We've recently received a tip-off to a lack of communication from the developers of the social steampunk MMO, Gatheryn, in recent months, signaling what could be the collapse of the game.
The website is still up and running, but the closed beta signup page has vanished, the download game link is broken, and the game's servers are down for the count. Players are asking for assistance or information on what's going on with the game on the beta forums, but things are very, very silent.
The current forum rumor (must have forum access to read link) is that Mindfuse Games has run out of funding and is shutting down the game, but that rumor has been posted by a forum account that only has one post and does not possess a developer tag, making the rumor extremely unverified.
We have contacted Mindfuse Games for comment, but have yet to receive a response.
[Thanks for the tip, Torsten!]

Oh no! Let's hope they pull through, best of wishes to them.

As a Beta-tester I'm not sad to see it go. At all.

This, so much. Graphics don't usually matter very much to me, but a new MMO needs to have graphics at least on par with Everquest. Gatheryn's graphics are sub-UO level, IMO.

I mean the graphics were bad. VERY BAD.
But the gameplay, design, and complete lack of content made me feel like it was "Loading Screen: the Game!" And if you'd ever tested Gatheryn you know what I mean.

Extremely good question. A few months back when the beta was still downloadable I snagged it but when I tried to sign into the game this registration screen kept popping up no matter how many times I registered. I think this was a few weeks after the forum went dark. It's probably dead and that's a shame because 1.) I was looking forward to trying it out and 2.) there are a serious lack of steam punk games.
After the genre gets of its space, then post-apoc phases I hope they give steam punk a better shot.

I couldn't get over how awful the avatars were. In a social game like that where you're basically wandering around looking at stuff and playing minigames, the environment has to be a huge part of the draw. If the environment and avatars aren't even close to appealing, then you might as well be playing Bejeweled on a website.
It's a real shame, but craftsmanship is one of the core tenets of Steampunk. You can't just throw a cog on something and call it steampunk. :P It has to be well-made. Ah well. Here's hoping someone else picks up the torch and does it right.

As much as I'd like to support Indie developers, i just don't see this game flying.
For the sounds of things, they arn't really doing anything new, the steampunk setting is present in previous MMOs one way or another, and if they are targeting players that like crafting, they have a very big competition to go against.

Yeah, same here. The steering alone was annoying because it wasn't possible to invert the vertical mouselook setting.
And for the steampunk elements... there's much more to see and do in a far better virtual steam city if you just download Second Life and type "New Babbage" into the search system.

Very disappointing.
The fact that the company can't even reassure their loyal players and fans speaks volumes for the quality of service they would have presented had this game not fallen through.
It takes all of seconds to communicate with the forum goers and Mindfuse obviously can't even be bothered.
As for alternatives:
Neo Steam, is a free to play mmo with a steampunk/anime theme by Atlus.
Clockwork Symphony, is a steampunk mmorpg in development right now. Beta is expected in two years or so.
