And the reason you shouldn't?

Cause WoW is better in almost every way.

I don't trust SOE and I will never play a game of theirs again. They have failed me too many times in the past.

Just checked the UK store and "Rise of Kunark starter pack" is £1.99 (thats around $3.20), no excuse at all not to try it. I was wondering if there is any point of buying The Shadow Odyssey now or would it be better just to wait and buy it if needed...

It looks like if you buy "The Shadow Odyssey" and have never played before it gives you 30 days free play as a new subscriber...

Yes $5 is a good deal, BUT not in this case.

#1 When you die you loose XP.
#2 You have to run naked where you can be killed again and loose more XP to loot your body. All your items stay on your body.
#3 You can not help anyone out unless they are in your group. You can not heal / rez or anything unless you are grouped up with that person.

Cute huh..... NO THX SOE...

#1 you don't lose xp, you get xp debt, it is not the same

#2 put down the crack pipe or stop thinking of EQ1 - the story is about EQ2 and your statement is outright wrong

#3 the game doesn't play in a way where this is a problem. so not sure of the point of that? no you can't randomly hp buff people , but if they are soloing its not needed on solo content, and if they are in a group, they have the buffs the would need...

EQ2 is a solid game, with great options for all playstyles

I still like SOE and think they are one of the better companies out there. EQ and EQII have always and will always be in a league of their own. These games are not as player friendly as WoW but ofter real excitement, frustration and accomplishment. Things WoW has lacked since Vanilla.

Also if your a new account don't bother with the starter pack as The Shadow Odyssey states the following "This all-in-one compilation pack includes the new expansion pack, plus the entire award winning content from four previously released expansion packs and three adventure packs....30-day subscription included for new accounts only (existing EverQuest II and Station Access accounts are not eligible to receive gameplay included with purchase). Afterwards, a Monthly Subscription Fee of $14.99 applies (plus applicable tax)."

Which sounds like you can get the game, all the expansions to date and the adventure packs for 5 bucks if you don't currently have an account. I'm going to give it a go since I haven't played since launch.

EQ2 is awesome fun, started the trial loved it bought it at steam (shadow odessey added it to my trial account and got 30 free days)

EQ2 is a great game, it have everything WoW has PLUS the little things that matters like housing, good graphics and stuff.

This game is perfect for that 30 day free subscription when you buy it. Beyond that certain aspects of the game got on my nerves (constant zoning and lack of groups) but get yourself a good guild (which i didnt until the very end and at which point the Cataclysm trailer had hooked me right back in to WoW)

tl:dr Try it and you may be pleasently surprised!

Wow just wow on the misinformed.

#1 When you die you loose XP.

Not since launch has this been true. No loss, no debt, not even any res sickness worth spitting on.

#2 You have to run naked where you can be killed again and loose more XP to loot your body. All your items stay on your body.

Never been true. You respawn at the location of your choice, fully geared with minor gear durability hit. Full stats on gear until its 0%, then you pay a mender, NPC, next to nothing to repair. Or you use a kit or call a raid usable bot.

#3 You can not help anyone out unless they are in your group. You can not heal / rez or anything unless you are grouped up with that person.

Was true at launch. Today you can pretty much PL someone out of group if you want. About the only thing you still can't do is KS them.

Five years in and with the last free content update, 54th, for those keeping track its finally polished and ready for the masses. Come Feb the new graphics engine goes live, good races get another starter zone/city and oh yeah another expansion for the end game =)

The title of your article is misleading. First, you can get the vanilla Eq2 for free via the free trial. But the way your title read it me is that they had lowered the monthly fee to 5 dollars. Eq2 is not a 5 dollar game - it costs as much per month, $15.99 as WoW..Eq2 is a great game if you like PVE only and play on one overcrowded (AB) server thats full of RP police drama elists.. otherwise its a ghost town with a very clunky demanding engine.

Is this a paid advertisement cleverly disguised as an article ?

I liked EQ2, but just got bored with it. Didn't care for the last expansion, feel it was poorly conceived (repeatedly running same instances, nah don't care for that). Be curious to see what they do with future updates, and expansions, maybe return at some point.

Everquest 2 is a very good game. It's very pretty and on par with even some of the more recent MMO's.

I was testing out the game for some friends and came up with a list of great features in EQ2:

Tons of dungeons and raids
Mentoring system (everyone in your party can be artificially the same level)
Elaborate crafting
Group crafting dailies
Guild leveling system
Guild recruitment system
Housing and guild halls
Collections
Lots of mounts
In-game CCG (collectible card game, like Magic: The Gathering or Eye of Judgment)
Has bards
Bind hearth to anywhere
Party combo system (!!!)

I could get my boys to do a trial (I still can't figure out why) but I thought the list might interest some of you.
