May those people have a good time in a Cryptic game, in a year.

Has Cryptic released pricing plans for STO? Or any mention of maybe a lifetime or six month sub discount?

Nothing on 6 month/lifetime subs that I've seen. I'm still idly hoping, even if not entirely sure I actually want the game, possibly because I'm hoping they'll do a cut-price lifetime for CO lifetimers....

I really wanted to buy this game, but with so much negative talk across the Massively commenters I don't feel I can spend the money this game. Thanks Massively commenters for tossing a kink in my thought making process.

If you listen to the posters here. you'll never buy anything. In case you haven't noticed, the majority of posters here are negative about everything.

I understand, but I'd much rather be (mis)informed by folks here than mmorpg.com or some other site. I tend to find I agree with the folks here more often than not.

If you have misgivings wait until there's a demo or free trial. I have to agree though don't just go on what people say here or anywhere else because the majority base their opinion on things that don't make the game unique.

There could be something about this game that you would like if you had the chance to see for yourself. :) This goes for any game.

The reason I've been giving it so much thought is because after 5+ years of WoW and bouncing from game to game I'm really looking for something to grab my attention and get me addicted.

I really enjoy Star Trek and all, but seems like most games based on the IP don't always live up to the quality I expect.

@Dave:
Have you played Star Trek Elite Force II?
Sightly dated now of course, although the graphics are still impressive considering it's age. Great fun (with a nice storyline and lots of original STNG voice actors) if you're a ST fan.

One thing to keep in mind, a lot of the people who are posting their disappointed comments, a lot of them purchased Six Month and even Lifetime Subscriptions to Champions Online to get access to STO. So a lot of the people who are "bashing" the game are people who payed hard earned money and WANTED to love STO, only to have it greatly disappoint them in a very short period of time.

Sure nobody twisted any of our arms to purchase the closed beta access, but I think it speaks loudly how bad the game is, when people get bored of it after being only allowed to "play" for 2-4 hours each 7-10 days.

"Seeing as STO is still in lolclosedbeta, and it's about 65% against and 35% in favor of the game (IN MY OPINION) on most sites I've been to, it gives a pretty accurate idea of how popular the game will be"

This is completely incorrect imo. Someone who hated the game while being a closed beta tester has no reason not break NDA. The guy who is loving every painful bug-crunching minute testing it will never break NDA for fear of being booted. Add on that that people who post of boards account for a small fraction of those who play (if they didn't there would be hundreds of thousands of posts on this blog every day) and basing your view of a game on what you read here is f'ing crazy. But hey, it's a free country and there is no pressing reason to play any computer games at all.

As a for instance, according to the conventional wisdom here, AOC, WAR, CO, every expansion to LOTRO etc. have all be astounding failures and not worth the time to download for free. Having played all of them the conventional wisdom is neither conventional or wise.

I'm not going to base if I'll buy or not buy the game on what is said on any website, but what I will do is base if I'll buy a game right now or wait a month or two to buy a game. I bought Vanguard when it was released and that didn't go well for me, same with Warhammer when I should have waited a month or two for everything to pan out. I had two friends pre-order Champions Online and they tried to get me to do it as well, I politely refused because of what I heard on the boards and what my personal experiences were previously.

I agree to base an opinion solely on what people say on the internet is ridiculous, but sometimes by reading you are able to form a very good picture of what games may be like (type of combat system, UI, etc). That is primarily what I'm reading about on boards, blogs, etc. I hardly pay much attention to the bugs people see or the minor things that people get bent out of shape about, the things that effect the gameplay out of the box is all I care about and if people aren't happy with that then I feel alright saving $50-60 for another month and wait for multiple reviews to pop up.

As for STO, I'm more than happy to wait a month or two after release. I've no ambition to be the first person to accomplish anything in a game and with few people from my personal MMO support group picking it up (I'd be playing alone and I love having co-workers play so we have something to do at work) I don't think I'll be buying it right away. Now, that could all change but at this point there isn't anything about this game I can't wait to experience.

Hell of a rambling at 4am, but that's what happens when work calls just to see if you'll get out of bed to fix a problem. Sorry if anything above is incoherent.

Um...to be fair, there are many who are interested in this game who had never experienced Cryptic's products yet (or quite likely even MMO's), such as Star Trek fans. So this shouldn't be surprsing. I just hope they don't become too dissapointed of the game because of their blissful ignorance.

Be glad that all the negative comments at least gave you pause and made you think about whether or not you should spend(read:waste) $50 just to try it out. After launch day you should be able to get a feel for if you should get it just yet.

The only game I plan on taking a chance on launch day is SW:KoTOR. Everything else is going to have to get me into a beta first.

I'm in the closed beta and I will be skipping STO. Bland, boring design, grindy, instanced everything, uninspired sector space areas, repetitive ground and spaceship environments, et cetera.

Show me a MMO that isn't "Grindy" and without any kind of "repetitive environments" because I sure haven't found one. Instanced I'll give you, though it depends how is implemented.

I'm going to judge STO on MY OWN experience with the Open Beta not on forum comments. Yes, there are valid concerns about STO and not everyone is going to like the design (Instances, etc)

Seare, that's such a joke. This game is apparently supposed to be released in less then a month. Closed beta should be starting very soon which will drop the NDA. Unless they have some magic tricks that will solve this games countless problems, as soon as the NDA is dropped you'll be hearing the same thing. Only in more detail.

I feel so bad for any Star Trek fans who are buying this game under the premise it's Star Trek in space and not geneic sci fi cryptic MMO in space

While I don't think negative comments about previous experiences in the STO Beta should be dismissed out right, people should also know that they dropped a 2+GB patch last night and the game is now different.

Instead of listening to other's comments, positive or negative, wait for a free trial and make your own informed decision.
