Mythic Entertainment today announced that GOA's license to publish and maintain Dark Age of Camelot in Europe will not be renewed, and that Mythic plans to take hold of the reins for European support. The news post says the transition will occur "in the coming weeks" which hopefully means a gradual shift is being planned, rather than a sudden one.
The developer makes sure to assuage any fears of rocky times ahead by saying, "We are currently working with GOA to take over operation of the game and its European community, and will soon be providing details about pressing player questions such as existing subscriptions, character transfers, game versions, localization, and more." It sounds like everything is well under control, but an effort like this is most certainly a delicate one. Hopefully things go smoothly, as we'd rather report good news over bad.

This is the sort of thing a company does when they're going to close down a service within 12 months.

Actually, no. GOAs licence is expiring and Mythic decided they will be taking over (as they finally can with EA). The only reason GOA was publishing the game in Europe was because Mythic didn't have the resources before for the job, but now with EA it's possible. Also this is a good thing, as GOAs reputation isn't the best among some players and players have been asking for this for a long time.
Like Bobby said, hopefully warhammer next..

I feel like I really missed out on DAOC. I was raiding EQ nightly while that game was getting huge.
Anyone know how big the server populations are these days?

Check the 'state of the realm' to see that they've clustered their servers, and its not unusual for the one populated world to have close to or over 3000 people. If you like PvP, however, you'll be competing with around 50 people at most unless there's no other available servers (yes, their servers still crash after all these years).

The english EU-servers are pretty dead but I hear there are some germans still playing
The US-Servers are pretty good atm thanks to the new cluster they stated last year.
I will absolutely transfer my EU-account to a US-server if it's not to expensive (hopefully free)

Yeah, hopefully WAR - EU is next, so we can finally get the full features + some competent support.

I've always wanted to give this game a try, think now might be a good time. To be honest, these older games are way better than anything that has been released in the last few years.

THANK GOD! Finally.
I stopped playing WAR because GOA were absolutely useless at any form of Tech Support.
Their EU Website is atrocious to use, as is their account management.
You get none of the main Mythic bonuses, and to be frank, it made the whol social aspect to the game unplayable.
Add to that, they are totally inept at working with ISP to sort out lag issues caused by the traffic type. Their knowledge of how internet traffic works, and how shaping affects it is woeful.
This can only be a good thing.
I may even go back to the WAR!
