I agree with Seldom. I think this genre needs a serious overhaul in the essential concepts that we take for granted or it will eventually die.

I think one of the worst things about picking up a new game, especially after a long stint with an old one, is the realization that we're in for a long grind. Even if it's subconscious, knowing what waits for us, even in a game that shows promise, can send us right back to the game we were originally bored with. This happens ALL THE TIME with WoW players.

The answer to this is simple, yet complicated. Reduce the grind. Duh. But how?

Based on Realtime's discussion, APB has what appears to be the best answer to the grind. At least for me. Levelless character progression, something akin to a first person perk system, will allow new players to start playing immediately with seasoned vets to experience all that San Paro will have to offer. Still, EvE is an elegant answer to the grind question. Though there's no cap, an issue that keeps me from playing, the grind is woven so tightly into what you do that if you think the game is fun the grind is just an extension of what you do in the game.

There are other issues with the genre, but for the sake of brevity and to keep on topic I'll stick with this one.
