When all is said and done, how many hours will it take to complete my Sith Inquisitor's storyline? Are we talking 20, 40 or maybe 60 hours until completion? Even 60 hours seems unlikely. I'm willing to bet that BioWare is shooting for about 100 hours of playtime before people hit maximum level. That'd put the 8-10 hour a day people at about two weeks of solid playing before "finishing" a character. For the average player that sinks somewhere around two or four hours a day, that'd be something like three months before endgame.
That's 100 hours of multiple choices, objectives and sprinkles of exposition for eight separate classes. Assuming BioWare actually pulls off creating all that content, how the hell are they going to keep it fresh and interesting along the way? I often imagine batteries of desks and people all humming away at quest content that could only be described as legion. Do these developers sometimes wonder what the outdoors looks like? Do their fingertips ache from the constant clacking of keyboard strokes? There's likely some evil incantation involved in getting all these downtrodden writers, programmers and designers to created eight separate stories and remain interesting for around 100 hours of play.
Do we even want to wonder if SWTOR will ever have new classes? Something tells me that the work behind adding two more classes would suck up most all resources available for expansion development. Then again, we're probably dealing with a whole different beast when discussing expansions for a game like this. Assuming it's as successful as all parties involved would like it to become, a full-on expansion pack would probably dwarf any counterpart past or present in terms of development scale. This is especially true if BioWare goes for the addition of space flight and combat, which is exactly the kind of thing I know many Star Wars fans would like to see.
Truthfully, I look forward to seeing BioWare's attempt at this behemoth goal. As a fan, I've got every reason to want them to succeed. On the other hand, I've also had enough experience with this genre of game to know just how much could go wrong. While it's too early to actually call it, much of what I've seen and heard about the title has given me a positive feeling. There's a certain vibe I usually feel about an impending MMO, and it's not often I find myself expecting a rolling success this soon before launch. I haven't really felt like this about an MMO since pre-launch World of Warcraft days, come to think of it.
Whether or not people will come to speak of SWTOR in the same breath as WoW remains to be seen. If they can pull of everything I've been rambling about here, then I think there's a very strong chance it will happen. If not, well, I guess we'll have to see how everything else turns out. I guess that's the reality of being a fan of these games; it's something of a crap shoot as to whether or not you'll ever come across one that'll keep you playing for more than a few weeks.

My "guess" is that TOR will launch without a space aspect to the gameplay.
SWG did the same thing, and released space later. I hope I'm wrong.
I think space is a major aspect of the Star Wars universe, and if TOR doesn't have it at launch, that could be a big deal to many.

True that my friend. Hopefully we will see some space content eventually. That's one of the things that I miss about SWG. Love to fly around in my ship when I was bored. Space combat is essential in a Star Wars game. If it wasn't, it would be called "Wars". Lets not forget most of the original Star Wars game back in the day were space simulation, with the X-Wing and TIE series of video games. This game still has potential for a lot more. Maybe it will be a surprise at launch, or maybe for later.

Speaking of TIE Fighter, did you know the TIE Defender is now available in LEGO?
Yeah, space combat would be nice. Just keep those EVE designers away from it, please.

"Who knows, maybe there'll be more bugs than an average MMO launch. Perhaps the game will be intoxicatingly delightful to play, except when it freezes or crashes. People would put up with that, right? Well, no they wouldn't, actually. A minor amount of that and usually everything can be managed, but if a game has these kinds of issues the "word of mouth" buzz can be significantly diminished."
If the game itself is good enough, I wouldn't be so sure about that. The general server instability didn't stop WoW's player base from growing out of all proportion (well, once Blizzard got enough new servers opened up to put an end to that six-month period where they weren't shipping new boxed copies, anyway).

I think that this massive of an undertaking as far as development and content goes could only be handled successfully by the behemoth that is EA-Bioware. They have the resources, experience, and people necessary to make this possible. When also considering Bioware's recent merger with Mythic, which has a fairly strong background in launching MMO's, thing do look up. Regardless, the content that would need to be generated by the time frame you gave, which is fair is not possibly a bit over the mark, would take some impressive orchestration as well as a good deal of time. The thing that is important to remember is that this game has been in development for more than a few years now, and has only in the last 9 months or so really revealed any of the content.
I think if any part of the game will be lacking it will probably be strong pvp elements. There probably will be battlegrounds, but no real immersive or fun world pvp. Which will probably come later. There can only be so much stuff in a launch after all.

