About as ham-fisted as everything else involved in Avatar's story.

call me ignorant,

But i thought she was lighting up cos she was gagging for a fag after a whole day of not smoking, and as most smokers will agree after doing something which prevents you from having a fag (e.g a 3-4hr exam) the first thing u want to do is smoke.

Anyhow these critics should shut their trapholes, if a guy wants his actors to smoke they should be allowed to, artistic license and all that.

p.s. Avatar was great

"here's no doubt plenty more MMO metaphor to be found within Avatar "

Yup:

I agree with Cameron's comments. I enjoy online games and games in general, but I refuse to be one of those stereotypical fat, lazy gamers. I work out at least 5 days a week. Some people do care more about their game Avatars than their real life bodies.

Then staying in you Avatar body is just fine. *scoffs*

Smoking as a metaphore for video game "addicition"... there's an easy target to blurt out when you're caught with your pants down. Let's all join hands and moralize about all those overweight bleary-eyed, geek obsessives living in their mother's basement banging on their cheeto-encrusted keyboards playing MMO's.

Ignoring the fact that this is a "stereotypical" image and not a typical one, as those who have actually done any real research on gamers have found out. I'd say that gamers are probably a big part of this movie's audience. Given that, and the fact that the movie's imagery seems to be so heavily influenced by MMO's, it's interesting to see what 'ol James really thinks of us and our games.

MMOs haven't heavily influenced shit. Fantasy/Sci-fi imagery like the kind seen in Avatar have been around since humans had the ability to imagine.

The ending still makes sense and I don't think it was hypocritical. His human body sucked anyway because he was restricted to a wheel chair. His Avatar form had good legs and able to communicate with people better because he didn't look like he needed help all the time or weak.

Just like people who might have disabilities in real life, online avatars help take those disibilities away and look like a normal human being ;)

So nyah, it's not just about getting alien bootay :P

Yeah, James Cameron was trying to tell us that living in a fantasy world is a bad thing. That's why the main character, who we are FORCED into liking, dumps his old body and inhabits his Avatar.

Yep, nice moral backpedal James.

Yep yep and yep....but then again the entire movie was a huge mess of hypocracy.

"Technology is baaaaaddd!" the movie screams at us...and yet the Na'vi are entirety CGI....yea. >_>

It's epic face palm worthy.

Oh, and I love how he's like, "look at the Na'vi! Aren't they beautiful in their simplistic, naturalistic ways?" Yeah, JC, it's pretty easy to commune with nature when you have a tentacle that speaks to trees.

The message of the movie was basically the director's cut of The Abyss

Politically it seems odd for him to take a swipe at gamers. You'd think Jimmy would have realized by now who makes up his audience.

I'm pretty sure after he's topped a billion dollars, his audience might be a bit wider than gamers.
