This is all true, a trial isn't meant to let people play the entire game for free. However, I for one think that extending the trial a bit to include one of the crisis zones or whatever they're called would let the testers try the game out more than just letting them run the short tutorial over and over again.

The only stink of desperation here is coming off your constant comments on a game you haven't played in months.

Your cries for attention here just amuse the rest of us. You're really bound and determined to live out the "Basement-Dwelling Forum Nerd" stereotype to the fullest, aren't you?

My question is this: can the free players buy stuff?

I know a lot of people who wish that COH's character creator was offline and didn't require a sub. With this? Well, its not offline, but it is free. Some people just want the character creator! So this is perfect for them.

But if you can buy the costume items? Cryptic has 4,320 worth of Cryptic Point buyable merchandise (~$54 worth) for sale in their store. That's costume sets and extra costume slots (all they need to do is toss in a costume tailor in there).

I think its pretty darn shrewd.

There's enough free stuff that someone should be able to get away without buying the few item they have in the store.

This is true, but there are some nice things in the store, and I'm sure there's more to come. Plus, its per account, not per character like many free with micro games out there.

If free players can buy stuff, I don't think Cryptic/Atari expect to get $54 out of every person who does this. But at the same time, I don't think its unreasonable for them to have some sort of revenue expectations here.

"We hope that the demo will convert x% of people into buyers, and y% of those into subscribers. On top of that, of those who do not become buyers or subscribers, we think we can realistically hope that z% of them buy at least $a worth of in-game goods."

Well I am glad they allowed us the free trial. I installed it yesterday and played for several hours. Though the trial is limited, I saw enough to make a decision about buying the game. The game was just not for me. At least they gave me the opportunity to try it with out spending any money, of that I am happy.
