The launch of Cryptic's Star Trek Online is less than a month away, and player feelings are mixed. Whether you can't wait for launch, or are apprehensive that Cryptic is rolling it out so quickly, it's safe to say that people are very interested to see how it turns out.
To help alleviate the wait, Cryptic has released a brand new trailer entitled Exploration. It's a great look at...well, exploration in Star Trek Online, both on the ground and in space. There are some great looking landscapes -- both familiar and unfamiliar -- and a look at several different races throughout the trailer. As a little bonus, we get a peek at some battle scenes and weaponry, which seems to consist heavily of various types of phaser fire exchange. No actual hand-to-hand is seen, but Cryptic has assured us it exists, so we'll keep our fingers crossed.
For now, follow along after the jump and enjoy the trailer.

Hmm, that video is a few months old. Either way, thanks for posting it. It helped make up my mind to go pre-order.
I'm soooo sick of Fantasy / Holy Trinity MMO's that the video of seeing actual combat footage got me excited again about STO.
I'll give it a whirl :)

I have to admit that I was not too impressed by that video, thanks for the link though, it's nice to see a gameplay vid' beyond the 'fly-by' norm.

There is better, more recent, leaked footage here:

I think it looks pretty good, actually.

Yeah that video is pretty recent. Looks like the guy has a lot of vids uploaded showing ground and space. Space wins out with me, but then it always did.
I'm amazed no one has had it taken down. I'm a little torn about what to say or do about it though. Part of me says I should mention it to the devs. Another part says it's probably already been mentioned. Another part wants to just counteract some of the bad press, especially this stupid exploration video.
Khaaaan!

Oops. I didn't mean this one. I don't know why there was Mass Effect stuff showing. I meant the vids from Malka

Easy to make such speedy launches, when the game is so obviously similar to the ones you launched a month ago.

Still not helping me get off the fence.
I want it to succeed but it has too much going against it, such as, Cryptic, fast release, Cryptic, graphics make it look unpolished, Cryptic, etc..

Seriously? If you stripped the video of the slower-paced music and 'Exploration' title, this would be any other video they've released to date. Fly-bys and beauty shots exploration does not make. Interaction with plant life? Coming across a big glowing alien doohickey? At least that has some semblance of discovery.
I got excited for a second there thinking there'd be an SW:TOR-style dev commentary about what they'll be doing for exploration; at least there's actual -information- in those. They're less than a month from launch and we still have no clue what they're doing for non-combat content. Combat that, which from the hands-on gameplay I had at PAX, is pretty much CO:Remapped pew-pew...and half as exciting.

Yeah, These guys can't fool me anymore. I've learned to much from 2009 when it comes to MMOs and the companies behind them.
Why would anyone trust a company with a new MMORPG thats only released a few months after their previous one that was pretty mediocre?
Maybe if this came out in 2011 I'd try it out, but only a few months after Champions? Yeah, forget that.
Besides..Shouldn't a Star Trek MMO be less combat driven?

Isn't a less combat-driven mmo called second life?

You are partially correct, drjones...
Yes, if you're looking at SL as a non-combat MMO.
No, if you're looking for an exploration MMO, which SL is most certainly not.

I find the raving hate more yawn-worthy personally.
The video is pretty uninspired (although they threw in some nice eye candy), as is the main trailer. It would be nice if they focused on some characterization or otherwise tie it with Trek a bit more, probably not much budgeted for it.
That's not surprising to me though, other than GW2 I have not seen any mmo put out a compelling trailer.

I don't know. I figured trekkies were more into exploration of planets and space than just exploding space ships that you can find in any other Sci-Fi game. I dunno.

You are right that a lot of Star Trek is about that sort of thing, but making that into compelling MMO content that isn't just 'here is your 3d chat room.. enjoy!' without a massive warchest would be tough.

I had to reread the blurb with the video to make sure i hadn't misread the word exploration. This video consisted of combat on the ground, combat in space, people running around on the ground with weapons and some lovley views. The only thing that could be construed as being exploration was the scanning of the debri field, but im pretty sure that is a mission.
To be fair, they are allowed to name their videos to whatever they want, but if the game had some actual exploration im pretty sure they would have shown it instead of that. Which can only mean that either there is none or whatever they do have is not fit for consumption yet and with the launch closing in it seems unlikley that it will be part of it. Here's hoping for the future.
