It's all good unless they are targeting Windower, in that case I could see a lot of unhappy people. Windower obviously windows FFXI which was needed for years until SE decided to finall give PC users their own window. But Windower also has plugins that enable functions not intended by SE... The problem though is Windower has been in use for a long time and actually makes the graphics of the game look even better.

Heh looked it up, I guess it's not windower at all or windowing programs, but a botting program I'd never heard of. Except it was shut down a while ago already.... :/ SE is slow with their news.

This is nice, but it seems like too little too late.

Botting has been required (literally) by the top LS's for years now.

The endgame community has devolved into a cesspool of ethugs. The worst of any MMO I know of by a wide margin.

RMTing? Good for you! Stealing accounts? Those nubs had it coming! Fish botting? So is everyone else (that matters). Claim botting? You better be, and you better be doing it well or you're /gkicked, and you better pos hack to get to camp quickly.

This is not an exaggeration. This is what FFXI's endgamers have become due to FFXI's poorly designed notorious monster (named/rare boss mobs) system and the bewildering stubbornness and refusal by SE to police the situation or make ANY changes to the system.

If they ban every ffxiapp and similar bot/hack program user, there will be a LOT of very happy players, happy to have a friendlier, more pleasant game environment, and happy for there to finally be justice/karma.

There are, however, a few snags.
First Windower, a 3rd party app a HUGE amount of non-Japanese players use. Originally it was used just to allow alt-tabbing (alt tab without windower in FFXI used to log you out of the game automatically since it was considered an unfair advantage over console users to be able to minimize FFXI and browse community sites (meanwhile console users had their laptops loaded with community sites sitting right next to them at all times)), now it has a lot of shady bells and whistles. No bots, but some arguable hacks, and some definite advantages over non-windower users.
Banning all Windower users would take a massive chunk out of the NA/EU playerbase. JP players would rejoice (since they demonize all 3rd party app use (as they should) and also demonize all not-being-Japanese (I can't help it! I was born this way!).
So the question is, where do you draw the line. It would be unwise to ban EVERY 3rd party app user, but the community absolutely needs to be purged of the bad apples.

Another question is, how much of this can they really detect? That's always been a topic of fierce debate in the ffxi ethug community. Oh look, here's one now at the ffxi asshole rallying site http://www.bluegartrls.com/forum/showthread.php?t=86250
There, you can experience the "stop being a f***ing pussy and just f***cking cheat, you f***ing f****t" attitude that plagues FFXI.

No. Not even close. I'm guessing you got to level 30 and quit, because the endgame was nothing like FFXI. There weren't very many hacks for EverQuest during its prime, and especially not ones that guilds had to rely on to get an advantage.

Heh. I find this funny, since I, along with many of my friends, played on Bahamut, which is the same server that BG (Blue Garter) is on. We were in an endgame linkshell (which shall remain nameless to protect the innocent). We killed Vrtra, and King Behemoth, and Jormungand, along with all the other major mobs. Except for the one everyone really wants.

Nidhogg.

Time after time, we'd wander into Dragon's Aery, and wait it out. Fourth window... Fifth window... Inevitably, when he popped, 90% of the time BG would have him. Always the instant-claim. Rarely do I remember ever seeing the beast pop yellow (unclaimed). Of course, they always insisted their shit didn't stink, and that it was all legit (read:we're spamming Dia/Provoke better than you broski). We all knew better, we just couldn't prove it.

On a side note, the Blue Garter you see and read about today is a mere shadow of its former self, when Edwardtheblack and Berticus ran the linkshell. Today's group probably couldn't get into Blue Garter back when they were formidable. No, I'm not bitter. I never once tried to get into BG.

And for the record, damn straight I botted (at the very end of my FFXI playing days, four years ago). To beat the cheaters you have to cheat. If you don't like that, you're playing the wrong game. Which is why I left.

Let us hope SE fixes what's wrong with FFXI in FF14.

And I'm guessing you're a presumptive asshole.

Just because you didn't know about them doesn't mean they didn't exist.

@Philip

Although I do /spit on you for being yet another weak minded pleb who fell into cheating because "you have to!" or "everyone else is doing it!", at least you're honest about it and recognize it does not make for a good game environment.

The reason I'm so unnecessarily bitter about cheaters in FFXI is for the exact reason you said: Dragon's Aery back before LS's admitted they botted.

3 hours a day, day after day after day just standing around that tiny zone waiting for Fafhogg to be claim botted by the asshole LS of Alexander server. Day after day the GMs (supposedly) watched invisibly and said they didn't see anything against TOS and couldn't take action.

Whereas back then botting was a shameful secret among a few LS's/random jerks, these days it's a source of pride. The bot program being targeted in this thing is NASA, which the developer sold for $2000 to only 1 LS per server. The subsequent drama and damage NASA did to the LS's that bought them was almost payback enough. Plus the people that bought NASA ultimately got a reputation for being completely retarded for spending so much money to be able to outclaim a few outdated mobs.

And they are outdated. The best loot in the game no longer comes from timed spawn NMs. HNMLS's themselves are outdated, and "legit" LSs are popping up more and more. There's sooo much endgame content these days that does not benefit from cheating.
