before you write an article. I expect more from Massively.

haha.... you are joking right, did you read the article that followed this one on what it's like to work for Massively??

I expect more from the contributors at Massively, so stop being quite such a massively baby and just get over it.

'I expect more of Massively', how much did it cost you recently, what exactly are Massively supposed to supply free of charge to meet your exacting quality standards?

How do you think we need to punish article writers who make mistakes, do you think they should be dismissed immediately, sounds only reasonable, right?

I get that as a video game writer, the people who work for Massively are extremely busy. But that was a glaring error in the article. Now note what I'm about to say is an example: What Mr. Horner did with that particular link was talk about WotLK and then link us to a Blizzard page on BC. Obviously SWG isn't as big as WoW so I can understand why it may not be as obvious. But he still sent us to a SWG page that was years old news. A bit more time researching would have prevented that.

And yeah I DO expect more from Massively. They are THE place I go to for general MMO news, so yeah, I want them to be as accurate as possible. I wonder what other patently false information I've been given from this site because a writer didn't take the time to finish their research.

To Mr. Horner if you read this, this wasn't meant as a personal jab. It's just frustrating to see wrong information about a game that I love, and has many misconceptions surrounding it already. I hope you did not take offense.

I thought the GCW update consisted of battles outside and inside the player cities that would generate NPC AT AT walkers and AT-ST walkers? Is this a revamp of the existing rank system for the GCW PVP ranking system?

The only way SWG will get me back before TOR, is:

A. upgrade the game engine so you can't run up the side of a cliff and can actually jump over stuff.

B. spend more time updating the space game content.

I tried this DX 10 mod with SWG which made space look beautiful when I came back to check out the game last month. It is quite an achievement for public gamers to do what SOE won't.

Massively...

Poor, poor massively. You join the side of the conspirators of the "I hate SWG" club.

You linked in some years old info.

Here is the actual GCW update.
