I can't wait for FarmVille and Zynga to sweep the reader awards next year.

Then again, after this exploiting/rigging debacle Massively would be crazy to ever have reader voting again.

Well Zynga already made more than any MMO that came out this year.

I recently installed Runes of Magic while Allods was shut down between Beta stages and I was pleasantly surprised.

For a F2P game Runes of Magic is very good.

But I was also surprised by the in-game world announcements asking players to go vote in Massively's polls.

The biggest disappointment, however, were the ALLCAPS, ranting posts in the comments on Massively's poll by the Runes of Magic players. Nothing worse than finding out a game you like is populated by morons.

Yeah the only thing I don't agree with the staff is the most anticipated game of 2010, it's TOR :) I don't know anyone that is looking forwards to APB but I can count 5 who are looking forwards to TOR...

As for the reader's choice, make that who plays the most of what game.

I'm beginning to think we should've had a "Most Anticipated Game For 2010 that isn't actually coming out in 2010" category.

Wow, no surprise there... for the biggest disappointment category at least, I personally voted for Alganon, but apparently its so fail it lost that category because no professionals are allowed! *badum tsh*

Something can't be a disappointment if no one had any expectations for it in the first place.

Looking over these choices make me realize what a sad, sad year 2009 was on the MMO front. :(

If you hop on over to the RoM main page right now (http://www.runesofmagic.com/en/freetoplay/index.html), you'll see the following feature on the bottom right:

"New titel system" (sic)

I always wanted to display a titel in RoM.

@ Pingles:
Not only is it populated by morons, it's run by morons.

That's pretty poor, but do bear in mind that it is a Taiwanese game translated into English.. by Germans.

Thanks Massively for setting the record straight on this.

I agree with pretty much all of the staff assessments, except for visuals/graphics - assuming a decent rig there is no way that this award cannot go to Age of Conan which is simply stunning. I've played Champions Online and it simply doesn't begin to compare in my view. Assuming a low-end rig then LoTRO would trump Champions Online in this category (as would DDO and WAR in my opinion). The idea that Runes of Magic could qualify for the award is (like most of their first placings) a total joke.

@ Seffrid:
"..there is no way that this award cannot go to Age of Conan which is simply stunning."

Actually, there is a way; AoC wasn't released in 2009.

To quote Massively's bolded text in their original article:
"The poll choices consist of some aspect of games or expansions that launched this year, so don't expect to see older games on these lists."

My apologies, I'd forgotten the bit about a 2009 launch when it came to the entry for graphics/visuals, still don't believe it should have gone to CO, however. LoTRO would be a clear winner in my book with the Siege of Mirkwood expansion having launched in 2009.

Wow, I think you have some nerve calling this a "Readers Choice" Award after this. It would seem to me that the readers spoke up and made their choice, and now you are slapping them down for it. If you host a "popularity contest" (which is what any system of voting is), you just sound like an idiot when you complain about the results. I didn't even vote in this, but I am feeling betrayed by the staff of Massively for publishing the results in this opinionated manner. Sure, Frogster may have skewed the results a bit with their tactics, but their players (ie, your READERS) chose to come here and vote. Now you are telling all of those people that their opinion does not matter! Readers Choice my a**!!

Its the fact that Frogster skewed the results which made everyone else's opinions worthless.

Honestly arathaine, it's my opinion as well as the opinion of many others on the staff to support the fact that Runes of Magic rallied their fan-base to choose their game for every single category. We support the choice of the readers and would never wish to discredit what they selected. This is the winner for a reason -- their fans spoke up the loudest.

However, many of our other readers (as you can see from the comments) are not as understanding as perhaps you and I are. Many have already discredited us for hosting a "popularity contest" and not a true "Reader's Choice Award" because of a faulty voting system that you can apparently manipulate with a little computer know-how.

Therefore, while everyone was on the same even ground (IE, any fan could have voted for their favorite game multiple times) many feel that the voting is still flawed and came down to running a script to vote for your favorite game. So, to err on the side of caution, we talked about the errors in our voting method and we will try to get those fixed up so we can host a future award poll.

However, do I believe the results would drastically change? No, not really. RoM still rallied their fans and would probably still win.

So no, your opinion certainly does matter and we posted these results even with the errors that may have occurred in the voting process. We also acknowledge that there were some problems. In short, we're acknowledging the opinions of all of our readers -- those who agree and those who don't.
