Well, the fans and readers of industry site Gamasutra have voted for their game of the decade, and their choice is simultaneously surprising and yet unsurprising. In a list that's full of single player games, the MMO that redefined MMOs has hit the top of the list: World of Warcraft.
Why was it chosen for the very, very hefty spot of game of the decade? Well, the readers have spoken on the final article, and it seems the list is almost as massive as the game. Everything from massive game design, to how it single-handedly changed how MMOs were played in the last 5 years, to how the game itself impacts a player's life. For those reasons and more, it's been voted in as the game of the decade.
For the full list of quotes from Gamasutra readers, and for the list of the top 12 games of the decade, check out Gamasutra.

a lot of people QQ about the influence of WoW on other games...but when people point out that games like Star Wars TOR is just another WoW clone, they jump up and down and cry that WoW stole from Knights of the Old Republic.
If WoW was the game of the decade, UO was the game of the 90s.

Actually i'm afraid it does. So many people who play World of Warcraft do nothing but whine and moan about it. Whilst repeating the same daily for the seventieth day in the row or levelling their ninth alt through the exact same content, I can sympathise. A huge proportion of the community floods to a new mmo as soon as it comes out in desperation for something different, then comes flooding back when it's not the Holy Grail they seek.
World of Warcraft is an excellent game, but it is most certainly not the 'best' mmo out there. Cataclysm certainly looks interesting though and I commend them for doing something different after five years.

WOW was great at the begining, before TBC.
Hugs and happy 2010 from Spain.

World of Warcraft deserves their accolades. There are those who will never see the truth of what Blizzard has done, some people will always live with nostalgia and hate WoW because it caused many people to leave EQ, EQ2, and UO. Others like being the perpetual underdog, and hate anything that is popular with the masses.
Blizzard has always put quality at the top of their list of everything they do in WoW. There have been more significant changes in WoW over the course of 5 years than any other MMO, in the same time frame. Only two expansions yet a WoW expansion is gigantic compared to the average MMO expansion. Every patch adds more content.
There are other fine MMO's out there. WoW though lets a very broad spectrum of people play and enjoy the same game. That is the genius of Blizzard. They took a genre of game that was exclusive to players and made it inclusive to them. Every single day and year since its launch WoW has become even more inclusive to players. Whether you have time to play for hours on end or just a hour or two a night.

There are way too many games superior to WoW that have come out in the last decade.
But meh, it's an MMO with millions of players, so of course it's going to be picked since so many lives are tangled in with the game.
WoW is the Wii of MMORPGs. Blizzard is the Nintendo of MMORPG companies.

It's great for more casual players and a wider audience, but is cutting out the hardcore and middle players.

I'm going to agree with Eric Hardman in the original article:
WoW is the undisputed game changer of the decade. It might not be the best game, it might not be your personal favorite, but it is the one that set the bar and the one that will be remembered.

Do you know where Vivendi is located? You do know that they owned Blizzard, right?
They were a French water utility. They bought Blizzard, and with it, WoW. Apparently the people voting on comments are completely unaware of this.

I've tried some other games before but it seems no game for now can overpass WOW. As the statistics show from their last patch release over 11M playing wow over the world. So no there's no argue why WOW being the 'Game of the Decade'.