If I understand correctly, Bioware did a very smart thing in buying the MMO engine rather than building it. This would easily allow them to leap frog many of the pitfalls that other MMOs have run into and skip right into content. Granted the Hero's Journey engine may be questionable but I doubt Bioware would have invested the money if it wasn't of some quality. Aside from that these guys are masters of story telling. Starting with Mass Effect and continuing into Dragon Age which I feel is probably Bioware's Torchlight project. It should allow them to see what their story telling engine can do and what needs to be refined. I would assume Mass Effect 2 will follow march that design further down the road. Before Guild Wars (and sadly to some large extent since), story telling in MMOs was non-existent. Guild Wars has shown what can be done and Bioware is hopefully going to push the envelope and I believe will skip past the technological hurdles right into content delivery.

Am I missing something? Was there a release date given for this game? What's the point of speculating on what is or isn't going to be in this game or if they have enough time to put all the experiences in when you have no frame of reference for release.

The current rumor is for late last year, although it's simply a rumor.

It's just amazing to me that they decided to focus on voice acting and story as the big innovations for their mmo. Really? When I think I of ways to improve mmos, voice overs and story are way down on the list. I don't hear many people saying, "If only the WoW quests were fully voiced I'd reinstall and give the game another shot." No one cares. Same goes for story. I'm not logging back into old mmos because of lore updates.
The other thing that scares me about this game is the quote I read from one of the developers stating it's going to be heavily instanced. Apparently instances allow them to better tell the story and personalize it for players. Sigh.

Well, I guess because you don't care about story then no one else does either. Is there anything else you think needs to be included or excluded? I need to hear what you personally have to say on the matter so that I can then automatically agree.
Story is very important to a game like this. It has to be in there. Damn, I guess Bioware is in trouble now since we've both voiced our authoritative and final opinions on the subject. Whatever shall they do?

Depends on how they do instances.
If they go the CO way, no way.
But instanced missions/quests aren't so bad. Sure it limits player interaction but it eliminates alot of the annoying issues with persistent world mission/questing. If done right, it won't hurt anything.

If I remember correctly, it was stated that each class is estimated to be over 200+ hours of gameplay
Posted: Dec 29th 2009 4:40PM Aganazer said
That sounds more likely. Its also interesting what effect all the voice acting may have. That 200 hours could probably be done in less than 100 if you were to read the dialog instead of sitting there listening to it. Long dialog will be the new grind as a time sink.

100 hours to 'complete' the story would be really really bad. Most Bioware games are about 2/3 dialog anyway so you'd be looking at around 33 hours of actual gameplay. Consider that most MMOG's up until now have no voice acting and people are playing 200 hours to reach max level.
Posted: Dec 29th 2009 5:05PM (Unverified) said
Yeah, who wants 100 hours of this disgusting 'dialog' and 'story' to get in the way of the REAL MMO gameplay, clicking TAB, 1, 2, 3 for 16 hours a day.

Everybody I've discussed this game with personally has the same concern: if all missions have to be fully voiced with fully animated interactive mission briefings, how long will it take them to add content to the game? Once you've finished your 200 hours of leveling to max out your Smuggler or your Inquisitor or whatever, what will there be left to do? And, more to the point, how long will you have to wait before there is anything new to do?

I think that there's a vocal minority of people that just want to just grind/PvP inMMO's and that's fine. However, I believe that the real drivers for an MMO are good gameplay and a story that immerses the player in the gameworld. The gameworld also has to be built like WoW or EVE ... I wouldn't accept instancing like AoC and COX used. To me, games are like books in that you get to the end of a chapter and can't put the book down because the story is so good and you want to see what comes next.
I'm not really interested in PvP or that virtual achievement feeling. I'll play MW2 or Halo3 for competition.

If you do all the side quests in Mass Effect and the two DLC's the game can go as much as 50 hours. Dragon Age might be a little longer.
BioWare has said each class will have several hundred hours of main storyline content. Then after that you hit max level and do what you do, raid maybe? and PvP.
I loved Mass Effect, and I highly doubt people that "hate dialog" played games like Mass Effect.
SWTOR will be a hit. But making content patches and expansions with VO is a insane project. They set the bar high on this one.

If Bioware, EA, and Lucas Arts were smart. They would wait till in the summer of 2011. That would put them in the great area of post Cataclysm doldrums, and give them plenty of time to do the game properly. Giving it that level of polish that Bioware is known for.
